Davey Jacobs- Day (c)

Newsies The Musical One Shot

Keeping up walls was the only way you knew to keep yourself safe. People would still hurt you no matter what, but at least you weren't letting anyone do more harm or get close enough to do worse. You had been hurt too many times to let it happen again and although people thought that it turned you sour, you had been given no other choice. You promised yourself you'd never love again that there was no reason to let anyone get close enough to you to find love with them unless you wanted to give them an opportunity to harm you.

It had been something you believed and followed for so long that when you met Davey it was second nature to see him as only a possible painful memory and to not even consider a romance with him. You did become friends quickly though. He was kind and smart and unlike anyone that you had met before and even though you fought with every ounce of your being to keep your walls tall and strong, they begun to crumble. A hard façade was up for the most part, but Davey had started to see you soften and by the time Valentine's Day came around he decided he could finally make a move.

You had agreed to meet as he wanted to talk, so you were waiting patiently when he approached you, holding something out of your view, behind his back. You exchanged pleasantries.

"Do you know what day it is?" He asked, his cheeks slightly rosy from the nerves.

"Tuesday?"

Davey chuckled softly. "No... I mean, it is Tuesday, but I meant more what specific day it is, like what special day it is."

You cocked an eyebrow at him. You knew what day it was, but you notoriously hated it and hoped he knew it as a different day to the one that you knew it as.

"I know you're not a fan of Valentine's Day... I just thought that maybe I could change your mind," he awkwardly smiled, revealing a single red rose from behind his back.

Although you desperately wanted to remain bitter, your heart defied you, forcing a warm smile onto lips as a shaky hand reached out to take the flower.

"I really hate this," you muttered.

Davey's expression dropped. "I'm sorry?"

You let out a sigh, letting the final bit of the wall you had left for him crumble down.

"I really hate how much I love this," you corrected yourself. "You may have changed my mind."
