Chapter 3: Your Late

Day came out to meet me with Ben. Blue came to collect Kiki

Day talked to me a bit about the lesson. "Blue said you don't need to do any homework, I mean taking care of Druk Kiki was a lesson in deed."

I laughed at that. Then an Impulse took over me. I jutted out my hand and I waited for Ben to shake it.

He did, his grip was thick and strong.

"Im Danny, Ben right?" Be casual, be normal, be...nice.

"Yeah." He says. Ben's voice was deep but sweet. Like honey. I could see why Daisy liked him.

"Hey I've got to go to class, bye, and nice meeting you Danny" I waved goodbye as he Kissed Day on her rosy cheeks.

"Someones in Love." I mock the Day. I get up off the ground dusting grass of my head

That Kiki had put onto me.

"Okay, I've got to go to History." Day said longingly looking at Ben as he walked off.

"Okay." I saw her tuck in a small note into her jean pockets as she walked off. I stood up and walked towards Metha house.

Once inside the cozy cabin like space I prepared lunch. It was around noon and it was the first lunch time.

In the back kitchen. I prepared a green salad and a fruit smoothie.

With my things in hand I turn around and yell.

"Jesus!"

David's face was staring right at me.

"Hey sorry about that." He says looking at my salad on the floor.

"Here let me get you a new one. He slides past me in the tight space. I watch him get me a new one and pay for it. He handed the machine a wrinkled dollar bill.

"Thanks" I say smiling at him.

He gets one for himself as well. When he handed me mine our fingertips brushed and touched. I felt the slight rough skin on his knuckles.

Hey smiled as I did this. Awkwardly I looked at him with the cringiest face.

Why the hell did you do that Dany? I ask myself, wanting to die.

I walked over to the big gray farmhouse table and sat. So does David. He sat right across from me.

"So how are you doing, with your first day and all?" He asks, his voice was shallow and limiting. He asked it as I stuck a leafy green bite in my mouth. Oh my god.

"Good," I replied after finishing chewing.

We continued to have a formal conversation four about two minest when Vi walked in with some girl I had never seen before. She gave David a glare, a hard one. He smiled cheesily in return.

Vi got a coffee and sat with the girl by the fireplace. My watch beeps and I look down, a small alert comes onto the screen. 'Library'

"Oh shoot, hey I've got to go to the Library, see you around!" I say getting up and grabbing my back then hurrying out the door.

Inside the Library and Libral arts building long shelves filled with books and galleries loomed above. It had ladders to reach the highest shelves. Mahogany wood bookcases lined the walls from ceiling to floor. It was every avid reader's dream.

Mrs. Kalre met me at the entrance behind a small oak wood table. A lamp lit the darker space from above and many papers and books littered her desk.

"Hello, I'm Klare, You're Danny Belle, okay, we'll do what you like!"

I nod to search the Library's numerous shelves for one titled Mystery. After finding my shelf I grabbed a ladder and climbed up to the top where I attempted to reach Sherlock Holmes. I grabbed the red velvet cover 'A study In Scarlet' The words dripped gold and blooded.

I climbed down and read, the words were strong and the story just as I remembered, she locks personality never out of line. I read for hours until my watch beeps again.

'Liberal Arts' The small words popped up bright and white.

I quickly checked out the book then tried to rush to the English and Arts building.

Once inside I plop down in the back of the class. An old woman in a scarf and long sweater. Thick winkles cover her face and arms. Her eyes were coated in a dark blue eye shadow.

Bright red lipstick was on her saggy lips. It looked like she was straight out of the 40's.

"W-Welcome, to Literacy and arts." Her voice was small.

"Helping someone to read and write effectively or acquire the basic math skills so many of us take for granted, improves the future of everyone in society. Literacy is critical to economic development as well as individual and community well-being. Our economy is enhanced when learners have higher literacy levels." She continued. Her voice was soothing

Light and airy, it could lull you to sleep like some harmony. She continued to talk as my eyes drowsily drifted off. My eyelids were becoming heavy and droopy.

I placed my head on my arms and slept.

I awoke to an arm jabbing me. I shot my head up to see Ben's face, his lips were moving and a quiet sound was escaping them, was he whispering?

"What?" I ask

"Class is over." He gestures to the empty room with a few stragglers.

Oh, my, god, I slept through class!

"No, ugh, what did I miss?" I ask him quickly.

"Nothing, really, just her talking about her dead dog named Francine.

"Oh, good." I grabbed my bag and walked out with Ben.

Outside fresh air infiltrated my face. It was wonderful. It washed out the scent of Quinns old classroom filled with lavender and berry candles from bath and body work.

"So, you really like Daisy?" I politely ask. I want to get in on my only friend's relationship.

"Umm, yeah I guess." Oh god, he is not intelligent.

I turn around to scold him but he's gone.

Confusion flushed my face, the cold turning my nose a light reddish pink color. Fall was coming soon. Orange brown and yellow were biting at the green leaves.

Weird.

I decided to skip the optional class with Miss. Smith, AKA Creepy Smith as many of the students call her.

Back at Metha house everyone is going about eating dinner talking and sitting by the fire. I walk in as one of the last. The day was pretty much over.

I watched the fire fliker. It was 11:30. Day had just gone to bed, and so had everyone else in the house. But I was still up. The History Lesson today was still nagging at my head.

What to do?

Blue had gone up as well. I heard her fuzzy slippers lightly tap on the wood stairs.

Her fuzzy gray robe slipping out of my view.

I had pulled out my notebook and began writing out Ideas.

Mini tunnel model, no.

Family timeline, no.

The Holes in the wall... yes. Now that was a project.

My pencil flew across the page. I drew a rough outline of a wall with a missing spot in the center. In the hold I placed a question mark. Now, what would I find.

I sat my journal in my bag and stood up stretching. Then I hear it. A creaking of a door frame not oiled. A glowing starry light emerged from a crack in the front door.

Vi came creeping in.

"You're late." I say, my voice tight and uneasy. She stares at me worried, frustration crossing her face. Someone Did not want to be caught.

Vi did not speak, she just shut the door quickly.

"Dont stress, I won't tell Blue." What did I just say? Outrage explodes in my mind.

"Thanks Danny, really" Sh hurrys up the stairs. As she moves I see scars, bruises and cuts along her arms and legs. What?

They were like a pattern weaving up her arms and legs. It looked like makeup had once tried to cover them up.

Her once glowy skin now looked like a razor and cut through it.

For the next week. I worked, I learned I watched. I watched Vi come home to Metha later and later, more battered up than ever.

Something was going on.
