Hate me

It was Sunday, Corey hated Sundays not because he had school the next day but because of the one other thing that Sunday always meant. He had to go to Church, and he hated it with a fiery passion, he only went because his parents made him. He silently seethed in his seat when they got there and whenever everyone stood he didn't, he refused to.

A great number of people in Peaceville went to Church and during the service they did what they were supposed to, if told to stand they would. When they were asked to pray they did, Corey just continued to sit in his seat looking pissed. Then the preacher read from the Bible and Corey glared at the man as he listened to him talk.

"Under John 8:44 the Bible says, 'You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.'"

"The devil is in each of us but we must not listen to him or believe his lies, we must fight the devil."

Everyone in the room agreed but Corey just got angrier and stopped listening because he knew he'd get even angrier. He forced himself to calm down a bit before he did something he'd regret, he really hated this place. When people started singing his father tried getting him to sing too but Corey just gave him a harsh glare.

His family knew how much he hated being here, they might be able to drag him here but they couldn't force him to participate. He never even spoke when they went here and anyone that was smart wouldn't go near him. After what felt like forever the service ended but that didn't mean he got to leave because now he had Sunday school.

The older kids were separated from the younger ones but he and Trina were still in the same group. Kin and Kon didn't go to Church but Laney did and he knew she kept glancing at him over and over again. Trina was always a bit grumpy at Church because Mina didn't go either but that changed whenever Nick was around.

Nick was in their group too so Trina was staring at him from where he sat which Corey was irritated about. He knew why he was irritated but he didn't care at the moment considering where he still was. Their teacher knew he never wanted to be here but she hadn't given up on trying to at least get him more involved.

Today they were talking about the angels, more specifically the archangels, and Corey just kept checking the clock. The teacher, whom everyone called Liz, looked at him, "Corey, do you want to share anything about the archangels?"

"No."

"Oh come on, just try."

Corey somehow looked even more irritated but he knew she wouldn't stop so he answered anyway. "There are only three angels actually named in the bible which are Michael, Gabriel, and Lucifer, all of whom are archangels."

Liz nodded, "Except only Michael and Gabriel are actually archangels."

Corey glared at her slightly, "Wrong."

Liz paused, "What?"

"Your wrong, Lucifer fell from heaven but before he fell he was an archangel and technically still is. Archangels are defined as angels that 'stand in the presence of God', and Lucifer was one of those angels. After he fell God made him guard the gates of hell to punish him but that doesn't suddenly make it so he's not an archangel."

Liz's smile seemed a bit more forced now, "But Lucifer is bad, he's the devil, so he's not an archangel."

Corey's hand actually twitched like he was going to hit something, instead he just got up and left. He wanted to punch something, namely Liz, and that wouldn't end well for anyone so he had to leave. He threw the door to the room open and when it hit the wall the sound made several people wince and Corey left.

His exit caught the attention of the older Sunday school group but no one tried to stop him from walking out. Corey went outside and he didn't even try just waiting by the car, he just went home himself, he wanted to be anywhere but there. He got home and he knew the house would be empty for obvious reasons, he unlocked the door with his key and walked in.

He wanted to throw something, anything, but he knew he shouldn't which made him angrier. He saw that red glow again and he went to his room to try and calm down, he just listened to music to quell his temper. About an hour after he got home he heard the front door open which meant his family was home.

When his mom knocked on his door he didn't answer, he didn't want to talk about what was going through his head right now. About half an hour later he went to the garage and the others were already waiting just like yesterday. The only difference was that this time they looked ever so slightly worried, Laney probably told Kin and Kon what happened.

Laney spoke, "Hey Core, you okay?"

Corey responded immediately, it almost sounded mechanical, "I'm fine, just forget about it."

Kin spoke, "Dude, maybe-."

Corey cut him off, "I'm fine, really, I just want to practice."

The three looked at each other but instead of continuing to ask questions they just went over to their respective instruments and got ready to play. Corey did the same and they started practicing, thankfully they seemed to be doing better then yesterday. After going through it once or twice they could play the whole song without making more then one or two mistakes.

By the end they had it almost completely down, they didn't need the music other then for the occasional reference in between run throughs. If they went home and memorized the rest of it they should be ready to play by the time they were supposed to perform.

Corey seemed to at least feel better as they practiced and it seemed like everyone forgot about the incident by the end. They all went home after practice was over and Laney was going to stay but Corey urged her to not worry and just go home. She did and now Corey was a bit tired, this day had already been really exhausting and he wanted to take a nap.

Corey was going to walk up to his room but when he walked into the living room he saw Nick sitting in the living room with Trina. Corey paused as he tried to figure out when Nick got here, based on how unhappy Nick looked he'd say he'd been there for a while. When Nick saw Corey he immediately stood up, "Hey Corey I wanted to talk to you."

Nick pushed Corey to the front door and then outside while Trina stared at them in shock as they quickly left. Once Nick closed the front door behind them he seemed to be back to his usual chill self. They walked down the front steps as Corey spoke, "What was that?"

Nick looked slightly uncomfortable, "I came to see how you were doing and ended up waiting for you while Trina talked, a lot."

Corey hummed, "Okay, I can see why you wanted to leave so much now."

They were quiet for a second and unlike every other time this silence was almost suffocating. Nick eventually broke it, "So, are you okay?"

Corey looked away, "I'm fine."

Nick obviously didn't believe him, "What happened, why were you so mad?"

"I'm always mad when I have to go there, I just got even more mad because whether or not it's due to arrogance I hate it when people lie."

Nick raised an eyebrow, "But didn't you lie by hiding who you are?"

"That's different."

"How is it different?"

Corey looked a bit angry again, "Because people hate who I really am."

Nick froze due to his shock and Corey stopped a few steps ahead of him, "I didn't always pretend. When I didn't pretend I asked questions when no one else would, I spoke my thoughts and stood up for what I thought was right. It ended up getting me in a lot of trouble, I started hiding who I am because people would hate me otherwise."

Nick continued to stare at Corey for a few seconds before he gently urged Corey to walk with him without saying a word. Nick led Corey to the same park they went to two nights ago and they sat at the same bench, they still hadn't said a word. Nick soon walked over to a nearby vending machine and when he came back he held out a soda to Corey.

The musician took it, "Thanks."

Nick nodded and sat down as he opened his own soda and took a drink, Corey just held the soda in his hands. Nick finally broke the ever growing silence, "I'm sorry for whatever happened to you."

Corey just sighed, "It was my own damn fault."

"But you didn't do anything wrong."

Corey laughed but it was emotionless and hollow, "A lot of people would disagree with you on that. I mean I'm still mad about what happened, I'm not going to say I'm not, but I'm not going to apologize nor will I ever get an apology."

Nick was quiet for a second, Corey had finally opened his soda and he took a drink, "Do you really think people would hate you for being yourself?"

Corey kept his eyes fixed on the space in front of him, "I know they would, honestly I don't think anyone wouldn't hate me."

Now that actually seemed to make Nick mad, before Corey could really process what was going on Nick had made Corey look at him and kissed him. Corey was completely shocked, he hadn't expected Nick to ever kiss him nor for him to even get angry. Nick seemed to be patiently waiting to see whether Corey would push him away or not and Corey eventually kissed back.

He'd be lying if he said he didn't like Nick, he'd always sort of liked him but these past few days made him like Nick more. A few seconds after Corey kissed back Nick pulled away, "I don't hate you, I'd never hate you."

Corey felt like he couldn't speak anymore, he leaned his head on Nick's shoulder as he felt tears gather in his eyes. He didn't know how much he needed to hear someone say that until now, Nick hugged him and Corey smiled. He hadn't cried in a very long time but now a few tears fell from his eyes and he didn't try to stop them.
