22 - Station G

Looking at the english station with great interest, Carlos suggested:

     "Shall we go there?"

     Ernani sentiu um arrepio:

"I don't think so! There is a risk of collapse."

     Patrícia agreed:

"I agree! I don't think we should go."

     Ernani was even more emphatic:

"It's not just the storm. That place is creepy! The site has been abandoned for years, but it's as if it never was. There are still several traces of its occupants!"

"Ah, I'm going now for sure! I got curious."

Patrícia didn't hesitate to accompany her lover. Ernani, somewhat begrudgingly, decided to follow them. Deep down, Carlos had a hidden interest, which Patrícia suspected was the 'order' from the 'collector'. Only that could justify his insistence on going to that abandoned station. On the way, Carlos asked:

"And how did the English people die?"

"I don't know for sure, it seems to have been because of a landslide. The Brazilian had a heart attack. I'm telling you. There's some evil force here!"

"All nonsense! People die everywhere, all the time", said Carlos.

They walked with difficulty, sometimes on loose stones, sometimes on snow. When they finally arrived at the English base, the famous G base or Fitz base, it was already windy, indicating that the storm was getting closer. The place was really gloomy, with misaligned doors and jammed windows; the light didn't come in; the wooden floor creaked and reminded them of a dark horror movie. There were objects everywhere, like abandoned boots in one room; a wooden toilet seat in another; cans of food, with cookies, fat and preserves, scattered around. But there was nothing more ghostly than the library and its bookshelves. They were the books, swollen by the action of the water, which during the summer dripped through the ceiling. Ernani warned:

"Don't touch them! The pages come apart very easily."

Carlos seemed to be looking for something, but Ernani, so tense, didn't notice. However, Patrícia did. He made some kind of mental association until he came to a book on one of the shelves. It seemed to her that he had pretended to have found a certain book by chance. He said:

"A crime novel! Who would have thought..."

Without Ernani realizing it, but under Patrícia's watchful eye, Carlos took out a plastic package with a pressure seal from inside the book. There was yellow paper inside the package. Carlos quickly put it in his pocket and handed the book to Patrícia, so that she could distract Ernani. She was surprised:

"Nice! Agatha Christie! The station is English, which is to be expected. Death Comes as The End, written in 1945. And the edition is from 1960. Amazing!"

Ernani, who had once again turned his attention to the two lovers, finished:

"This place is haunted! Let's get out of here now!"

Providentially, a strange noise diverted Ernani's attention, making him even less aware of Carlos' secret motives for being there. Patrícia, however, didn't hold back and asked:

"What have you got there, Carlos?"

"Shh! Quiet", he said, placing his index finger on her lips. He determined: "Not even a word about it!"

She understood what he was talking about and agreed to the request for silence. Meanwhile, Ernani was checking a window to see if the noise they had heard had come from it. The wind was howling outside.

Carlos put the book back. That's when the door to the library room, adjacent to the entrance to Fitz's base, slammed, followed by a creak in the floorboards. Was someone spying on them? Patrícia opened the door to the other side and saw no one. They searched the station and nothing! Not a trace! Ernani was terrified:

     "For God's sake! Let's go!"

"It was just the wind", clarified Carlos.

"What about the noise in the floorboards, Carlos?" asked Patrícia.

"Pat... It looks like contraction in the wooden planks, Ema." He was almost going to say the wrong name, even though it was the right one.

Patrícia, sarcastically, didn't miss the chance to frighten the meteorologist even more:

"That's what they said in Hydesville, in the United States, in 1848, when sisters Kate and Margareth Fox began to hear sounds like this inside their house. As time went by, we came to the conclusion that it was actually the spirit of a man who wanted to tell us that he had been murdered in that house with a butcher's knife, and that his body was buried in the cellar. And indeed, the body was found there afterwards!"

Ernani almost had a heart attack. He snapped, affected:

"That's enough! I don't want to hear another word! Let's go now!"

They left quickly, with Ernani leading the way, strides wide and firm, guiding the entourage. It was already snowing! Reaching Ferraz Station as quickly as possible was the best thing they could do.
