Episode 1.... Getting To Know You

Uzi, V, and myself waited in front of the I.R.U, awaiting news of the poor kid's condition in an uncomfortable silence. I paced back and forth in front of the two as I rubbed my hands together worriedly-asking myself if we were too late when one of the medical drones came out of the room. V and Uzi stood up as I approached the doctor and asked, "Well? How is she?" "You're VERY lucky to have found her when you did. Her circuits were almost fried when you brought her to us, and we had to undergo multiple heating sessions before she finally came back to us." ""Came back"? So, she's awake?" V asked, adjusting her glasses to fit over her visor. She came a loooooonnnnggg way since becoming a disassembly Drone; even going as far as to be a teacher for the more elementary worker drones as well as taking on a kinder, softer approach. "Awake as awake can be, but I must warn you before I let you see her that she seems rather confused, and VERY frightened. I suspect the ice gave her a memory malfunction!" "So the kid's got NO recollection of what happened before we found her? Sounds like someone was up to no good to me." Uzi scoffed, shaking her head. "Well, we'll try to get as much info from her as we can, and we'll see where it goes from there. Agreed?" I asked, panning my view between the two ladies. "Agreed." Uzi replied, standing tall and firm like always, which only left V as I turned my head to her. "I didn't know I was a part of this, but fine. I'll try to take note what she says." She sighed, and the doctor gave an affirming nod before opening the door to let us through. As he had said, the child sat wide awake, looking around traumatically with big, sky blue eyes. Now that we were able to observe her more clearly, we saw that her royal blue hair had bangs that parted left before flaring out, and the rest was pulled back into a ponytail ending with a braid that trailed down her back. Her metalic skin wasn't like any other worker Drone we knew or saw, for her's was a fine, gray color, and she had no helmet like them- only a pink bow tacked into her hair. Her eyes grew wide when she saw us enter, and she seemingly asked in a tiny voice, "Cá bhfuil mé? Cé tusa?" We knew it was a foreign language, and we had no problems with trying to understand them as part of our programming as I replied gently, "Hey there! I'm N. This here is my wife Uzi, and my friend V! Who might you be?" "Níl a fhios agam cé mé, ach go raibh sé dorcha agus dhúisigh mé suas anseo." She replied as I said, "O-Oh.... That's... Quite a long name. S-Seems pretty though." I approached the kid closer, and as soon I was about three feet from her, she did something that caught the three of us completely off gaurd! She had grabbed my hand softly at first, then tightened her grip on me before yanking me down harshly as I screamed and begged for help. She placed her first two fingers to the side of my head, and something showed up on her visor but I couldn't see because my head was pressed firmly into the mattress of the I.R.U bed. Panicked, Uzi began to fight the child's grip on me as V readied a blaster gun on her right hand, and aimed it at the kid! I tried to stop V before she ended up getting the kid killed, and Uzi finally freed me from the kid's grasp as a recording of my screams of shock and terrified confusion began to play from the child. I ran over, and pushed V's arm down as Uzi remained a safe distance from the kid, and on her visor flashed the words "Language Download In Process". We waited for about fifteen minutes until the bar beneath the words was completely filled, and the child came to once again as she shook her head, and said in English, "Hi!" We all jumped back as she passed off confused glances to each of us, then she suddenly realized what the commotion was as she chirped in an odd accent, "Oooooohhhh.... Sorry about all that- your Language calibration seems to be a bit banjaxed." "Huh?" "Broken. I was saying a response to your question, but you didn't understand." She replied, swinging her feet off the side of the bed. Looking down, she furrowed her brow as she lifted up one of her feet to observe, and said disgruntledly, "Where are my boots?" We were still frozen in shock as we looked towards each other, and I began hesitantly, "Y-You were outside in the cold.... My wife and I brought you inside to get you warm before you froze to death!" "Really? I knew I was outside, but I didn't realize it was for THAT long. Where did you find me?" "At the left wing of the colony wall buried in snow? Who ARE you?" Uzi asked, daring to come closer to the mysterious girl. She thought about it for a moment before shrugging her shoulders, and replied simply, "My papa didn't give me one, so I don't know who I am." "W-Wait, your "Papa"?" "My dad, yes. I called him papa. He never gave me a name, but he told me that he had to leave me..." at this her voice trailed off, and a sad look crossed her face as she looked down at her knees. "Are you.... A-Are you okay?" V asked, feeling bad for the kid as her hand returned to normal, and the kid looked back up to us as she shook her head no. I sat with her on the bed as I asked, "You wanna tell us what happened to your papa?" "There's nothing I can really tell you other than he was dying, and so he had to leave me so that he could die elsewhere..." she replied sadly. Hearing this made me ask more questions than I could hope to answer as I pondered why a father would leave his child to go die. Was it to shield her from the trauma? The pain? Wouldn't he have liked to spend his final moments with her? "Where did you and your papa live?" Uzi asked, scratching her head in thought. "We didn't live here... In fact, I never knew "here" existed until I read a note papa left, and followed a map to this place! I guess the cold got to me before I could find the front door..." the girl said, making us all perk up as we asked in unison "A map?" "Yes, it was a map of the planet's locations, and circled in big, red marker, I was instructed to come here. I had nothing left at home, and I was getting pretty lonely, so I decided that I'd follow the map here." She replied, shuffling to get comfortable. "So to recap," V began, leaning against the wall, "your father is dead somewhere, you're left alone with no identification, and you followed these random instructions he left you to find this place?" "Tá! Exactly right!" She replied with a nod. The three of us exchanged worried glances, and Uzi asked curiously as she scratched her head, "Well, what about your mom? Where is she?" The girl shook her head as she replied, "It's just me now. My Mhamaí died after I was born, and now my Papa is gone too." Hearing this, an idea crossed my mind, and I stood up from the bed before asking Uzi to come into the hall with me. Concerned, and confused, she asked, "N, honey, What's this about?" "It's about the kid, Uzi. She has nobody left!" "Yeeeeaaaaahhhh?" "And we can't have any kids because of what happened with Cyn and the Solver." "Yeeeeaaaaahhhh? Annnnnd?" She asked. Hoping she would get the hint, I stayed silent for a moment, and as I predicted she began once again, "N, do you REALLY think they're just going to give us this kid given our past?" "Why WOULDN'T they? We've proven ourselves long enough, and came far since then, so they can't possibly be mad at us still for that whole debacle." I persuaded, taking her hands in mine, and intwining our fingers. "I-I don't know, N..." Uzi replied, looking away sadly; knowing why I took her chin in my hands and lifted her gaze back up at me as I softly smiled. I knew she wanted a kid more than I did, and she was devastated to hear she couldn't bear any herself. It was the perfect opportunity! I displayed the word "Please?" on my visor, and she sighed as she replied, "Ooooh, alright.... Fine..... Bite me...." excited, I walked with her back into the room where the doctor was doing further examinations to ensure the kid was in perfect health when I cleared my throat to get his attention. V, the doctor, and the girl all looked our way as I blurted, "We're claiming this kid!" leaving all three stunned. "Wait.... You want ME? REALLY?" The girl asked, beginning to bounce in place happily. "Sure kid," Uzi replied, kneeling down on one knee as she continued, "now and forever." Overjoyed, the little girl leapt from the bed to run into Uzi's arms, and embraced her tightly as she cheered, "Yay! I'm not the only one anymore!" This made V choke up slightly-even my own core melted at how happy the girl was as Uzi held her. The mood was interrupted by a disapproving cough, and our attention fell back onto the doctors stoic face as he inquired, "And WHY would I just let you have this child?" "B-Because..... Ummmmm..... Because-" "Because we found her first?" Uzi replied quickly, winking at me before looking back at the doctor. The doctor thought for a moment about the claim before answering, "Welllllll..... That IS true...... Alright, she's in your hands now!" "YES! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!" I exclaimed happily, taking the doctor into my arms and spinning with him until Uzi signaled for me to stop. I collected myself, and gently set the doctor back onto the floor as I replied awkwardly, "Th-Thank you...." and quickly ran back to Uzi's side. The doctor dusted himself off, and fixed his glasses before continuing, "Yes, well... There's still a matter we need to discuss before you leave." "Which is-?" "Her name. What do I put her down as so I can register her into the colony system?" "Yeah, what are you two gonna name her?" V asked, leaving the wall she was leaning against to stand by the doctor. I looked at Uzi to see if she had any ideas, to which she simply shrugged as her visor displayed a question mark. Looking at the child's appearance again, I thought long and hard for a suitable name that not only described her, but her personality as well. She was spunky, kind, lively, and the only name that came to mind as I opened my mouth was, "Gambit...." "Pardon?" The doctor asked, getting his pen ready to sign the observation document. "Gambit. That's what we'd like to name her." I repeated, loud enough for him to hear. "Gambit? Really?" Uzi asked, contorting her face in confusion as V chimed, "Hey, it could be worse, given N's history with naming things." "Hey! There was NOTHING wrong about the name I gave that turtle!" I cried in defense, making V hold her hand up dismissively, and making Uzi laugh as I pouted. "I like it. "Gambit"." The kid replied, and coming to a unanimous decision, the doctor wrote the name as he said, "Gambit Doorman.... I'll get her registered in the system right away. In the mean time, you all take care, and watch that one!" "We will, thank you doc!" Uzi said, setting Gambit down as V and I thanked him as well. "WAIT!" Gambit yelled, catching us all off gaurd as I panicked, "WHAT!? WHAT IS IT!?" "Getting a new family is nice and all, but one question still remains." "And that is-?" Gambit looked down at her feet before looking back up at us, and she asked once again, "Where are my boots?"
