Chapter 5: Murder at Morningstar
I stared at Vi's body for a bit. Soon enough I backed up and slumped down the wall by Kiki.
"What happened?" I ask breathless.
"The other day she told me to meet her here, she said she had done something stupid and that she made a mistake." Kiki closed her eyes and took a long, deep breath.
"She said that she found him, I didn't know what she was talking about." Kiki twirled her wavy hair in one finger.
"Vi, sorry, it's just, she said that someone needed to know just in case." Kiki stopped tears welling up in her eyes.
"I came Danny, I came, and she was dead!" Kiki drew a circle and the dirt.
"Dead" Her voice was breaking.
"Kiki, it's gonna be okay, but I need you to listen closely." I ran through every possibility in my head.
"When the police come you will need to say you were going to talk to her at your hang out, understand, you can't tell them any of what we talked about." Kiki noded.
"Come on, follow me, back to Metha, I'm going to tell Day, then we're gonna tell Blue."
We climbed out of the underground grave and saw splashes of morning light faintly seeping into the sky overhead.
I opened up the Metha house door. Kiki followed me up the stairs and straight to Daisy's door. I told Kiki to wait in my room. I had just discovered a dead body, but I was calm, as if this happened more than often.
I held up my fist but pulled it back. Instead, like the amazing friend I am, I bust open the door.
I see Daisy in bed on top of Ben making out.
I quickly cover my eyes and shut the door.
"What the hell?" Ben says.
"You, shut up." I gesture for Daisy to come towards me.
I peek through a slit in my fingers and see Daisy glaring at me.
"What is it?" I shake a bit.
"Vi is dead." It was as simple as those three words that claimed the loss of a life.
Daisy put her hands to her mouth. I nodded.
Ben looked at the both of us and said "Wait really?" I glare at him as if to say.
Shut up moron.
"Ben, you're going to act like you heard nothing, understand." He nods.
"Now get out!" I harshly whisper.
He scurry's toward the door giving Day a kiss to the cheek.
"When the police come you say nothing, I will fill out in later." She nods.
"But what happened, where is she, I mean wait what?" She was lost and confused.
I tell her about what me and Kiki were about to do, then I leave. I trusted her with this, I knew I could.
I walk to the end of the Hall with Kiki.
She knocks on Blues door. After a few moments sleepy Blue answers the door.
"Whats up girls?" She asks in an annoyed tone. Kiki sniffles a bit then spits out the words weighing her down.
"Vi is dead." Blues eyes go wide.
"Follow me." She grabs both of our hands then tugs us downstairs. We wait on the couch side by side. Blue makes many calls. Slowly as the commotion of buttons being pressed and phones ringing. Students begin to trickle down.
Soon the Whole Metha house was in the common space.
Blue's face looks wordily upon the crowd, but neither me nor Kiki speaks a word.
Soon I hear a few 'wait where is Vi?' then the commotion erupts.
Blue finally stands on the coffee table and whistles loudly. Our attention was on her in her fuzzy blue bathrobe and sleepy eyes.
"As many of you know there is a problem, but everything will be okay." She holds up her hands
"Where Vi!" Genevieve shouts from the crowd. Her raven like hair pulled back in a bun. Her lips quivered, but she did not cry.
Blue hesitates, but gives in.
"Brace yourselves" Blue warns then silently whispers. "I swear to god I don't get paid enough." I smile. A small ray of hope in the dark.
"Miss. Vi was an amazing friend to many of you, but sadly Kiki and Danny made the discovery of her body tonight."
Blue continues through the gasps and crys.
"I'm so sorry to many of you, but Vi is dead." Crys erupt form the group and many people are in shock.
Kiki and I stay silent.
"Classes are canceled for today and tomorrow, no one, leaves campus." Blue says stepping off the table and going to comfort some students.
Mid day around 9:30 AM police arrive on the scene. Helicopter came over way. But the main thing I focus on is David Love.
He never looked shaken up, or nervous. He was still and silent. He went on with life, almost ignoring the fact his ex was just found dead.
Police come to Metha house and pull a few students. Ben, Kiki, Daisy, David, and me.
I follow the two men in suits towards the Great house. We sit in chairs and are called into the Main office room one by one. First Ben, then Daisy, then Kiki, then me. I'm greeted by a man named Agent Carter. He smiled then began asking me questions.
"So, Daniella, tell us what happened, your own story."
"Danny, please." I start off, Carter nods.
"Me and Vi were going to study, she never showed up, so I looked for her. I thought she might be out with Kiki, so I looked and I did find her, except what I found was her, but dead." The lies slip through my lips. I would solve this, not them.
My eyes water a bit. Bitch, don't cry now. She was not your friend. She meant nothing to you.
I picture Vi's lifeless form. Her sharp eyes and strong glare. Her once evil laugh and claws for nails.
"Now, when you said you found her, where exactly was that?"
"In a pit, a big one, in front of the anatomy building, lift up a patch of grass, then open the hatch."
Why were they asking me that, they already knew that part.
"And at what time?"
"Around three AM." I say giving him my profound answers. It went on like this, him giving me silly questions, and me giving silly answers. The last one stunted me, only a bit.
"Out of this group, who would have the most motive to kill, to murder, Vicky?"
My face lanced around the room.
"I don't know." But I do know, at least I think I do, I just need time, time to think.
Something was off about this investigation.
David came after me. I watched him sit in the chair not making eye contact as he passed me. The door was closed in my face.
When David came out he sulked back to the chair where He was sitting.
Kiki was bursting in tears, her mascara was running down her face.
Agent Carter thanked us for our time. Then we were sent free.
I had been calm until now.
The emotion hit me like a big wave. I ran into the bathroom of the great house and slumped against the wall breathing heavily. What was happening? My mind was racing and my heart loud. Everything made no sense.
Then I heard it. Voices coming from the other side of the vent.
"Lacerations on side, stomach, legs and arms." The nurse office was on the other side of the wall.
That's where they must be keeping Vi's body. It felt wrong to say it like that. Body.
"Bullet wound to the head and, let's have an ultrasound for abdominal bleeding." I heard rusting around and a few beeps.
"Abdominal bleeding is a yes, and abnormal figure, take it deeper please." A dull sound lingered until I hear the words that made everything stop.
"It appears that." The FBI nurses stop. "Subject was pregnant."
I cover my gasps and cries with a hand. No, why?
And how?
She was pregnant, and she was killed, who ever killed her either had to have known, or didn't have a clue about it.
My head was spinning, circles, connect the dots Danny it can't be that hard.
But it was that hard.
Who would do that? I hear the creaking of a door open.
"Danny, are you in here?" A voice asks, it was Daisy.
"Yeah, sorry." Daisy's eyes soften when she sees me on the floor. She sits beside me.
"This is fucked up." I nod in agreement. We stay there for a few moments, just sitting in silence.
Daisy has that vibe. She lets your stress go away, she makes your mind clear. Your thoughts drift off, It was nice, especially right now at this time.
The seconds seem like houses but really, I find myself walking out of the great house with many of the others and back towards the Metha house.
David.
His name comes to mind when I see him already at Metha. He sits on the couch in a silent mass. His face was pale and he looked shaken up. At least now he was showing some emotion. I try and pay no attention to him, but my eyes linger from across the kitchen counter where I was grabbing a mug of coffee. The dark liquid swirled in my cup. Sugar was split on the counter top along with coco puffs and stains.
I wanted to know more.
I grabbed another mug, I filled it up with more coffee and headed over to where David Love sat. He looked at me with a strange face, it was blank, but his eyes showed what he was thinking.
What the hell do you want?
He looked from the mug and back to me.
"Talk" I say. A simple word that could satisfy me. He picks up the mug.
"Why?" Another word, a question I have myself asking more than enough.
"Because you're too damn miserable, and I don't want you making me even more miserable, so talk."
David took a small sip. His sigh was one with weight. Something was holding him down, holding back what I needed him to share with me. Whatever chain held him tight, I was willing to try and break.
"She's my ex, or was." He pauses regret lurking in his big eyes. "She knew my problems, she fixed them, like that." He snapped his fingers, the sound echoed around the room.
"We were similar, her parents thought." He stopped. His fingers twitched and played with themselves.
I do the same. My mug feels hot in my hands, the warm fluid burns my tongue.
"Look, I've got to go, sorry." He did not look sorry. He looked uncomfortable, angry, irritated. He was not happy with my prying questions. He was hiding from my questions.
He sets the mug down and goes in the direction of the stairs.
"Umm, wait." I say struggling for an excuse.
"What?" He sounds annoyed with me, but I need to know more.
"Umm, please if you could just tell me more, I want to help." I find the helpless words float out of my mouth. We were alone. His face glared at me. I had pressed someone's button a bit too hard.
"God!" He yells. "Just stop, she understood me she was a disappointment, a mistake, just like me!" His words throw me back. I don't know what to say.
"She knew me, how to care about me, no one else did, and now she's gone, she's dead!" I see boiling anger on his face.
"I made the mistake, okay, what we did was a mistake, what we had, was a mistake, I couldn't trust her."
My face was pale, I had never seen someone so angry, so sad, so scared.
"I couldn't bear the thought of what we..." He stops himself.
"You," He breaths "You can't trust, anyone here."
