Chapter 7 - Learn to do it

- Chapter 7 - Learn to do it -
Ship - Jack, Mush, Race, and Davey fluff
Canon AU
Song: Learn to do it - Anastasia (the Broadway Musical)

Jack (17), Race (15), and Mush (16) circle Davey (16), who was confused. He just wanted to be done with this.

The three boys knew they needed to teach him about selling papes and the history behind it if he ever wanted to be good at it.

"We have a lot of work to do" Mush mumbles. Davey shoots him a look, offended.

"It can't be that hard" Davey mumbles. Jack and Mush burst out laughing, as Race snickers a bit.

"We've lots and lots to teach you and the time is going fast" Race sings, patting Davey on the shoulder. He was shorter than Davey, sadly.

"Let's see you walk. Head up! Regal bearing!" Jack exclaims. Race and Mush snicker.

Race: Now, shoulders back and stand up tall
And do not walk, but try to float

He fixes Davey's posture, while singing.

Davey: I feel a little foolish
Am I floating?

Mush: Like a sinking boat

Race shoots Mush a glare, as Davey sighs in defeat. He did not think this would be this hard.

Race: You give a coin

He hands Davey a dime.

Davey studies the coin in his hands.
What happens now?

"You get your papes?" Mush deadpans. Davey nods.

Jack, Race: Most of all remember this:

Race: If I can learn to do it
You can learn to do it

Jack: Something in you knows it

Mush, Race: There's nothing to it!

Jack: Follow in my footsteps
Shoe by shoe!

He leads Davey, as Davey tries to follow/copy him.

Race, Mush: You can learn to do it too!

Mush: Now, elbows in and sit up straight
And do not say 'hi' to the Delanceys

"Why not?" Davey questions. Mush facepalms.

"Just don't, it's for your benefit, seeing as you can't fight" Jack responds. Davey rolls his eyes, as Mush snickers again.

Mush: The harbor!

Race: The Brooklyn bridge!

Davey: Sell and then goodnight?

Jack, Mush: Not until you get this right!

Race: If I can learn to do it

Mush: If we can learn to do it

Jack: You can learn to do it!

Mush: You can learn to do it

Race: Pull yourself together

Race, Mush: And you'll pull through it!

Jack: Tell yourself it's easy

Race, Mush: And it's true!

Jack, Race, Mush: You can learn to do it, too!

"Who is the highest person in 'the World'?" Jack questions. Davey thinks for a moment.

"Joseph Pulitzer" Davey answers. Jack nods, satisfied.

"The highest person in the Journal?" Mush questions. Davey panics, he forgot this one.

"Uh- William Randolph Hearst" Davey answers. Mush nods.

"Our worst enemy is?" Race questions. Davey shrugs, he knew his own worst enemy.

"Joseph Pulitzer" Davey answers, sounding unsure of himself.

"Wrong! Your worst enemy is-" Jack starts, but he's cut off.

"I know who my worst enemy is!" Davey exclaims, getting annoyed.

"What a temper!" Mush mumbles. Davey glares at him.

"I don't like being contradicted!" Davey exclaims. Mush's glare turns confused.

"That makes two of us!" Race exclaims, as Mush mumbles, "I don't know what that means."

Jack steps in between the three boys.
"Continuing on..."

Davey: I've had it, and I hate you all!
I'm sorry that we ever met!
I'm hungry, I'm frightened
And I'm only human, don't forget!
I don't know anything about this stuff.
Just stop and let me be!

Race and Mush step back, a little annoyed, but also shocked that Davey blew up.

Jack: Davey, darling, look at me

Davey turns his glare to Jack, a little confused and red at the fact that Jack called him 'darling'.

Jack: We're all frightened
Well, slightly, now and then
Shall we start again?
Take a breath, count to ten
You have courage
And strength you barely know
So blow that little nose
And dry those pretty eyes
A person like yourself
Can do this if he tries!
Ready?

Race and Mush snicker a bit, as Davey turns a little pink. Jack called him pretty, courageous, strong, and also little, but he was smaller than Jack, by a little bit.

Race: Set

Mush: Go!

Jack: Now here's our great friend, Medda

Mush, as he looks dreamily at the sky: How she frolicked on the stage

"Oh?" Davey questions. Jack brushes it off.

Race: Our distant friend, Arrow, loves his Newsies

Jack: Got it, Davey?

"No!" Davey exclaims, feeling overwhelmed.

Race and Mush go over other random pieces of knowledge about the Newsies and their enemies that Davey can't seem to pick up, as he starts to get overwhelmed.

Race: Snyder the Spider

Mush: Has a metal cane (or as Spot calls it, a 'pimp-cane')

Race, mumbling: I hear he's gotten very fat

Davey: And I recall his yellow badge!

"I don't believe we told him that" Mush mumbles. Race nods, and Davey smiles.

Race, Mush, Jack: If you can learn to do it

Davey: I can learn to do it!

He was grinning now, and Race and Mush didn't seem to think that he was totally helpless anymore. He just was with fighting, but his brains could help them.

Jack: He can learn to do it!

Davey: You can learn to do it!

Race: Pull yourself together

Jack, Davey, Race, Mush: And we'll pull through it!

Jack: Tell yourself it's easy

Race, Davey, Mush: And it's true!

Jack, Race, Davey: You can learn to do it

Mush: Nothing to it!

He and Race high-five, proud of themselves and Davey.

Jack, Davey, Mush, Race: You can learn to do it

Davey: The harbor, the Brooklyn Bridge, the newspaper, the metal cane, the Newsies' friend, the kid was short, here a wart (Snyder) and there a badge. The flirts name is Romeo, so tell me something new!

Mush, Race: Ha!

They grin at each other, high-fiving, as Jack and Davey grin. Jack hugs Davey, making Davey turn a little pink.

Jack, Race, Davey, Mush: You can learn to do it, too!

"He wasn't totally helpless" Mush states, impressed.

"I'm impressed, school boy, not many people can do that, especially if they're a shy, school boy" Race tells Davey, who blushes a bit.

"Nice job! You're officially a Newsie!" Jack exclaims, as he puts a Newsie hat of Davey's head, and Mush hands Davey a pape bag.

"I did it" Davey whispers to himself, a bit proud. Jack, Race, and Mush smile.

I'm a bit proud of this one. It's not horrible.
