Burr should've known that something was off with his roommate.

Hamilton sat in the corner, breathing faster than any normal human should. Of course, he also wrote faster than any normal human should, but it wasn't really the time.

Aaron crossed the room to Alex, gently placing his hands on Alex's shoulders. "Hey," he said softly. He'd seen this in a movie once. "Hey. You okay?"

No answer.

Aaron hesitated before pulling Alex's hands away from tearing out his hair. "Hey, um. Alex. You there?"

Alex shook his head, and Aaron let out a disgruntled puff of air. Okay, he generally knew how to handle people with this sort of thing.

"Alex. Can I get you to count to eight, buddy? Breathe in for eight."

Alex let in this horrible shuddering breath, and Aaron nodded.

"Hold it for six."

Alex held his breath, and Aaron did the same, trying to demonstrate.

"Okay. Let it out for five." Alex followed his lead, and kept doing the exercise. "Okay, hey. You okay?"

Alex let in another breath. "I-I should've died so long ago."

The words felt like a punch to Aaron's gut. "What?"

"I...no one needs me. Like, at all. Why am I here?" Alex gave a nervous laugh. "What if no one cares about me, or-"

"Alex, bud. I care about you." Aaron was surprising himself here. "Okay? I care about you, and I know for a fact that other people do too. You're an amazing person. You're going to do great things."

"You think so?" Alex sniffed. Aaron didn't realize he was crying.

"I know so." Alex smiled at him, and gave him a tight hug.

"Thanks, Aaron."
