I pity you trans/genderfluid/demi-girl/demi-boy/nonbinary, basically, person who has an explicitly feminine or masculine name. I'm happy to be born with a unisex name.
So I wrote a trans!Charles x Aaron fic. This may or may not be based off personnal experiences.
I myself am struggling with gender. I don't know if what I'm experiencing is dysphoria. I'm still just currently happy with the genderless label, but I do have a friend experiencing actual gender dysphoria and is an actual transgender and trying to transition.
While I am quite knowledgable in transgenders, I still do not know everything about them. I will only allow a transgender person to call me out. Screw you cis people trying to be special.
When you call me out though, please do and try to be respectful. I know how it feels like to get misrepresented and I understand your frustration. I will fix any mistakes you call me out for✌🏿
The book I mentioned later's also really good. It contained my first nonbinary crush and inspired me to pursue science.

    Charlotte.

Charles grimaced at the name on his phone as he wiped his cheeks. He had just woken up, and his pillows were wet, as well as his cheeks. Not really a great start to a Saturday morning. The tears were mostly dried now. He tried to remember what he cried about last night, and it just made him want to cry even more.

He had thought about going to school. Sure, he had to go to school on Monday anyway, but it had just been such a random thought. Then he thought of the stupid dress code, and the stupid fashion that he was expected to wear, completely different from the other gender, and then he started crying last night.

Then he thought of being known as a woman, of having to go to the woman's bathroom, of having to be referred to as a woman, of how no one would ever know who he actually was. When he was young, he really felt like he didn't fit, and as he grew older, it had only gotten worse.

No one would ever call him by the right gender. He could not tell anyone, because they would probably just brush it off like always. He was scared. Scared of being known as a female. He was not female. He was born into the wrong body and gender.

Charles looked at his phone again. It was his chat with Aaron. His friend was the opposite of discriminatory, so that was not the problem. The problem was that he did not know. He was not sure. He hated seeing 'Charlotte' on his phone. He could change it, but he was still scared to.

He really hated his birth name. He knew he was not suppose to, but he did. It seemed way too feminine, and he felt guilty for thinking this as well. After all, society kept forcing him to be feminine, to be a girl, and he should do that, but he could not help but feel it was wrong.

Charles sighed and stood up, looking around his room. There were a few certificates when he had graduated, and it still contained the name 'Charlotte.' He sighed and walked over to a bedside shelf. It was mostly bare, with only a few books on top of it.

Charles was not really the most avid reader, but every now and then Aaron would run up to him and start fangirling about the most recent book he had read, begging him to read it as well. He would normally not do anything like that, but it was for Aaron, so he did.

'To Charlotte Lee, my best friend <3' It had read on the front page, written in marker. Charles winced, not because the book was written on, but because of the name. It was a birthday gift he had received from Aaron, and it was actually not a bad book, even if Charles has just started six months after it was given to him.

The book was called the Edge of the Universe had included a little bit of making love between men, but Charles did not mind. Aaron didn't mind whenever his books contained it, causing him to read a wide scope of books, and if he were to read all of them, then Charles could also read whatever's given to him.

Charles sat down on his bed and began reading from where he left off. As he read the moment, he thought he himself had a dick before he looked down again and touched his jeans, realising that he didn't. He could not help but frown subconciously when he looked down where there was not. He wanted a dick. It felt really weird for him to not have one.

Charles felt his phone vibrate on the bedside shelf and closed the book, setting it down beside him and taking the phone.

Aaron: Charlotte, we have finals coming up, right? So I kinda scheduled a group study at the cafe. God knows it won't end well but eh. Tell me if you're going or not

Charles grimaced as he read the name, subconciously looking down at the empty spot in his jeans again. He wanted it all to end. He wanted people to stop referring to him as a girl. He wanted to stop being a girl. This was not him. He did not feel like one.

Charlotte: Sure. I'm coming out of my house now

Charles winced again as he read the name. He could feel a few tears forming in his eyes but he shook his head. He should not be crying about this. Perhaps this was nothing. Perhaps this was only a phase. Perhaps it was just his upbringing that made him resent the idea of being a woman.

Charles walked over to his closet, examining his clothes. There were a few dresses here and there, and some feminism clothes that made him feel guilty of not feeling like he was a girl. He had always had an excuse to not wear the dresses, but those blouses with feminism plastered on them were harder to shake.

He had a few gender neutral clothes, clothes that would make no one notice if he were a boy or girl. He liked those clothes the most. They were the only article of clothing that he felt comfortable wearing in his wardrobe. It was a chilly autumn day outside so he settled for a dark green hoodie.

He went to the mirror hanging on the wall in his room. His room was quite plain and gender neutral, so he was glad for it. He had a small trans flag tucked away in the corner. He had bought it last year during Pride Month, when there was an increase of pride flags being sold at the shop.

He had stumbled into a bookstore, one of the least likely places he would ever find himself in, but Aaron had wanted to go fill his cart full of LGBTQ+ books, so he did not mind. He was roaming through the aisles, not really knowing what he was looking for, just roaming, until he came into a section full of pride flags and books about the experiences of queer people.

Charles had seen the trans flag on the cover of the book and got curious. He had heard of the LGBTQ+ Community and of the trans community, but never really thought of himself as belonging in there, but when he picked up the book and opened it, all signs kept on saying that he was born in the wrong body.

So he took a pride flag about the size of a small welcome mat and folded it up really small so hopefully no one could easily assume what it was, then he went to the counter with Aaron and paid for it, no one knowing what it was except for him. His own little secret.

+*+

Charles looked at the pride flag. It had served as a mat now, on the floor between his bed and the wall, but no one could see it there unless they looked hard enough, and even then no one would suspect anything, so he was happy with its location there. He turned back to the mirror again.

He zipped up the dark green hoodie, glad that the hoodie was big and baggy. No one would notice that majority of the hoodie was air. No one would notice that he was trying to hide his large chest. He looked at the mirror and bit his lip, wondering what to do with his hair.

He then recalled that some men actually have their hair up in ponytails and so went for a low ponytail on his back. His hair was quite thin so if someone were to look at him from the front, they would just see his front hairs. He arranged his front hair to look a little more boyish and finally decided that he was satisfied and could classify as a guy.

He put on the hood of his hoodie for good measure as he stepped outside into the cold autumn air. The hoodie was good for many things, even keeping him warm, and he liked it. He walked over to the cafe where they would usually meet and stepped inside, it only getting a little warmer with the heaters.

He smelled the usual coffee and spied the cashier and the baristas. He knew none of them, because he was a socially awkward person when he did not have to socialise. He thought of ordering his coffee already, but he did not know whether his friends had already ordered them.

He looked around the cafe and finally found a small coffee table with four couches surounding it. He liked this cafe. There were couches, and couches were usually comfortable. Aaron's eyes met his and the other man waved him over to their table where five of their other friends where gathered.

As Charles walked through the cafe, he promised himself that he was going to be honest. That he was going to tell them. That he was going to come out. He shuddered as he thought of it. As he moved closer, his confidence slowly started to diminish, and he wondered whether he could really do it.

As he sat down, Aaron gave him a warm and encouraging smile. Charles didn't know why, but he felt his confidence boosting a little bit. His friend's smile was telling him that he was going to be alright, that he could do it. Perhaps Aaron didn't know what the smile had meant, but Charles did, and it had meant everything.

"I got you your drink in advance already," Aaron said as Charles sat down, handing the boy a drink. Charles took a few sips from it and smiled. It was his favourite, and Aaron had gotten it right once again. It didn't have any coffee because he wasn't a major fan of coffee. He was grateful to have a friend like him. Very few people remember to have it decafeinated. Then he looked at the name written on the cup. 'Charlotte.' He placed his hand over the name.

"Hey, Charlotte. You're the last one. We were just talking about JKR being the biggest and shittiest transphobe to live," Angelica said, tossing her dark and curly hair back as she took a sip of coffee from her paper cup. She looked quite pissed at some news, so it must have been awful. Charles winced at the usage of his birth name but tried not to show his discomfort.

"Is it true she's working on a book of a murderous man trying to dress up as a Muslim woman to kill people?" James asked in a nervous voice. He seemed less pissed than the others, but they all know he was also mega-irritated, seeing as he had a few trans relatives. He was just good at hiding it.

"She shouldn't be doing that! That's mean, brutal and stupid! It's transphobic and Islamphobic, and even worse, a really bad misrepresentation!" Aaron said, his voice shaking with anger, but it was still relatively controlled. He subconciously clutched Charles' hand and was holding it very tightly from the anger.

"Chill, Aaron. We know. You've been ranting about that since the moment we started talking about this," Thomas said, who was not sitting down but leaning on James' chair. Thomas rolled his eyes as he took another sip of his coffee, and Aaron had only calmed down a little bit.

Charles couldn't help but smile. So Aaron was strongly against J.K. Rowling's stupid transphobia. That was a good sign. That would mean that they would not mind if he would come out today, would they? This all seemed a little too convenient, with everyone talking about transphobia today.

"I guess that would mean trans people aren't part of the Wizarding World," Eliza said with a frown. She was one of the biggest believers of the Wizarding World out of the seven of them, and knowing her idol was one big transphobe had made her take a huge toll.

"So I guess I'm a Muggle now," Charles said with a shrug. He wondered whether anyone would catch on. It was quite tricky to come out. He doubted anyone would blatantly say who they were. Most people he knew come out through jokes.

"Wait a minute..." Aaron said, facing his friend with wide eyes and his mouth slightly opened. Charles smiled, trying to make it innocent. The rest of his friends were staring back at him and he was dying inside, wondering whether they caught up and would accept him.

"So you're..." Angelica said, trailing off. They were all still staring at him and he was still trying not to smile guiltily. He had never tried coming out as trans before and did not know if this was how it should actually go. The most he could hope for was acceptance.

"Yes..." Charles said in a small voice as he sunk lower in his chair. He felt Aaron place a reassuring hand on his shoulder and he realised that he could probably do this thing and come out, even if it was in a cafe with a few people. He took a deep breath. "I'm a man. I'm trans"

Aaron immediately got up and left. Charles' eyes widened and felt himself sinking farther into the couch. His best friend who had been sending so many encouraging signals had left him. He felt tears forming at the corner of his eyes but he did not let them fall.

"It's alright, Char—..." Eliza started, them trailed off, realising that it was definitely not alright, and that she was about to deadname him. She was not that knowledgable, but she knew better than to deadname him. They all stared out the door, wondering if the other man was coming back.

"Let that transphobe go his own way. Heck, maybe he's even a TERF. He does seem to be too supportive of feminism," Thomas said, waving the deal away lightheartedly and laughed, looking at him with a reassuring smile, but he was not all that reassured. His best friend, the one who fought so fiercely for trans rights, left the moment he came out.

"Yeah, what Thomas said. Screw him. We support you fully!" Peggy said, offering a smile as she punched the air. She did a thumbs up and smiled. Charles tried to smile. He knew he should not let it get to him. He had so many people who supported him, but he still felt sad.

"Will you get a haircut?" Eliza asked with interest and a kind smile. Charles shook his head, then shrugged. He had thought about it. He had thought about it for a really long while, and it did seem really appealing. Now that he was out, maybe he finally could.

"I don't know, honestly. Some men actually have long hair and they wear their hair in ponytails all the time," Charles said as he shrugged again. He did not really like the idea of toxic masculinity, but he felt like that was not as bad as toxic femininity. It felt more restricting for him.

"Honestly? You should get a hair cut. It would really suit you. I can already see it. It's going to look so nice. You can join me and James tomorrow. We'll take you on your first ever guys' night," Thomas said, looking at Charles as if in a trance, probably imagining the haircut.

Charles smiled. The haircut seemed more appealing now, especially since the opinion came from Thomas, and it was a well-known fact that Thomas was more or less the master of hair. Charles also looked forward to spending a day with the guys, as a guy.

"Do you have a name?" James asked, pulling the man out of his thoughts. In fact, he did have a name. He had picked out his name a few years ago. It did not seem too far from his original name, and he really liked the sound of it. He felt like it had really suited him.

"Charles Lee," he said, then his eyes widened as he said it. He had, of course, said his name a million times before, either alone or under his breath, but this was the first time he had said his full name in front of a group of people, and he had to admit it sounded nice.

Just before anyone could do anything though, the Schuylers pointed out someone behind Charles, and the girls seemed to have bright smiles painted on their faces. James and Thomas realised what they were looking at and seemed to be smiling as well. Charles turned around.

It was Aaron. Charles wanted to furrow his eyebrows at him, to be filled with utter hatred, but all those feelings quickly evaporated as he saw that the other man had something in his hands. It was pink, and blue, and white. The last time he had checked, they were the transgender flag colours.

"Had to run away to the shop Mulligan owned since he's the only one around here selling pride jackets, but I think it was worth it," Aaron said as he stopped near their table, holding the transgender flag hoodie and wearing a smile. He held the transgender hoodie out to Charles.

Charles took the hoodie and examined it with such rigor. They watched as he curiously fiddled with the zipper. This was a jacket with transgender pride puked all over it. He held out the hoodie. It had a stripe of blue, pink and white, then pink, then blue again.

It was like a trans flag, but a hoodie, and it looked soft and fluffy as well, and it had a nice texture. Charles smiled. He smiled so wide that his cheeks were beginning to hurt. He felt like he couldn't stop smiling. His face became a little red. He loved it. He loved the hoodie.

Charles smiled so wide, and he could also feel his friends' eyes on him as they smiled as well. Even if he wasn't too ready to completely come out to everyone, he had something that still showed it. He looked at Aaron with a wide smile. "Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou! You have no idea how happy this makes me! Iloveyouiloveyouiloveyousomuch!"

Aaron smiled as he watched the other man smile. Charles' smile seemed to have lit up the world, and even if he had to jog to the other end of the street to get the trans hoodie, it was definitely worth it. Charles pulled him into a hug, and he did not object, and hugged his friend just as tightly and whispered, "I love you, too"

Charles smiled into the hug, still clutching the trans hoodie as well. He could not believe it. His best friend had just gotten him a trans hoodie and he felt like all his Christmas wishes came true. Aaron pulled back a little bit from the hug, smiling at the man and said, "No wonder I can't sit on chairs normally"

Charles raised his eyebrows, wondered what that had meant. He opened his mouth to ask but it was immediately closed the moment Aaron pressed their lips together. His eyes widened, not really expecting it, but if he had being honest, he would not really complain.

The kiss had lasted two seconds, maybe three seconds, and when they pulled away, Charles could feel his entire face flushing a deep shade of scarlet. He stared at the man in front of him, who was smiling. He smiled as well. It turned out to have been something he was really looking forward to.

He heard cheers behind him and a really soft applause. A few other people were beginning to look at them, and on any other normal time, he would probably want to be sinking into a chair, but right now he did not really care. He stood where he was, still looking at Aaron.

"No homo, though... Maybe..." Aaron had added the 'maybe' as an afterthought and sent him an innocent smile as he sat back down on the couch.
Charles sat down as well, still in a daze. He felt speechless. He did not know what to do, but he knew he wanted Aaron.

"Mmm... I dunno. That's kinda gay," Thomas said the moment the two of them sat down. He was smiling as well and his eyebrows were raised in a teasing manner that made Charles want to fade out of the room, but then Aaron had held his hand and he figured otherwise.

"Guys, Aaron said 'no homo.' It's not gay if you say 'no homo' right afterwards," Peggy said, who was also smiling. She seemed to have been very proud of the two of them as she had picked up her coffee and beamed. Charles felt really good. Aaron squeezed his hand and he squeezed back.

"What made you do it?" Angelica asked, who raised her eyebrows in the same teasing manner as Thomas, but she had also seemed proud of the two of them. Charles looked at the man in front of him, not really knowing what made him do it neither. He wanted to know.

"Hey, I'm in love with him. How do I know? I don't, but I kinda also do. Not even Theodosia could make me feel this happy, and Charles' smile is worth the whole world," Aaron said, looking at the man with a loving smile. Charles' face flushed a deeper shade of scarlet, not used to having such loving words directed towards him, and for them to have used the right pronouns and name.

"That's very homosexual," James said with a small chuckle as he reached to get someone else's drink, but Thomas immediately smacked his arm and just told him to drink water. Charles smiled. He was glad. He was out, and he found out his best friend loved him.

"I didn't know I was in love with a man, so when Charles came out, click, boom. I realised I was bisexual and decided that now's a good a time as ever to come out. It also got me a little bonus something," Aaron said, elbowing Charles playfully, making him flush scarlet even more.

"I love you, Charles" Aaron said as he wrapped his arm around Charles and smile. Charles smiled as well. He felt happy. He did not know why. He was not even sure if it was love, but whatever it is, he liked it. It was nice, and he would not mind feeling like this for the rest of his life.

"I love you, too, Aaron."
