Chapter 2: So Many Questions

My head hurt in the early morning light. Raw sunlight burned my sore eyes. What I had done last night resurfaced in my memory. Down in the Common room of Metha house students talked and ate in their pajamas, some in their clothes from yesterday.

Kiki was in a nightgown of a baby pink color.

"Hey Dana, right?" She asks, alcohol dripping off her breath. Her tone was happy and alert. Strange for someone who woke up at six thirty in the morning.

"Hey, yeah, It's Danny" I polity correct her as I pour myself a cup of steamy hot coffee.

"I saw you at the Party last night, did you have fun?" She sits on the counter top of the kitchen and tosses around a bright red apple.

"Yeah, it was, okay" My voice is still tired so I sound a bit like a zombie.

"Fun, Blue is handing out schedules, come on!" She slides off the counter top. I watch her bound off to sit by Daisy. She jumps onto the couch and chats.

My fingers grab my green mug. I stiffly walked over to where everyone was sitting.

Daisy patted an empty spot next to her on the couch. I sat down and looked at Blue who was starting to talk.

"Okay, so, welcome to your first day at Morningstar!" Blue wore a bright blue shirt and gray sweats. Very casual for a teacher, I liked it.

Blue continues "Your teachers this year are, myself, Mrs. Quinn, Mr. E, Miss. Klare, Charles, Miss. Hankook, and Security John." I hear sighs echo around the room like a ripple effect from the second year when the name Mrs. Quinn is said.

"Come, on!" Kiki protests "I thought she was dead! She's like a hundred!" Kids nod in agreement.

Blue plants her hand on her hip and sighs.

"Oh come on guys, she is still a good teacher" Blue protests fall on deaf ears.

"She's half blind!" David yells out from the back.

David, David Love. Vi's Ex-boyfriend, the boy who was staring at me last night. David who was smiling cheekily and had a sharp jawline and curly dark brown hair. David who was in a pair of worn Yale sweats. And a grey hoodie. David, who was looking so hot-okay, slowed down Danny, he was not hot!

Behind him was Vi coming down the stairs. Her hair was curled and she had a full face of makeup.

Her stride was elegant and her perfume smelled of lemon and peach and vanilla.

Her sharp eyes glowed and Glared at David as she passed by. The whole group grew silent as she sat down. It was like they all shook in her presence, The Queen is here, bow to me my slaves. That is what her presence said. On an ottmin a Girl named Genevieve sat. She glared at David as well.

And then there were two.

Blue waited for the utter silence to end before continuing.

"Any way, so glad you could join us Vi." Her mocking voice was straining to be kind, but it lacked in it.

"Well, here is your schedule, read them through first classes starting at seven, also breaks can be spent anywhere on campus." Kiki rolled over and let her head hang over the side of the orange couch. Her nightgown flew up a bit revealing nothing anyone wanted to see. But she couldn't care less.

David covered his eyes.

As if to say, not again Kiki!

Papers were passed around the room. Once my paper lamed in my hand I observed my life laid out on paper.

7:10 History with Mr. E

8:10 Math with Charles

9:10 English with Mrs. Hannok

---Break 10:10-10:30 Break---

10:40 Astronomy and Science With Miss. Blue

11:40 Library time (Miss. Klare)

---Lunch 12:30-1:00 Lunch---

1:10 Liberal and Effective Arts With Mrs. Quinn

2:10-3:00 Special Consent Electives With Miss. Smith (Optional)

Optional, the word simply meant that it was a choice in whether you wanted it or you didn't.

But to me, it said, oh we are not forcing you to be alone with creepy smith in a room for an hour.

"What classes did you get?" Day asks me as she peeks over my shoulders.

"Here" I hand her my paper and she compares.

"Oh look, we got math, Science, and English together!" she smiled with me.

It will be nice to have Day with me in some of my classes.

The packet also includes a map. The property is very big, it's filled with many gardens and paths, buildings, and tunnels. People say that games were played once at this place. That the tunnels were a part of a maze. They winded around and had dead ends. It was a masterpiece under the old frame.

Feeling a bit more energized I decide to go get ready. I change into a pair of high waited jeans and my bright dusted red fisherman style coat over a cropped white tee.

Stand out, or look simple?

I pilled all of my notebooks and papers in my camo green backpack. First stop History class. Out the door and into the crisp fall air. It was warmer yesterday. Now the green leaves had a slight yellow to them. The fall breeze sings throughout the campus.

I try to navigate by the map but end up going to the gym.

"Hey, you need any help?" I turn, thinking to see someone I don't know just being nice.

But I turn to meet warm brown eyes curly brown haired David smiling at me.

"Oh, David, um, Hi, yeah, um..." My nervousness makes me sputter.

"Danny right, going to history, follow me, I have it as well." I don't protest but I walk with him.

He carries one book in his hand, wears a pair of frayed ripped jeans, and a crisp black shirt.

He took us along a path lined with rose bushes.

"Mr. E, he is nice, but intense, today we're doing 'Secrets Of Morningstar' again."

Fun. I nod and look at my feet as they click on the stone. I avoided David's eyes successfully till we arrived.

David was a predator.

The Arts and History Building was tall and had many rows of columns lining the entrance. I walked up the steps with David in front of me. Once inside two dark wood staircases lead in different directions.

I followed David up the ones on the right. He opened a tall mahogany wood door.

"Right after you." He implies acting like a door handler.

My eyes down I sit in the back of the class. David sits next to me. The Bell rings.

What is with this guy?

Then Vi walks in, her shrinking skin illuminating the barren room filled with dusty maps and globes lining the dirty window seals.

Her hair bounces behind her as she takes a seat in front of me and David.

What am I missing? They broke up, but Day said that they would get back together.

"Welcome to History, Im Mr. E, today in class we will be learning about the Secrets Of Morningstar."

Many second years grew boredom. But i'm still listening.

I notice David rubbing his finger over an old beaten up watch. The surface opposes many scars. It reads Rolex engraved in faint gold.

Rich boy, huh?

"To start off, open up your textbooks, turn to page ten, and read till page thirteen." I opened up my old history book I found at a thrift store, let's say I had a budget.

My eyes fly across the page.

'In the late 1930's Morningstar was a house of games, as described by young James Morningstar. His grandfather had built the palace originally for a retreat in the hills, but ended up using it to collect dust. In the 40's-50's James's father Wendle took up the place in his own father's will. He created a house of games with it. Building a maze of tunnels beneath the old framework.

The photo of the tunnels caught my eyes. It was black and white, men stood in the dark place and had lit matches. A few ladies Todd smoking cigarettes in plush dresses and with curled short hair, quite like mine.

James's father made it a gameplay casino, wine cellars were later discovered in the 70's and many bodys were found hidden in the tunnels in the 60's. James had one son before he died, his name was Chase Morningstar, Chase's nephew Don, or Donnelly now owns the great estate in the mountains after his Uncle was killed.

Don renovated it into the school it is now. Morningstar Academy. One thing that was not renovated are the tunnels beneath the school. Wine cellars have been blocked off as well as the tunnels. But they are still open and full of surprises. Many hidden doors and levers are still around the school. They may be dusty, but they are still a popular attraction for students and Morningstar, that is why they have created a set of rules to prevent further cuorisicity.

One of the many things that has been blocked off and filled in are the famous Holes in the walls. Holes in the walls were made to store keys, cigarette boxes, lighters, money, and drinks during its gameplay.

But they were ordered to be blocked off because some old bottles of wine were found in the 90's so who knows what else could be hiding? Students have also hidden things in these holes. All have been blocked off, but there is a strong possibility that some remain.

Some remain? I ask myself. I catch David staring at me again. He does not hide it or anything, he just continues. I look back at may page and flip it, trying to focus in the words instead of David's hot-

Woah! Hold up Danny, take a chill pill, he is not hot! Well...

The woods were a big part of Wendels games. Hunts were played in the woods. Clues hidden in the trees and brush.

My eyes drank in all the words absorbing it.

Page thirteen ended.

"Okay, everyone, back to reality. As you read, you learned about Morningstar's many pasts." Mr.E adjusted his tie and leaned his boey hand on his tall desk.

David turned his head towards Vi, his eyes lingered. I noticed this, I noticed the way David's teeth clenched as he looked at Vi.

Mr. E walked over to his vintage chalkboard and wrote three words: Morningstar Past Assignment

"Your assignment is to project Morningstar's past. Be creative, write a paper, discover."

His voice is dull.

David kept looking over at me. His expression was almost unreadable, friendly?

"You're dismissed, remember, there are things waiting to be discovered."

Things are waiting to be discovered.

Sitting up I grab my bag and try to quickly leave the room. David followed me out. A soft smik wanting to spring onto his face.

I watched behind me as Vi came along. A cashmere sweater folded on her shoulders and a short skirt around her waist.

"Hey, I saw you at the party, what's your name?" Vi's voice was mockingly kind.

She brushed her golden locks behind her ear.

"Hey, yeah, Im Danny." I continue to walk, I slow my pace.

"What are you doing for your assignment?" her tone was casual. Her heels clicked along the way.

"I don't know yet."

"Oh, okay" Her tone drooped at this. She was fishing for Ideas, for someone to do the work for her. Classically played Vi.

Genevieve meant Vi at an old park table. Vi gave me the subtlests of glares.

After English and Math, I finally had a break. Back in cozy common room in Metha house I sat on the couch and used my free time to contemplate on the jumble of thoughts taking over my mind.the

David, was basically stalking me, well no really, Vi had made me her (friend,) and I had homework. Lots of it.

So my mind lingered around in all the chaos.

What would I do for my History Project?

The History of Morningstar was intricate, the old place had many pasts. Some like the reading said, collecting dust, while another past was full of games, maze's and tunnels.

"Hey!" Daisy hopped over the couch and sat by me.

"Oh, hey." I say rubbing my eyes and stretching my neck.

"Come on, It's time for Blues class." She grabbed a stack of books on the wooden coffee table. The door opened and brought with it a cold beginning of a cold breeze. We walked to the Anatomy and Mathematics Building. It was smaller than the last.

Statues lined a way to the entrance.

Naked stone was slapped with bear wind. Their cold stone faces and empty eyes, they looked bank, but sad, as if trapped through the past, witnessing the many mistakes of it.

Daisy walked in with me and led me to the Anatomy room. Blue greeted them, today she wore elegant yoga pants that had flowers twirling up the sides and a white blouse.

I sat in the back, again, with Daisy. A boy with Black curly hair, muscular arms, and tan skin walked in. Daisy clasped her hands around my arm.

"Oh my god." Her voice was tight and squeaky

"What?" I say

"That's Ben!" She looked at me, her green eyes were lit up.

"And that is?" I let it hang in the air. Day rolled her eyes at me. She hopped off her stool and walked over to Ben. I heard a muffled Hello, in a flirty tone. She leaned into Ben's face and they Kissed.

She walked over to me and giggled a bit.

"So, it's that, kinda Ben." Rule number three, Kind of Ben. I added in my mind.

"Okay, it's day one, today we are learning about the body's response to different types of drinks"

Blues tone switched from happy to serious.

"Starting off with alcohol." She held up a bottle of Gin. Popular from the 30's.

She held up a fake brain as well.

"The first part of the brain alcohol hits is your cerebral cortex, making you more talkative and less inhibited."

That would explain many things at the party last night.

Blue continues.

"-Because the cerebral cortex controls conscious thought, language and social interaction, these aspects of our personality begin to run less efficiently under the influence of alcohol."

She points as she talks.

"Our brains control rationality and these certain aspects, we can gain or lose thought under this influence."

Blue sets the brain down on the table. "Now as the Anatomy teacher, they put this on me, but rules are important, no drinking on campus." I hear a laugh from the back of the class.

I turn to see Kiki snorting.

"Oh god, sorry, sorry." She breathlessly tries to get out. Blue tries to keep a straight face, but a smile creeps on.

"Okay, back to reality, when under this influence what we think is real can or could be real, we interpret things, we say things, we lose control."

Kiki laughs, losing control.

"Oh man," I hear Blue mutter.

"Anyway, when a person consumes alcohol regularly, it affects the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. These chemical messengers transmit signals through the body that control behavior, emotion and thought processes."

Kiki begins to crack up in the back.

"Okay, Kiki, why don't you take a break with umm..." She scans the room.

"Umm, okay Danny would you mind helping her." I look up from my homework and sheepishly say.

"Oh, yeah." I get up and follow Kiki out the door and into the hallway. Kiki had been drinking.

The door closes, but I hear the last part of the sentence.

"It impacts the movement between neurons and neurotransmitters, which are the command center for all major functions of the body including breath, speech, thought, and movement."

Kiki exhibits all of this. She stumbles and twirls around in her skirt, it flies up a bit and I cover my eyes.

"So, Danny, how are you." She laughs as the burning smell of vodka drips off her tongue.

"Good, nothing much has been happening." I say reaching out for her as she tumbles onto the ground. She gets up and runs to the doors.

"Hey, Kiki, no!" I yell running after her. She topples down the steps and leans on one of the statues.

"Woah, you okay." I ask out of breath. She nods a bit.

"Hey, did you know that there is a tunnel right by our feet." her drunk mind spews out.

"Oh," I say.

"Yeah me Vi and David found it in our first year, there's a man hole and a ladder. Another dude joins us sometimes, I don't know him though." She laughs and strokes the statue's face.

Kiki continues. "We drink down there, Vi does some other things too, but she never tells me what she does." She sits on the floor and plays with the grass.

Blues lessons ring in my ear.

It makes you say things you wouldn't.

Kiki was doing just that.
