Newsies One Shot

When you agreed to help Katherine in reporting the Newsboys Strike, you never imagined how much it would change your life. It was hard for a female journalist to actually tell a story that meant anything, usually only being stuck on menial or pointless stories if you were even offered such things. This was a huge door being opened for you and it offered you a world that you never thought it would accept you.

You got to be involved in a movement that would change the lives of so many and it offered you opportunities that you never knew were there. You had met Crutchie, one of the newsboys and a friendship started instantly. He was charming and sweet, and it was hard for you to not fall in love with him. It wasn't the love you thought you would find but it was everything you could ever want, but sadly not everything could be that simple.

After your part in the article, a newspaper in London had offered you fulltime reporter role, and not just to review plays, but to write real, important stories. It was everything you had ever dreamed but now you had to see what was more important to you, your career or your love. You never thought it would eb something that would matter to you, but your love was true, and you didn't want to lose it, but you certainly didn't want to go back to reviewing theatre and writing advice column for housewives.

It took a lot of courage to tell him though.

"I've always wanted to be taken seriously for my work and I can't give up this opportunity because I am not going to get it again. It's last minute but I need to leave for London tomorrow and I really don't want this to end. I've purchased two tickets on a ship that will leave at dawn, I do hope that you would join me, but I understand if you didn't," you whispered, scared for him to say no but not wanting him to agree and regret his decision.

"I don't know," he said softly. "My life is here. All my friends are here and they're basically my family."

You rested a gentle hand upon his arm. "I understand, I just... I can't imagine my life without you in it. You are so important to me, you are such a big part of my life, that I just... I can't imagine you not here. I just want you to be happy..."

Silence fell between the two of you, but tears begun to fill your eyes out of fear of everything that was about to happen in your life.

"I hope you understand why I need to take this opportunity, but I completely understand if you do not want to join me. I just want you to know I love you."

"I love you too."

"I really hope I see you at the dock, but if you wish to stay here, I hope you find happiness."

Not able to handle the pain anymore, you turned away from him, hoping he didn't see the sorrow that was covering your face as tears begun to fall.
