Chapter 15 The Only Exception
A/N: Sorry for the late update. I wrote this chapter a week ago (I think) and I got distracted with a couple of ideas for a couple of new books,(Because I NEED more things to write right now XD) well one was only supposed to be a one shot but I'm currently on Chapter 4 of that one so, you see how that went. I will eventually publish what I have of that one too. I'm kind of in Creative Limbo with Catch Me If You Can So Updates for that one will be slow sorry about that.
Also Still having trouble working out the spacing issues so sorry if this chapter looks like a mess.
Lyric sat at the kitchen table obsessively writing and erasing and then playing a few chords on her guitar before shaking her head in frustration and erasing off of her paper again. She reached a shaky hand out to her third cup of coffee that morning just before her father took it from her.
"You are cut off until you stop vibrating." He said. Lyric sighed.
"Probably wise.. Is it possible for a 17 year old to have a heart attack?" She asked.
"Why don't you take a break honey you've been at this all night."
"Because I don't know how to take a break. This is due after thanksgiving break and I have nothing! I have been waiting all this time to work on an Original piece for Mr. Jones class and when the time comes, I have nothing I can't do it. My inspiration is spent." Lyric groaned.
"Let me see what you have."Darren said and reached out for her notebook he took it and started reading over it.
"This is looking good Lyric it really is. You just need a break to recharge. Why don't you start helping me get prepared for dinner tonight maybe Mr. Jones can help you when he comes over later."
Yes. it is entirely possible for a 17 year old to have a heart attack "Uh. What?" Lyric asked.
"I didn't tell you I invited him to dinner?" Darren asked.
"No. No you didn't." Lyric said. "Why did you invite him to dinner?"
"Well he had something he wanted to share with all of us, and I figured the least I could do was cook the man dinner."
"Or.. not? Dad that's so weird." Lyric sighed and ran her hands through her hair. Things had been incredibly tense between her and Killian since last month when she had gone to that party, even more so that her and Will had started dating after that and he caught them kissing in between classes a couple weeks ago, she hadn't even gotten the chance to tell him that she had broken up with Will just before break and he had changed his number so texting was not an option. They were strictly Student and Teacher nothing more, nothing less and Killian made it seem like a cake walk, while Lyric was living in her own personal hell.
"Why is that weird?" Darren asked.
"I don't know it just is. It was weird enough when he came over to play cards with you. Now hes coming over for dinner?" Lyric asked.
"You'll survive." Darren chuckled. "Why don't you invite Will?"
"Because I broke up with Will before break.." Lyric shrugged. "We're still friends its just kind of awkward."
"Why did you break up?" Darren asked.
"It just didn't feel right." Lyric replied, and it didn't. Nothing had felt right, not since Killian.
"Well, sometimes that happens." Darren smiled. "You okay?"
"Yeah. Dad I'm fine. I'm just mortified you invited my teacher over for dinner."
"Oh hush and help me peel potatoes." Darren smirked.
Lyric sat in her room typing out a report for history when her skype started ringing she put her headset on and flipped on her webcam and answered the call.
"Hey Tink." She smiled. "Hows Boston?"
"Ugh. Boring without you, my moms family has already started the inevitable Thanksgiving week war with my Dad family."
"Ouch." Lyric laughed.
"Tyler says Hi by the way." Tink said with a wink.
"Gross." Lyric said and rolled her eyes.
"How are things going for you?" Tink asked.
"Good I guess. I'm just taking a break from helping my parents make dinner.. For Mr. Jones."
"Oh God. I wish I could be there that sounds much more fun." Tink laughed.
"For you, for me it's going to be awkward as hell. He hardly looks at me. I'm surprised he even agreed to it."
"I'm not." Tink said and shrugged.
"Why?" Lyric asked.
"I..might have talked to him." Tink said. Lyric put her head in her hands and groaned.
"You didn't! He didn't even know you knew!"
"Well.. now he does." Tink said.
"Oh God.. Tink what did you say??"
Tink walked into the smokey bar she never saw the same appeal in them that Lyric had, but usually went along with her anyways for support. However this time she was alone, with one mission. Find Killian, which wasn't too hard he was at the bar with a flock of women around him that were trying to flirt their way to free drinks. She rolled her eyes and walked over and sat down.
"Be with you in a second sweetheart." He said. No wonder Lyric fell head over heels for that.
"Take your time Mr. Jones." Tink said. Killian's head whipped around in her direction and his eyes widened.
"Eddie. Watch the bar. Give anyone free drinks and you are fired." Killian said and walked around the bar.
"Outside." He muttered to Tink as he walked past her. Tink followed him out the back door.
"You, can't be here." Killian said. "You have a fake ID too?"
"Yeah. Lyric and I got them together." Tink shrugged.
"She here?" He asked.
"No. Just me."
"So I take it you know." Killian sighed
"Yeah, I know. But I'm not going to tell anyone, Lyric is my best friend.I would never do that to her."
"What are you doing here Tink?" Killian asked.
"I came to talk to you about what happened at the party that night."
"I don't care what happened at the party. Its over and done with I have more important things to worry about." Killian shrugged.
"That's bullshit and you know it. She didn't sleep with him. She was drunk and she made a mistake."
"So she didn't sleep with him. She's with him now. I caught them making out in the hallway." Killian said with an eye roll.
"She broke up with him yesterday, because she said it didn't feel right and that nothing has felt right since you."
"She said that?" Killian asked.
"Yeah. She did so maybe, just maybe don't be such an asshole. She knows what she did was wrong, and she still hasn't forgiven herself. I have to go. I'm supposed to be home packing for a trip to Boston this week. Just talk to her." Tink said and walked away. Killian sighed. These girls were going to kill him.
"Lyric, Mr. Jones is here." Darren said as he poked his head in Lyrics room. Lyric turned around in her computer chair.
"I'm really busy with this report. Can I just.. Not?" She asked.
"Don't be rude, come downstairs and say Hi." Darren said and scowled.
I really don't want to. And I'm sure he would rather I stay up here too.
"Fine." Lyric sighed.
"Don't be so dramatic."
Lyric closed her laptop. "I'll be down in a minute." She said and shooed her dad out of the room so she could change out of her lounge pants. She walked over to her closet and opened it and dug around looking for something to wear. She went with a pair of jeans with holes torn in various spots on the legs, and a dark green sweater. She threw her hair in half up half down top knot and sighed heavily before leaving the room. She walked down the stairs and there he was sitting on the couch with a navy blue dress shirt and a black leather waistcoat and a tight pair of black jeans. His shirt was only buttoned up to the third button from the top exposing that damn chest hair. Lyric's breath caught in her throat as he turned his icy blue gaze on her and gave her an awkward smile and wave.
"Miss Mckenna." He greeted.
"Mr. Jones." She mumbled and hurried off to the kitchen to see if her mother needed help while her Dad and Killian sat and talked.
Later they all sat around the table eating and making small talk. Killian had awkwardly complimented the food at least three times in the past 30 minutes and Lyric had hardly said anything at all. Killian cleared his throat and looked across the table at her.
"So, Lyric.. How is your original piece coming?" He asked. Lyric stared at him for a moment like a deer in the headlights in disbelief that he had actually spoke to her directly.
"Uh. Good." was all she managed to say before shoveling another fork full of mashed potatoes in her mouth to avoid speaking anymore.
"She was up all night working on it. I don't think she got any sleep." Darren chuckled.
"I'd love to hear what you have so far." Killian smiled. Lyric swallowed the potatoes in her mouth.
"Um.. Well I'd rather you just wait until it's done.." She said quietly.
"But it was sounding really good." Sarah smiled.
"I'd just like to wait until it's finished." Lyric said again and looked down at her plate.
"That's fine. I'll hear it after break." Killian said. Darren's phone chimed and he looked down at it concerned and then got up and went to look out the window.
"What's wrong Dad?" Lyric asked.
"Oh that Winter storm is coming in a little earlier than expected the roads are getting bad. Killian you may be sleeping on our couch." He said.
"Oh..N-no I couldn't." Killian stuttered out.
"Of course you can, I'd feel horrible if you drove home and got into an accident." Darren said sitting back down at the table. "Its fine we have plenty of room and the couch folds out." He assured. Killian looked at Lyric for approval not wanting to make her any more uncomfortable than she already was. Lyric didn't want Killian risking his life for the sake of her comfort so she gave him a discreet nod of approval.
"So, Killian, Darren was telling me you had some news you wanted to share with us." Sarah said with a smile.
"Oh. Yes! Its..actually about Lyric." Killian said. Lyric felt her stomach turn what was he going to say? Was he going to tell them what happened this summer? He couldn't. That would be horrible. Lyrics father was not a violent man, but she would not put it past him to leap across the table and stab Killian with his steak knife at that bit of news. Lyric looked up at him.
"W..what about me?" She managed to squeak out and then braced herself.
"Well, I spoke with a friend of mine at Juilliard..and I managed to talk him into giving you the last spot for an audition and a tour of the school in April if you are up for it." He smiled. "All expenses are paid. You'll have to travel with me though."
Lyrics mouth dropped open and her fork fell to the floor tears welled in her eyes and she didn't know whether to laugh, scream, or cry or all of the above.
"Lyric.. Honey. Say something." Darren said nudging her shoulder.
"I think you broke her Mr. Jones." Sarah laughed.
"I.. you.. I..got an audition? Juillard?" She sputtered out not able to form a complete sentence.
"Yes." Killian chuckled. Lyric stood from the table and walked over to Killian and nearly knocked him out of his chair she hugged him so tightly.
"You did this for me?" She asked her voice cracking with emotion.
"Yes. You deserved it." Killian said. Lyric pulled away looking into his eyes. The blue eyes she had been afraid to look at for the last month and she realized how badly she had missed them. She quickly let go of him and went back to her seat trying to make this as less awkward as possible.
"Thank you. Thank you so much." She said and smiled.
"Of course." Killian said returning her smile.
The roads had gotten worse and there was no way that Killian was going to be able to drive home. The four of them sat in the living room playing a card game while the stereo played in the background laughing and having a good time every now and then Killian and Lyric would find each other staring and would quickly glance away as if it mattered but everything was going fine. Until..a familiar piano melody began playing on the stereo.
"OH this is one of Lyrics favorite songs." Darren smiled and turned it up a little. Lyric's eyes stung with tears
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses...
Lyric was suddenly overwhelmed by emotion what used to be one of her favorite songs was reducing her to a crying mess and no one else in the room but Killian knew why.
"I'm.. Uh. I'm really tired. I'm going to.. Go to bed." Lyric said and stood up. "Goodnight, mom.. Dad. Mr. Jones."
"Goodnight baby." Darren said and kissed her on the cheek.
"Night.. Miss Mckenna." Killian said and watched her walk up the stairs wiping tears from her eyes.
Killian tried his best to sleep that night but he couldn't get Lyric off of his mind and it didn't help that he knew she was awake because he could hear her strumming softly on her guitar. He stood up. He knew that this was the last thing he should be doing, It was a huge risk. He was in her house, with her parents home yet, he walked up the stairs quietly and followed the sounds of lyric playing. Her door was open just a crack so he pushed it open just a little so he could watch her. She was sitting on her bed in a pair of sleep shorts and a tank top strumming on her guitar and singing softly. He knew the song, and hearing her singing it with her voice breaking from emotion and tears streaming down her face was heart wrenching. He knew that it was for him.
And I've always lived like this
Keeping a comfortable, distance
And up until now
I had sworn to myself that I'm content
With loneliness
Because none of it was ever worth the risk
But, you are, the only exception
Killian stepped into the room and closed the door behind him locking it. He walked over and crouched down in front of Lyric Her hands were shaking on the guitar and her soft cries had turned to muffled sobs as she tried to stay quiet so she wouldn't wake up her parents.
"I'm so sorry." She choked out. Killian took her guitar from her and set it aside.
"Shh.." He said and pulled her close to him. "Its okay love. I'm sorry too."
"I didn't sleep with him." she said as her tears soaked through his shirt.
"I know."
"I don't feel anything for him. I broke up with him it wasn't right. Nothing has felt right. No one has felt right. No one but you." she said.
"I know, I feel the same." Killian whispered and pressed his lips to her the top of her head running his fingers through her silky brown locks.
"I love you." He whispered. Lyric looked up at him. Her dark blue eyes widened.
"After everything I did?" She asked.
"None of it matters." Killian smiled and Wiped her tears away with his thumbs
"I..love you too." Lyric said. Killian leaned in and kissed her. Lyric gasped at the sudden sense of electricity that was coursing through her veins. The spark that she had felt when they first touched was back and it was more powerful than ever. Her fingers worked on the buttons of his shirt pulling them apart. Killian pulled away.
"Love we are in your house. Your parents are right down the hall."
"Don't. Care." Lyric mumbled pulling him back to her lips. "Need you." She said as she pulled away and then crashed her lips back into his. He broke away from the kiss and pulled her tank top over her shoulders and pushed his Navy blue shirt off and tossed it onto the floor. Lyric shimmied out of her shorts. Killian unbuttoned his pants and pushed them down stepping out of them before leaning her gently back against her pillows and settled himself on top of her
"I missed you. So much." Killian whispered to her and they were connected again and nothing else in the world mattered because as far as they were concerned all was right.
Killian glanced down at Lyric sleeping peacefully while he buttoned his shirt he would have given anything to climb in bed and fall asleep next to her, just so she knew when she woke up, that he wasn't going anywhere this time. To hell with what Liam thought, to hell with what anyone thought. They would find a way to make it work with school. They had to because he couldn't stay away from her. He leaned down and pressed his lips to her temple. She stirred a little but snuggled into to her pillow with a smile on her face.
"I love you." He whispered before quietly sneaking out of the room and down the stairs back to the living room couch.
The next morning Killian woke up to the smell of fresh coffee, bacon, and french toast. He sat up and stretched before getting off the couch and walking into the kitchen. Lyric was cooking breakfast. He looked around there was no sign of her parents so he crept up behind her and put his hands on her hips. She melted into his touch and pressed her back to his chest.
"If this is what I wake up to, I might have to pop over for dinner during the next winter storm." He whispered and pressed a kiss to her neck.
"Mm You might." She grinned. She turned around and looked at him and tried to hide a giggle.
"What?" he asked.
"You, Sir..have a bad case of bed head." She said and ran her hands through his messy dark hair that was sticking up in random places trying to fix it.
"Well, I'm sorry we can't all roll out of bed looking like a goddess." Killian smirked. Lyric blushed and then quickly turned back to the stove smelling that her bacon was burning. She took it out of the pan and put it on a plate and turned off the stove.
"Breakfast is done." She smiled and carried plates over to the table. Darren and Sarah walked down the stairs. "Something smells amazing." Darren said. "Lyric did you do all of this?" He asked.
"Yeah. I got up early I figured I could make breakfast for Kil-Mr. Jones before he had to leave." She smiled and walked over to the coffee pot and poured some coffee for Killian and brought it to him when he sat down.
"Thank you Lyric." Killian smiled.
"You're welcome Mr. Jones." Lyric grinned.
"What no coffee for Dad?" Darren asked.
"Its your house, get your own coffee." Lyric smirked. "Kidding." She said and walked back over to the coffee pot to pour more coffee for her parents and herself and sat down.
"Ah. Before you drink that did you sleep?" Darren asked. "I know you didn't sleep the night before."
"Yes, Dad.I slept." She smiled.
After breakfast Killian was getting ready to leave.
"I'm going to walk Mr. Jones to his car." Lyric said.
"Okay, put your coat on its cold." Sarah called from the kitchen. Lyric put her coat on and slipped her snow boots on and followed Killian outside walking to his car with him.
"So what are you doing for Thanksgiving?" Lyric asked.
"Having dinner with Liam and his wife. You should come." Killian said. "Liam knows about you. He's not overjoyed that I'm seeing a student, but he'll warm up to it once he knows you better." "What time? I can try to sneak out. I have family coming in." Lyric said and groaned.
"Its at 4." he said and chuckled. "I take it you don't like your family?"
"I love my family, its just every year I have to listen to my grandfather try to talk me into going to law school."
"Not a big music fan?" Killian asked.
"He just thinks I need to do something better with my life." Lyric shrugged. "My parents were in a weird..punk band together and my dad invested everything into it and my grandfather ended up having to bail him out of financial problems. I was only 1 yet somehow I got roped into the feud. He thinks I should have a back up plan, in case music doesn't work out for me. But it's the only thing I've ever wanted to do. I'd rather stab myself in the eye with a spoon than go to law school."
"So tell him that." Killian shrugged.
"Do you fancy wars Mr. Jones? Because that's how you start World war 3" Lyric said.
"I think you are over exaggerating love." Killian smiled. "If you can sneak out, Dinner is at 4 you can call me and I will meet you somewhere to pick you up."
"Except you changed your number." Lyric said and quirked an eyebrow at him.
"I put the new one in your phone last night after you slipped into your post sex coma." He smirked. Lyrics face turned crimson. Killian laughed.
"You're so cute when you blush. Especially when I'm the one making you do it."
"Hush you." Lyric said and pushed his shoulder. "So we are actually doing this?" She asked. Killian nodded. "Yes. I know it's going to be a lot but there are only 7 months of school left and the only thing we are risking right now is my job. I looked into it, the legal age for consent in Maine is 16, so we aren't breaking any laws."
"But its still your job Killian." Lyric said. "If you get fired.. Because of me, I'd never forgive myself."
"I'm not going to get fired, because no one is going to find out. Don't worry love." He smiled. "We will make it work."
"You promise?" She asked. "I'm not going to get to school next week and you're going to have a sudden change of heart?"
"Not a chance. I'm done walking circles around this. I'm in it for the long haul Lyric, i'm not going anywhere." Lyric smiled.
"Good."
