Chapter 7: My Determination
"Is it official yet or not?"
"I don't know."
"It sounds pretty official to me."
"I don't know, Han."
The next few days had been an interesting, yet joyful.
Jinsol was on the last stretch for her film project.
There were just a few more days left for it to be ultimately done, and they were this close to finishing up all their filming. Jinsol and Kunhang were on the grind to meeting each other to wrap up filming. The girl couldn't be more thankful to the heavens that she met the most perfect actor for her project. Someone who had been so patient, understanding, and willing to her wishes. When will she ever meet someone like that again?
In a span of those three weeks of working on this important project, she also ended up falling for someone so unexpected.
Never would she thought that meeting Kunhang that day when she was so desperate could lead to this.
Even though the two of them were working on the project, it didn't seem like it. It just felt like a date to them. They met happily and ended the day satisfied with their work. Jinsol had to admit, what she recently filmed felt more real.
Jinsol wasn't sure where she and Kunhang stood in this relationship. They started because Jinsol wanted to move on from Taewoon, but she forgot him all too quickly. Was that rude of her to do? To dismiss the lovesick emotions she thought she still had with her sunbae? But, perhaps, she didn't realize that she already was falling for the Chinese boy.
This was for the best, wasn't it?
Now that she realized her feelings, she doesn't have to feel guilty any longer.
The last day of filming for her project had come. She decided a bar that her department friends recommended would be a nice place to film the conclusion to her story. The modern feel was brought from the neon lights and the interesting decor. The place was decently packed with young adults, who were here for the yummy food, alcohol, and music. The place felt perfect to film the aftermath scene of the breakup from the story.
Luckily for her, she had extras for her last scene, Haneul, Yangyang, and Dejun.
It was a nice ending scene, where old friends have a much needed reunion after a couple years. From there, the ex-couple meet again, spurring feelings that were felt when they first met. It would be simple and precise, that was what Jinsol wanted to convey as the conclusion of her series.
Currently, the five of them had a break and the two girls decided to head to the restroom. Thus, gave them the privacy for Haneul to spring up the question. It definitely threw Jinsol into a loop, but this was something only she could expect from her best friend.
"You surely came a looong way since I first met you, Kim Jinsol," Haneul sighed with a content look on her face. "My baby girl has a boyfriend now, a cute one that's going to be an idol! I wish that were me."
Jinsol bared a grin. Despite the younger's teasing nature, she couldn't help but feel giddy whenever she thinks of Kunhang. While everything about her relationship was amazing, there was one thing that did worry her that Haneul did mention.
"Oh please, won't it get too complicated once he becomes an idol... isn't it better to not be official?"
"Aish!" Haneul suddenly blew up. The echo of her voice earned a very shocked and worried glance from a random stranger that came out from one of the stalls. Haneul bid an apologetic glance the woman's way. The two waited as the lady washed her hands and left the bathroom, their private space back again. "Are you really going to be like that when the emotions you have for each other are that strong? Are you going to reject it if Kunhang brings up going official?"
"O-Of course not," Jinsol huffed out. "Don't get me wrong! I would love it if we were official! But I just want what's best for when he debuts, you know."
Haneul sighed, "Ah, what true love for you to worry about his future already."
"Oh shut it, this is serious."
"So am I!" Haneul reached over and grasped on Jinsol's shoulders. "I say this for the sake of your well-being. You deserve to be young and free, you know. Go date that boy you really like all you want! Don't miss an opportunity while you still have it! You have it in your hands so why are you already thinking negatively about it?"
Jinsol frowned. She could sense an underlying sadness in Haneul's tone. There was something definitely bothering her. "What's with you? You talk about this because you know."
A grimace crossed Haneul's face as she said that. Interest peaked within the older girl. "What is this? Was there something that happened before?"
"No, not at all!" Haneul uttered with a shake of her head. "Please, I'm just a sweet child who only had one true crush in her life which you know about."
"I don't think this is about your soon enough brother-in-law," Jinsol claimed, leaning closer to take in more Haneul's features. Now that she was cornering the girl, she was mor suspicious. "What the heck, Han. There must've been someone that really snatched you up, and you didn't tell me?"
Haneul looked defeated. She could merely shrug. "It was a whirlwind of events that lead to nothing. I don't think it was ever worth mentioning. It happened before I met you."
It wasn't that.
Jinsol knew it wasn't nothing.
Whoever this boy was that Haneul knew, she really liked him. And with that expression on her face as she admitted to this unknown story, she still does. As much as Jinsol wanted to press on and act who this boy was, she didn't want to bring up any painful memories for Haneul.
"How about you give some of the boys that confessed to you a chance next time?" Jinsol questioned the other to move on from the iffy subject. "You never know, they could eventually sweep you off your feet!"
Haneul clicked her tongue at the thought. "Oh please, those boys could only dream of it!"
Jinsol grinned as she succeeded in bringing up her mood.
And in that moment, she felt her phone ring in her pant's pocket. Curious to who it could be, she checked the screen. It was someone she had forgotten completely about these past few days. Haneul spotted the name and let out a groan.
"Don't you dare answer that call from Taewoon-sunbae," she hissed at Jinsol. "He is nothing to you now!" Jinsol watched as her phone stopped ringing, the first time she ever missed a call from her now ex-crush.
Haneul clapped her hands happily, this was the exact character development she wanted to see from her. "That's it! I knew you could do it!"
"You're being silly. Let's go back out before the boys start getting worried," Jinsol suggested. Just like that, the two of them exited the bathroom and returned back to the booth the boys were in.
Jinsol slid back into her seat next to Kunhang, returning the grin he gave her.
"It's really fascinating that the last time we've seen you, Jinsol, you two were just mere coworkers but now you're dating!" Yangyang chimed glancing back and forth between the couple. "I'm seriously happy for you two!"
"Yeah, thank you for returning this idiot's feelings," Dejun added with a smirk.
While Kunhang shot an obvious glare, Jinsol beamed at the comments. "Thanks. It really is interesting how we got here, hmm?"
"Oh please. He was very determined ever since he saw you the first time!" Yangyang replied. He leaned closer over the table. "Did you know we saw you way before you two actually met?"
This was news to Haneul and Jinsol. Kunhang had about enough of his two friends' at this point. "Alright! That's enough of that!" He sputtered, waving his hands as if casting a spell to stop this.
But the two girls were too interested. "When was the first time?" Haneul asked.
Dejun decided to take lead of the story, "I think this was the first time we ever went to Azalea's. We wanted something cold to drink after working out together at that one park. And so, when we went in, you were there, Jinsol."
"I was?" Jinsol uttered. She shouldn't be surprised by this, she frequents at Azalea's way too much for her health. Surely, milk tea replaced the blood in her veins at this point. "What was I doing?"
"You had your camera with you," Kunhang replied. "You were totally focused on it."
"That's just how Jinny is," Haneul murmured, shaking her head. "So engrossed in that thing that she would never notice cute guys walk in."
"It worked for the better." Jinsol glanced over at Kunhang for his comment. "Because if she noticed any of them before, I may not have had my chance." Jinsol's heart skipped a beat and she smacked his arm out of embarrassment. "To be the actor of your project, I meant!"
Ah... now Jinsol was even more embarrassed. The way Kunhang laughed, it was annoying, and she hated that she still thought it was cute. She gave him multiple smacks.
How dare he just put her heart in a frenzy like that?
"Wow! You really are something, Wong Kunhang," Jinsol hissed at him, puffing out her cheeks.
The Chinese boy beside her linked his arm with hers, his smile still so cute and bright. "You know, I'm kidding, right? I'm lucky to have met you when I did~"
"Aigoo, these two really rubbing it in that we're single," Haneul sighed.
The mood was high for the five young adults as the couple was being teased for their overly sweet exchange. In the midst of their laughter, Jinsol's phone began to ring. As it was set on the table, everyone could see who was calling... again. A cold expression crossed Kunhang's face when he saw it.
At that, Jinsol turned the phone down on the table, letting the call pass again. Kunhang peered at her with mild surprise. She merely grinned at him. This had to be proof enough that she moved on from her sunbae completely and she hoped that the fact had come across clearly.
However, her phone buzzed. Once, twice. It wasn't a call this time, but multiple messages coming in at once. A third buzz.
Jinsol gave a careful glance to Kunhang before she checked the screen. It was all messages from Taewoon.
It was odd. To have gotten two calls and these messages from her sunbae, she couldn't help but feel that something was wrong. Besides, it wasn't like Taewoon would message her for absolutely nothing.
"Just check what he might need," Kunhang murmured, a defeated look. "It could be important if he's trying to contact you so much."
"Sorry..." Jinsol went ahead and read the messages Taewoon had sent.
| Taewoon sunbae |
TW: jinsol I'm really sorry to bother you
but i'm worried about nari, idk where she is
She hasn't talked to me since earlier
and she won't tell me where she is
if you know where she is, pls tell me
I asked others too, and they dont know..
I'm just concerned. :(
"I don't mean to be a bringer of bad news but, is that Nari right over there?" Haneul suddenly pointed out. Jinsol picked up her gaze from the screen and looked over to where she was pointing towards. There, she recognized the familiar, currently-pink head of her sunbae.
Nari looked miserable, downing shot after shot of soju. And seeing that she was alone at the table with more than one of that green bottle, something must have horribly upset her.
Did... Taewoon do something that made Nari that way?
"Jinny, what are you doing?"
It didn't process to Jinsol that she stood up from the booth. As it was obvious Nari hated her, Jinsol couldn't bring herself to hate her back. All she wanted to do was to help out in any way she can.
"I'm going to talk to her," Jinsol uttered.
"Are you serious?" Haneul huffed, her eyebrows furrowed. "She's a bitch."
"She's still my senior... and Taewoon was actually looking for her." Jinsol pressed her lips as the stares of the four were onto her. "As a junior from the same department, I should try to do something. I'll be back, okay?" She slipped out from the booth and carefully walked over to the mess of a girl. Now that she was closer, Jinsol could see her bloodshot eyes and her tear stained cheeks. What happened to her?
Jinsol never saw Nari so vulnerable.
Just as she reached the table, Nari met her eyes. And the moment she realized, she slammed down the shot glass she had in her hand, hitting it down on the table with a loud clank. Jinsol flinched at the sound but didn't waver, not even when she was given the most nasty glare.
"Oho, it's Kim Jinsol," the pink-haired woman sneered. There was a slowness to her voice. Jinsol could tell she was drunk. Nari tucked a loose strand of hair behind her hair and pointed at her in a furious manner. "You are the last person I want to see!" Jinsol opened her mouth to tell her about Taewoon but Nari beat her to it. "Ahh, what's this? You got him wrapped around your finger already, huh?"
Jinsop turned and spotted Kunhang glowering furiously from their booth. He looked ready to hop right out and storm over to them. Jinsol gave him a look and mouthed that she was fine to him. The dark look on his face didn't falter but he merely nodded, sliding back into the booth. Jinsol made sure to give Haneul, Dejun, and Yangyang an appreciative glance, before she forced herself to take the seat in front of Nari.
With a sigh, Jinsol told her, "Taewoon-sunbae is looking for you."
"I take back my earlier comment, he's the last person I want to see right now!" Nari snarled under her breath while she tried to get the soju bottle. Jinsol managed to grasp it first and poured a small amount for her before the older could explode at her. "At least you have respect, hmph." Nari downed the shot.
Jinsol's assumption was right. Taewoon and Nari must've argued.
"What did sunbae do?" Jinsol carefully asked. "He's worried sick about you."
"Worried sick about me? I have to laugh!" Nari looked absolutely insane. She was forcing herself to smile through her tears. Jinsol grew concerned watching her act this way. "Bastard doesn't care about me. If he did, he would know about my feelings. Oblivious fool."
"He's your boyfriend though. He should be more aware of your feelings..."
"Boyfriend? Sure, a friend who's a boy." Jinsol narrowed her eyes, staring at Nari in confusion. The older cracked a strained smile. "I guess I should apologize for keeping up with the dumb charade. Taewoon and I never dated, and probably never will." A snort of drunken laughter came out her lips after her confession.
Jinsol didn't want to believe what she said. Was the alcohol talking right now, making her spew out such nonsense?
"You dummy. To really think we were dating," Nari scoffed. "It's not like Taewoon confirmed that shit. I lied to you and you were naive enough to believe it!"
"Why... would you even lie about that?"
"Because I knew you liked him too, that's why."
Jinsol bit down on her lip, unsure on what to say next. This was far more than what to expect from this conversation. She was anticipating some love drama between her two seniors, but now she was being told that they weren't even a thing? And the fact that Nari lied to her about their relationship just to get her riled up?
It was vile.
It left a sour taste in Jinsol's mouth.
She had felt horribly guilty the past month because of her adoration for a taken man.
But none of it was real.
Jinsol's blood was boiling.
"Sunbae, that was terrible of you to do, you know that?"
"Oh, I know." Nari's glazed eyes drifted over to one of the many neon lights of the bar. A heavy breath left her lips. "I am soooo bad, right? Right."
"Seriously, why do you hate me so much? I can't think of a single thing I did wrong for you to hate me," Jinsol muttered, her brows knitted together from frustration. "If there's anything I did, then tell me!"
"Just seeing you agitates me, Kim Jinsol. There's nothing more to it," Nari scoffed. "How you're Kim Jinsol who everyone just ends up worshipping and liking from the get-go because she has a Youtube channel with a following. How you're Kim Jinsol who's only a fucking sophomore but somehow got herself into an advanced class when freshmen and sophomores shouldn't be. How you're Kim Jinsol, who always seems to work your ass off when you know damn well you could easily get into the business because of your sister."
My... sister.
"I just hate it and everything about you," she continued, her fist thunking at the table. "Just watching you present your videos, your amazing videos that barely get any criticism, it burns this rage within me... and I hate myself more. I look at my own works and think they're crap! I've had so much experience that surely would help me, but I still get shit on for my works. And it surely doesn't help that Taewoon-oppa dotes on you!"
Jinsol was speechless.
Was this Nari's true feelings, now?
Was it mere jealousy that lead her to hate Jinsol?
"Sunbae, you make such wonderful content."
"That's bullshit, Jinsol."
"I'm being serious too. There's a style to your filming that I really admire. It's something truly special when you watch someone's work and they know it's yours. I never stuck to one style, I'm always shooting different things, that people would think it's filmed by different people. But your works, it's yours and that's what makes it stand out so much from everyone else's," Jinsol told her. She didn't dare to look up at Nari, she was far too shy to do so. "I've said this before during student evaluations too, I was being genuine about my comments. Just because our works differ in style, doesn't make one or the other better. Different people have different styles, and it doesn't make anyone more superior. You have a lot of people that enjoy your works too."
Pressing her lips clamped shut, Jinsol went ahead and poured more of the soju into Nari's cup. The older girl stared at her quietly. Jinsol breathed out, "I don't want to get things easily, sunbae. My sister, she's kind and helpful but I want to show my worth through my own efforts. That's why I work hard. I don't want to be in anyone's debt to reach my goals. If I let someone hold my hand the whole way, then do I really deserve to be there?"
Nari let out a scoff, before taking the shot Jinsol had poured. "I guess we have one similarity."
A weight seemed to have lifted both of the girls' shoulders. Jinsol felt that this was a good turning point. Hopefully, she'll be able to approach Nari differently from this day on.
She will, if she wanted this big misunderstanding to disappear between them.
"Kim Jinsol." The very girl peered up at her senior. Nari waggled her finger at her, her eyes narrowed. "Liking Taewoon-sunbae will only lead to heartbreak. I've known him for two years and not once did he know my feelings for him no matter how obvious I make it. And now he just goes on and on about that tea lady..."
"Tea lady?" Jinsol blinked. "You mean Mira-sshi?"
"Yeah, the manager to Azalea's. Taewoon is completely infatuated with her, it makes me sick." Nari snatched the green bottle from Jinsol's hands and downed the rest of the liquid from inside. "Taewoon-oppa, that idiot!"
After a few more minutes of Nari spewing insults and curses to their sunbae, her head smacked down onto the table, and she laid there asleep. Jinsol jolted in shock. Nari must've reached her limits for tonight. With that, Jinsol quickly sent a message to Taewoon about their location and he should hurry over.
Luckily, he wasn't too far from the bar.
"Jinsol." Kunhang appeared by the table, a worried expression in his face when he noticed the unconscious Nari. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything is fine. More than fine actually, weirdly enough," Jinsol told him. "Taewoon-sunbae should be here soon to pick her up." There was a shift in his expression the moment she said the particular name.
"Min Nari!" With the sound of heavy, rapid steps, the very man, Taewoon, rushed over to them. Jinsol and Kunhang stepped aside as he went over to the sleeping girl. "How much did this girl drink? Goodness, why did she drink so much by herself?" Jinsol could see it. Taewoon looked deathly concerned about Nari. Nari may not have seen it, but there were more than enough reasons why Jinsol believed in the fake relationship so easily. "Jinsol, seriously, thank you so so much! I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't find her."
Taewoon rested a hand on Nari's head, patting her. He must be so relieved now that he found her. He then tried to wake her up, earning a very displeased groan to leave Nari's lips. "Let's bring you back home, Nari. C'mon." Taewoon wrapped one of her arms around his shoulders, and did his best to support her weight.
"Please bring her home safely, sunbae," Jinsol told him with a small smile.
With one nod, Taewoon and Nari left the bar.
Jinsol glanced over at Kunhang, "I know it must be upsetting to see him."
"A little bit..."
Jinsol knew Kunhang was holding it in. While she did show her joy and adoration on their few days of dating, she never really voiced how she truly felt to Kunhang. They started their dates because she had been upset over her crush on Taewoon. Kunhang could still think it's like that.
Just take Nari and Taewoon. Nari had been beside Taewoon's side for two years. She said she made herself obvious in showing her love for him but he never caught on.
One needs to always say what's in their mind.
Jinsol reached over and grasped his hand in hers. "You know, Taewoon is still my senior. I shouldn't ignore him." With a sigh, she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "It's not because I like him. I like you, dummy. So you should stop being upset whenever."
Finally, a smile appeared on his face. "Oh, you like me?" He asked in a teasing tone.
"Shut it, we're dating already, aren't we?"
"That makes me happy. Really," Kunhang replied. He removed his hand from her grip only to intertwine their fingers again. "Let's get back to work, then?"
"Let's."
A/n:
I want to say I'm seeing the end but there'll still be a couple of surprises coming up! Please anticipate it, everyone~
Please do leave a comment or two on your thoughts on the story! I would truly appreciate it. ❤️
