Chapter 7: From V.W

I looked at my journal for hours, the soft creaking of wood, and the chattering cold biting the windows.

I hear a soft knock on my door. Who would be up at this hour, well, they must be thinking the same thing.

I open the door trying to look half asleep, instead of wide eyes and curious.

David.

He looked at me and met me in the eye, a blank look on his face. "Whats up?" I ask, my voice was awkward and high.

"I'm sorry" I looked at him, an unforgiving, hot, bad boy was saying sorry to me. But for what?

"What do you mean?" I ask again.

He laughs, it was sad and hollow. It sounded like a cry to humanity, a cry trying to escape but is being held back.

"I was a half-ass dick to you, you were only trying to help" I look taken back.
"I intruded, truly there is no reason to be sorry, I'm sorry, I-" He stops me by placing a hand in front of my face.

"No" A smile works. He pulls me to his face, meeting his eyes, they are full of sorrow not even the brightest light would shine in the depths.

"I was wrong, I got angry, I only let those close to me" The space between us was slowly closing. "Know what's going on, and how I'm feeling" I felt his hot breath on my neck.

"I know that, I'm not the best person, but, you can make me better." The words linger as his lips become millimetres away from mine. My mind races in the moment not knowing what to do.

But I can't pull away when a soft tender kiss is planted on my lips. He was sweet, his lips like a sugary white wine. I was desperate, surprised and caught in the moment. He pulled away slowly, his hands on my face. But I pull him closer, this time I'm hungry. A strong kiss now takes the sweet one's place. Like a soft fire, now crackling with heat.

This felt like my first real kiss.

I had kissed many times before. But now it felt real. Not like a one night stand or a hook- up. I did not know why we had kissed. The reality had caught up to me. I pulled away feeling his eyes on me. It burned, the feeling I was having. This was wrong.

"Oh sorry, I've got to go to be, um, goodnight, David." The sentence carelessly fell out in a jumble of words. They felt cut up and misplaced. He smiled shyly as if embarrassed. Then he left. The reality was, his ex-girlfriend just was murdered, then he kisses me after lashing out. Right when I found the clues. Things were lining up, I did not know it yet. The feeling in my chest felt like fire, it burned a hole through my heart.

A very dark thought popped into my head but it could be true, right? What if I could use him. Get close to him and make him tell me everything he knows.

There are so many dark secrets in David's head. I needed to know what would happen, because what if someone else dies next. I need to know that it's not just a feeling, I need to know who David Love is.

Yet I still have so many questions. In my journal I write a few words.

Get close to him: what does he already know?

That night it was hard to sleep. The misty feeling of someone watching hung in the air. My mind still had so many questions. But one I needed answers to. Who is V.W and who is G?

There were only two people in the school I could think of with the initials V.W In the morning before class I decided to hunt them down. I brushed off last night's discoveries and my encounter with David.

My hair was curled and bouncy.

"Hey girl!" It was the wonderful voice of Day. I smiled as I saw her slip inside my room from the mirror's reflection. Her hair was curled and braided into a bun. She put a hand on my shoulder.

"How are you doing, from the night, when you, you know, and what happened, you know." She repeated this under her breath. She was as confused as I was.

"Day, I found something-'' I stopped. David's words hit me. You can't trust anyone here.

"What Danny?" She sat on the floor looking through my stack of school books and papers.

"Oh nevermind, I just found an old dress from my mom." She giggled.

"Oh god, must be ugly as hell, the 80's are in the past Danny." I smile with her. Spoken truly. I could trust Day, right, but then why did I not tell her about what I found. Why?

Another stupid question.

Another Why?

I wanted to bang my head on the wall. So many questions. I felt very cold all of the sudden. I reached out to Day and I took her hand. I could trust her.

I could trust her. I breathed these words to myself. Trying to believe them. Then it clicked. I could trust her. It was true, nothing led back to her, it all led back to someone else, no one else. BUt nothing was connected to Day.

"I lied to you-" The words rushed out. "I found things I'm trying to figure out, I went into Vi's room and I found notes and secrets." I sputtered, "But I just need to tell someone about it, sorry."

She looked angry just for a moment.

"It's okay, what did you find?" She stretched out the word. Her face was curious and she looked interested in the subject. I was glad I could finally talk to someone.

I showed her everything in my journal. But I left a few pages out. Some secrets I believe no even Day could bear, or I didn't show her because of the wrong feeling I had when my fingers brushed against the pages of my notebook.

I never showed her the location, or that Vi was having a child. I hid most of my notes. But there was one thing that scared her. Tears formed in her eyes. I did not know why. But she brushed them away.

This happened when I showed her the photograph. You know what you did.

"Daisy" I say quickly. "You okay?" She looked very shaken up.

She nodded slowly.

"It's just, who would set a house on fire like that." Anger curled around her voice. She sounded emotional.

"Do you know what this is?" The anger dimmed in her eyes and she shook her head.

"I have no idea."

"Okay, um, why don't we head downstairs, get some food?" She followed me out of the room. A stoned expression on her face.

"Hey, really are you okay." I ask again suddenly.Says eyes flashed to mine. She quickly nodded her head.

"I'm not hungry right now, I'll catch up to you later" I keep walking as she turns into her own room, the door slamming shut before I can say goodbye.

My mind spins as I chew on a bowl of cereal. V.W.

Viviann Wells, a second year I met at a party, or it could be from a boy, what about Victor Wilson? But it could also be Vicky Walker. I stopped eating and stood up.I had just found another piece to the puzzle. What if Vi, was sending the letter, but died before she could give it to well, whoever G was.

My pen flew across the page as I jotted down my discovery. Now I needed the other half. G.

G, who's name starts with G, that Miss. Walker was connected to? The names raced around in my head like race cars. But who would end up first. The Bell rang from the old bell tower in the west section of the school. Damn.

I would be lucky if I was five minutes late. My fingers closed around my door handle.

Genevieve.

Her best friend, of course. Wait, Genevieve was in my first class and I could talk to her then. My feet pounded on the cobblestone walkways while I ran to class. Mr. E looked at me coming into the door. I smiled and gave him a small wave. Then The bell rang. So, I was not late. That's great!

My desk rattled as I set down my book. I purposely sat next to Genevieve. Her long black hair was curled up into a bun. Dark eye shadow coated her lids. A baggy pair of black sweatpants hung on her skinny legs. Her Black hoodie read, #Vi-lives-on. I smiled at this. She was still young and was hunting. I tucked my hand into my pocket where I felt the letter, the torn edges of the paper.

Mr. E started to talk about the Colorado mountains. I took this time to nudge Genevieve in the shoulder.

"Hey, Genevieve I'm really sorry about what happened, I know you two were close." She sniffled at that.

"It's okay, I'm sorry you had to see her like that." I nod. I don't want to tell Genevieve about everything. But I need to tell her something, or else, she won't tell me anything.

"Look, I know that what happened to Vi was wrong, but I know that someone did that to her, I want to find out who." I shudder. I might have said too much.

She looked at me. A smile lingered on her face. "Whoever killed her can burn in hell." Her voice was small and soft.

"Do you know who would be angry, or had a motive to possibly, you know, hurt her?"

She glared across the room. Her eyes burned.

"I can't tell you know, or, they will come for you to stay on their good side."

"Also, umm." I paused hoping to god for a good answer. "Did Vi ever call you by the name of, well, just the letter G?" Her eyes went wide and big. A small nod caught my eyes. Her pale face got even more pale. It looked thin, and paper white.

"Did she ever leave your location to a place on Morningstar grounds?"

She put a shaking hand to her chest. Her eyes had not shut, they stayed staring into the distance.

"I need my pills." Her hands rummaged through her bag, but came out empty handed.

Her hand flew up in the air.

"Mr. E! I think I'm gonna be sick!" He nodded to her as she ran out of the classroom.

I look after her worriedly.

After class I looked around but could not find her. I gave up. But what she said still hung in my ear, a whisper right next to me. 'or, they will come for you, stay on their good side.'

Who was they, is it one person or two, possibly a group?

But when her eyes went wide. It was as if she knew something. She knew about the location. I needed to find her. I ran to Metha house and ran into Daisy.

"Whoa, Danny, what's the rush?" I gasped and placed a hand on Day's shoulder.

"I need to find Gen, you know, Genevieve, she knows something, she can help me find Vi's killer, it's another clue." She looked at me with a funny smile.

"Can you help?" I asked her looking around the campus for Gen. "She said she needed her pills."

"Oh, sorry I can't, I have math and, well yeah, sorry." She hurried off. The Second floor of Metha house was painted a dark green and had windows painted a cream color. I glanced at Vi's door. It still had the 'WARNING' sign on it.

Genevieve was right across from Vi's, a whiteboard read "Study Life!"

My hand knocked on the door. I waited for a while hoping to hear her awake from a nap, or the shake of a pill bottle being set down. I noticed the key hole was turned to the right, it was unlocked. I brushed my hair aside and slowly turned the door handle.

Genevieve's room was nice, the same color as mine but had hanging plants all over and a bright pink comforter. Her computer was still on, I drifted my fingers along her desk then sat in her chair. I was snooping again, I needed to stop doing this.

The tab was open to: Maps of Morningstar Academy.

I looked around the room finding a printed sheet of paper with a blueprint, or map to Morningstar. It matched the one on her computer.

She knows something, this map could help me.

I pull out my phone and take a quick photo of the map, which I could later print out for myself.

Faint footsteps lingered on the stairwell while I hurried out of the room.

"Oh, hey, excuse me!" A happy voice called out.

I turned to face a tall boy no older than me with flown blond hair and smiling green eyes.

"Hi!" I greeted him, hoping those bright eyes had not seen me sneaking out of Gen's room.

"Hi, I'm Conan Halls, I just transferred here from Brazil." His tan skin radiated in the dark room. Although I detected no accent of any kind. "American born though, I'm looking for Mrs. Blue."

I nod and take him to Blue's room.

"So what year are you in, oh, I'm Danny Belle by the way." He smiled.

"I'm in my first year, you?"

"Same." He knocked on Blue's door as I left him standing in the doorway. My mind spun after the interaction. I had acted so natural. I guess talking to a new student, a boy, was one of my little worries that I had. I had crushed that!

He was a forbidden, kind of, Vi would have liked him.

A cracking noise comes through the windows and the halls. The announcements have made their way to Metha House.

"Students of Morningstar, these past weeks have been hard, and sadly we have lost one of our own, Vicky Walker was an amazing student and the life of Morningstar"

I hear a few cries from down the hall. My mind places the picture of her dead body right in front of me. The announcements continue.

"To honor Miss. Walker, the students and council, along with some friends have put together a memorial to celebrate Vicky's life and time at school." I turn and see Conan's confused face. I give him a smile and a shrug. Blue snaps him back to attention.

"Vicky's death was not an accident as many of us believe and an Investigation is being held at school currently, so the authorities have decided that it is best to evacuate the school to continue the investigation. So you all will be going home, you will also continue the year after one week of break."

I looked at Blue and she was sadly nodding in my direction. I run down the hall and burst into my room. I collect all of my papers and shove them under my bed angrily.

No, they have the chance to look at it all, and I don't, I'm stuck with what I have.

"Tonight please come to the circle garden to celebrate Vicky walker on your last day before the investigation takes place, please then pack your bags and get ready to leave in the morning." I slam my fist on the wall. An utter silence falls, the crackle falls and descends. Day knocks on my door and pops her head in.

"Hey whats up, sorry about us needing to leave, I know you wanted to solve her murder."

I smile a bit. The familiar crackle booms, a voice comes on the air again.

"Students of Morningstar, Danny, Daisy, David, Genevieve, Conan, please come to the office to consult about a selection of students staying who were involved in the case." It was Mr. E's voice. I smiled. Day grumbled.

"What's that about." She plastered a smile on her face.

"Oh, just kinda wanted to see my parents." she walked out of the room without saying a word.

I flopped on my bed with a smile on my face.

"Just my luck." My breathless whispers floating in the wind. Then The alarm blares just as I hear a scream.
