The White Stripes Albums Ranked
I've started ranking music videos, so why not albums? I used to put a brief mention in the introduction to my top 15 (or 33, in this case) favorites list, but why not explain why?
These lists will be based on any released album that includes UNIQUE songs. Singles will not be included.
For this list, since Jack White has contributed to more than one band, the Acoustic Recordings album will not be included since only a portion of the album is comprised of songs specifically written for The White Stripes.
This leaves 6 albums to work with.
6) Elephant
Whoa boy, I can already hear people yelling at me. Listen, I love every single one of The White Stripes' albums. I just can't put every one of their albums at the top. Some of my favorite songs are on this album, such as In the Cold Cold Night, The Hardest Button to Button, or The Air Near My Fingers. And how could anyone truly hate the classic Seven Nation Army? This song is hands down one of the best some written by the band. That's one thing I really love about the duo - none of their songs are overrated because every single song they've written that is really popular deserves all the love and popularity that it has been given already.
The only reason why this got the bottom door is because it has the least number of songs that I can really enjoy and get into. The songs I love are my favorites, but then there are the others that I still really enjoy, but wouldn't be the first to come to my mind when someone asks me about my favorite songs.
5) Get Behind Me Satan
I feel like this album should be higher...but I had to put the other albums higher. I love all of these songs, even the weird ones like Passive Manipulation. I'm Lonely is actually my favorite song of the album next to Blue Orchid, which I'm sad to say is not an extremely popular opinion. In the end, I had to put it in this slot because overall, the feel to the music (though it did improve off White Blood Cells) was one of my lease favorites compared to others. It made me think of the atmosphere of a studio. Don't take that as a bad thing - I, myself, want to take my career in the studio recording music. It's just not my favorite.
4) The White Stripes
I agree with a lot of people when they say that The White Stripes improved with every album. That's not to say that Icky Thump is the best, it just seems like with every album, the duo seemed to get more and more comfortable playing the music and adding their own sound to it. This album was a great start, and I love all the powerful some in here like The Big Three Killed My Baby, Jimmy the Exploder, Astro, Screwdriver, When I Hear My Name, One Now Cup of Coffee, Sugar Never Tasted So Good, and Stop Breaking Down. I just love this album so much and I just couldn't put it in the lowest slot.
3) De Stijl
This album it's amazing by ALL means. This is the album that I can fully enjoy and get into the majority of the songs. I feel like it had the potential to be my favorite because of this alone. Truth Doesn't Make A Noise, You're Pretty Good Looking, Hello Operator, and OF COURSE Apple Blossom, one of my absolute favorites. I love this album start to finish, and it really stands out as my favorite album that is blues-influenced.
2) White Blood Cells
I know I put Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan as the lowest, but hopefully I can redeem myself with this pick. I don't think I've ever met a single person that didn't enjoy at least one song off this album, whether it be Fell in Love With a Girl, Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, We're Going to Be Friends, or the famous Hotel Yorba. This album has all of my favorite songs on it, including an early favorite, Offend in Every Way. Although I don't always listen to every song here, it is still the best album they've released, at least in my opinion. Even the weird, experimental songs are my absolute favorites - Little Room is one of them, and Aluminum is just amazing in of itself.
1) Icky Thump
This album was my initial favorite by the band when I first started listening to their music. I was debating whether it really was my favorite or not, but although I only listen to about half the album, the song I do love are the ones I'm always coming back to. I loved this album because I became a big fan of this band on a long, round-trip car ride to my grandparents' golden anniversary. I only had a few songs downloaded, and the road from Southern California to Arizona doesn't have the best service due to it being it in the middle of pretty much nowhere, so when I got hooked on the artist, I could only listen to those few songs I had downloaded: Seven Nation Army, Conquest, and of course, Icky Thump (there might have been one or two others but I don't know). Surprisingly, I wasn't the biggest fan of Seven Nation Army when I first heard it. The sound seemed really to me, and I preferred the booming sound of my high school marching band playing it on the low brass and woodwind instruments to the actual recording of the song. Obviously, it grew on me quite a lot, but either way, I was HOOKED on Icky Thump. I played that song on a loop for at least half an hour, if not longer. The lyrics were always kind of meet to me with the obvious invitation to share a bed with a girl you've never met, but it doesn't make me uncomfortable, and something inappropriate is the last thing on my mind when I listen to it, which is really how I decipher what songs are appropriate or not. The other song on this album that I heard was Rag and Bone. If you think I was hooked on Icky Thump, think again, because this song was worse. For a while, it was the only song I wanted to listen to by the band or anyone else in particular.
This album is obviously more folk related (in mind, at least), which is a genre that I don't really listen to on a daily basis. As I later discovered this, it kind of fell to be my least favorite album. It just took a little bit of time getting used to. Now I can talk praise about You Don't Know What Love Is; Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn; the amazing A Martyr For My Love For You; and especially the fabulous Effect and Cause. This song is constantly stuck in my head, but you don't see me complaining.
