Title: Stupid
(y/n)'s POV
I knew I was incredibly stupid. I knew that never checking the weather app before school wasn't smart. I knew not bringing anything more than my usual denim jacket for protection wasn't smart. I knew wearing short sleeved shirt and shorts in mid October wasn't smart. I knew not going back into my house and grabbing an umbrella when I saw it was raining wasn't smart.
Yet here I was, soaking my jacket while I waited for the bus to pick me up and drag me into another miserable day of school. It was raining heavily now, and all of the stupid decisions I listed? Yeah, I made every single one of those mistakes in one morning.
I was apparently too busy wallowing in self pity to notice someone standing next to me until they talked.
"Are you... okay?" The person asked. I turned to face her, to be met with the concerned face of the most beautiful girl I'd ever met. Why had I never noticed her before? My gay heart was stunned, but I soon realized she was waiting for me to answer her question.
"Oh, yeah! I'm totally fine, it's all good. I just was too dumb to grab an umbrella this morning." I blurted awkwardly. I was a very awkward person, especially when presented with very cute girls.
Suddenly she stepped closer and held her umbrella over my head too, making my heartbeat speed up a little bit. I glanced up at it and tucked my jacket under my arm, wincing at how cold and wet it was.
"I expected to have to share with my brother anyway, but he ditched to drive his new car." She explained, looking like she felt a portion of the awkwardness I did.
"Oh, cool. Who's your brother?" I asked, shifting my feet uncomfortably but scorching a bit closer to her.
"Connor Murphy, the tall emo kid," she grimaced as she said that, making me regret the question. I was so stupid.
"Oh, so you're Zoe Murphy? I've heard of you! People say you're the best musician in jazz band!" I lit up at the realization. She was said to be really good, some people even said she could have gone pro if she wanted.
I saw her face light up and a goofy grin slide onto her pretty features. Did I mention that she was really pretty? Because just in case you missed it, this girl was absolutely gorgeous.
"I've never heard that one. You seem nice, who are you?" She asked with some look on her face I didn't fully understand, some dazzling curiosity just behind the eye.
"The names (y/n) (l/n), I mainly do debate and theatre type stuff," I shrugged nonchalantly, but deep inside I kind of wanted to run around squealing like a little 11 year old with a schoolgirl's crush.
"Oh, yeah! I saw the spring musical last year, I thought I recognized you." She explained with a sweet smile. I lit up at the thought of her having watched that.
But sadly, the biggest cockblock on earth rumbled up to the bus stop. The school bus, packed with kids who wished they had rides to school without this miserable thing. She made an "after you gesture", prompting me to climb the dumb old stairs of this dumb old vehicle. I chose a seat near the front and took my backpack off, putting it on my lap.
I was thoroughly surprised when a second later, Zoe didn't pass me to sit alone or with some friend, but plopped right down next to me. She grinned and I returned it with no hesitation. I was just really happy I didn't have to brave the ride alone, and that she didn't have enough of me already. I could tell by her face that she was genuinely interested in talking to me and not just being polite, which sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach. I would have to be incredibly stupid to pass this opportunity up.
"Miss me?" I teased, bumping my shoulder against hers. She leaned into the touch so I scooted a tiny bit closer so we were pressed together. She didn't mind, even brushing her hand on my knee.
"I missed you soooo much, I could have died!" She whined jokingly. I scoffed, rolling my eyes. It was weird I never noticed her, since she clearly went to my bus stop in the morning and was reasonably popular.
"Yeah I can tell." I said drily.
"When is the fall play?" She asked, changing the subject. I couldn't tell if the pink tint on her cheeks was from the cold outside or something else, but the way her eyes glowed with mirth suggested it had nothing to do with the weather.
"It's November 14th, usual place and time," I answered with a grin.
"I don't remember the usual time, could you text it to me?" She asked. I nodded before realizing an important flaw to that plan.
"I would, but I don't have your number?" I tilted my head. Oh my god, did I just ask for Zoe Murphy's number? Was I actually smooth? For once this wasn't a stupid decision. Good job, me. You get a metaphorical pat on the back.
"Oh yeah! Here, give me your phone. We can put contacts in." She said, digging her phone from her backpack. I didn't know why exactly she kept her phone in her backpack, but it was harmless so I didn't question it further.
I accepted the phone she held out to me and dug mine out of the pocket in my black jean shorts, entered the passcode, and held it out to her.
The phone was already open, so I just found the contacts and added myself, including taking a dumb selfie and putting it as the contact picture.
I quickly handed it back, seeing her posing with a piece sign as her contact photo in my phone. She then handed mine back with a huge smile.
"I'd love to watch you in the show, it would be fun. I could bring some friends, and afterward we could go out to eat? Maybe by ourselves?" She offered, biting her lip. I was hit with a sudden jolt of surprise.
"Zoe Murphy, we haven't even known each other for an hour and you're asking me out?" I scolded lightly. I saw her face fall a bit, so I added. "But I would love to go out with you,"
She grinned, finding the courage to grab my hand gently, and all I could process was that her hands were really soft and small. I grinned, feeling joy and butterflies erupt in my stomach, and fireworks burst throughout my veins. I knew we didn't even know each other that well, but I also knew that what I felt was real, and that we'd be good girlfriends.
*Time skip brought to you by Anne Boleyn in Heelys*
It was opening night of Our Town, the fall play. I was about to go out to the stagedoor, expecting Zoe to prance on up, maybe kiss my cheek and tell me where we're going so I can go after I was finished here.
Instead I was met by Zoe pulling me into a hug before pulling away and looking at me, eyes dancing with pride. I still felt the electricity when she touched me, but it was a beautiful electricity I loved.
Her hands traveled to my waist and she pulled me into a kiss, which I quickly reciprocated. I heard my cast mates cheering, but I didn't fully internalize it. All I could sense was Zoe, how her lips were soft and tasted faintly of bubblegum. How she pressed herself against me, and I could feel the faint rise and fall of her chest. How I could feel her breathing through her nose, the air fanning my face lightly.
She pulled away as suddenly as she'd kissed me, forcing my eyes to flutter open. The sight in front of me didn't make me regret it one bit.
She was delightfully disheveled, with her soft t-shirt a bit ruffled and her flannel falling off one shoulder. With her slightly swollen lips and bashful blush on her cheeks, she was a sight to behold.
"Nerd," I whispered before pulling her in for a kiss again and losing myself in the sensation that made the world feel bright. I would have to be ridiculously stupid to not take this glaring opportunity.

A/N: It's a short one today but I think it turned out nice so I'm not gonna try to pad it any more.
