Jenna Hunterson- Sofa (c)

Waitress One Shot

Having your pregnant best friend living on your sofa wasn't how you expected your late twenties to go but there wasn't anything to be done about it now. You were happily married with two children whom you loved dearly. Your husband was a lawyer, so although you could very easily get away with being a house wife, with the two kids off at school, you took up some shifts at the local diner where your friend Jenna worked. Both of you had dreams growing up, none of them included being waitresses though but sometimes that is the hand you are dealt.

Her life hadn't gone so smoothly. Jenna wed her first boyfriend Earl and they were never overly happy but now she was pregnant with his baby and that made things worse. He was jealous and controlling and with a baby on the way, Jenna knew she needed an out. She had hoped to save up to leave, but with a lot of insisting from you and your other colleagues, she agreed to live with you. You offered her a fair price, significantly less than Earl took from her, and she was able to save up to find a place for her and her baby.

Although she agreed to live with you, actually getting her there was a trial. After nearly a month of coaxing she had finally said a final goodbye to Earl and turned up on your doorstep two bags in her hands.

You weren't sure what you were expecting. With her arrival, your husband took your children out for ice cream, allowing you and Jenna some time alone. Maybe you expected her to cry, it was an end of a chapter even if it was an unhappy one. Maybe you expected her to be overjoyed at seeing the last of her husband. Neither occurred though. She sat on your sofa by your side, blank expression upon her face and by the looks of it she was numb.

"It's going to be okay Jenna," you smiled softly, hoping that your words were true. "Things are going to work out well."

"I don't know," she whispered. "I don't love him, I haven't for the longest time but it's weird knowing that we will be forever apart."

Wrapping an arm around her, you did your best to comfort her in such a trying time. You had no idea how you would react if you left your husband, but the two situations were completely different, you actually loved your husband and he wasn't a complete dick, unlike Earl.

"It'll be strange at first," you offered. "You just need to keep your chin up. It was the right decision. Maybe it doesn't seem like it now, you've gone from having your own home to living on my sofa but a few months' pay and some good tipping, you will have more than enough for a deposit and all the things you'll need for the baby."

"Thank you for doing this," she whispered. "I truly appreciate it."

"Anything for my best friend."
