Anne Wheeler- Heights (c)
The Greatest Showman One Shot
You felt your heart bang against your chest, almost jumping out of your ribcage as you looked down at the sand below you, your hands shaking and almost losing grip on the rope that would be your lifeline in a moment. Your head begun to spin as you felt your breathing become uneven and leave you lightheaded.
As you felt like you were about to fall over the side to what would likely be your death or severe injury, someone grabbed you by your waist and pulled you back onto the wooden floor. Anne had lost her balance, pulling you to the walkway with her, both landing on your backs. She quickly scrambled to check that you were okay, pressing her hands to your cheeks and forehead to feel how clammy and warm they have become.
"What's wrong?" She asked. "You look feint."
"I'm so sorry," you whispered, your throat dry and hoarse. "I'm scared of heights."
You had been part of Barnum's Circus since the beginning and had quickly fallen in love with the trapeze artist Anne. She was everything you wanted in a woman and all you wanted was to make her happy.
When one of her fellow trapeze artists had fallen ill, you offered to assist her in training, wanting to impress her and help her, and hoping you had gotten over your fear of heights, having not had to face them in a while. Normally you kept your feet firmly on the ground being an animal trainer who kept far from the walkways high up around the performance area, and certainly never going near the trapeze. Love did make people do stupid things, luckily Anne was able to catch you before you actual got on the trapeze and ended up hurt.
"Why the hell did you agree to help me on the trapeze then?" She questioned, pushing your hair out of your face.
"I just want to make you happy," you said weakly, hoping you hadn't done the opposite.
She shook her head at you before looking up showing her gentle smile that was plastered on her lips.
"Just being yourself makes me happy," she assured. "I would never want you to do something that distressed you or could hurt you just to benefit myself. Please do not do something so stupid again."
You returned the gentle smile. "I promise. I'm sorry for being an idiot."
"You aren't an idiot. You were just trying to impress me and it worked."
