IX
So if you haven't noticed I'm not really including the pets of Mount Justice in this fanfic. Like Wolf and Sphere. Sorry :(
And I asked a question a while ago about what this chapter should be about. That was a long time ago... most people chose circus so... here we go :)
Two days later, and Renegades horrid fever was completely gone. Long story short, everyone soon learned that they hated when Renegade got sick. He eventually threw up, on Artemis' shoes. He spilled a full open bottle of medicine all over Kid Flash. He punched Connor... just because, his illness has nothing to do with that one... He made non-stop cheesy fish puns at Kaldur... which was also probably just because... Though, worst of all, he yelled a long string of curse words at Batman when he tried to stop him from binge watching 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. Basically, the last two days were absolute torture for anyone who stepped into the Mountain.
Fortunately, that no longer seemed to be the case. The said teenager found himself to be healthy as ever (sort of) as he was currently walking into the main room. At that moment is when he saw an extremely cheery M'gann and a highly unenthusiastic team,"What's up my brotato chips? How's life treatin' ya? Except you Supey, don't answer that, you're the broccoli that I would feed to my dog."
Superboy just shook his head and muttered something incoherent under his breathe.
Renegade decided to address the bright smile plastered on the martians face,"Why the smiles, Miss M?"
M'gann clapped her hands happily,"We're going to the circus today! I got us tickets last week!"
"The circus?"Reneagde raised an eyebrow,"Ew, they smell like manure. Superboy I take back what I said, you're not broccoli, you're elephant shit."
"It's going to be so much fun! We need some team bonding now that we have a new member."
"New member? Y'all recruited a new guy and didn't even tell me?! Wow... What's next? Wait, am I being replaced?! I cannot believe-"
"Renegade, you are the new member." Kaldur sighed.
"Oh.... Wait... this is only temporary, ya know. In a matter of days, I'll be out of here. I'll be watching TV all day long, eating 24/7, and not giving a crap about the rest of the world."
"As long as you're not killing." Kid Flash shrugged.
"You'll be leaving soon? Did Batman tell you this information?" Aqualad asked.
"Nah, but you guys have to get bored of me sometime." No one objected his words as they recalled the last few days of torture.
"Can't we just go to the mall or the movies,"Artemis complained.
"Yeah, the circus is pretty lame," Kid Flash added,"They always do the same things over and over again."
"I've never been to a circus before, please!" M'gann pleaded.
"I guess," The archer replied sighing.
"Renegade, have you ever been to a circus?" M'gann questioned.
"Nah, they seem too lame for me, ya know? Plus, I would have had to steal a ticket to get in. Too much effort. What can I say, I'm a lazy guy."
"What do we call you?" Kid Flash stepped up,"As in you're civilian name."
"King, Master of All, Handsome, Sexy, Mr. Better than Everyone, Emperor... or just Ren."
"Let's go with the last one,"Artemis suggested with a slight roll of her eyes.
"You can call me Wally!"
"Wally want a cracker?" Renegade chirped.
"Hey! My name is not Polly! W-A-L-L-Y."
"Is it safe to be giving out our civilian names?" Superboy raised an eyebrow. His distrust in Renegade was still extremely obvious, despite them having been forced to "bond and act as friends" or whatever.
"Hm.. well it's too late now,"Wally shrugged.
"Then call me Connor,"
Reneagde laughed,"Wow, basic. And I thought Wally was bad."
"Hey!"
---
Renegade slowly approached the large circus tent, reading the brightly colored banner that hung across the open entrance: Haly's Circus. He squinted at the sign, getting a strange nostalgic feeling. Though it was immediately brushed off.
"That's a dorky name." Renegade murmured as he adjusted the sunglasses sitting on his face. Apparently, he couldn't go out in his usual attire, which consisted of his bullet proof vest, his utility belt, his mask, and remaining stealth items. He was forced to dress as a boring civilian and wear dark sunglasses over his eyes that kind of added to his "cool-factor"
The team didn't exactly know his identity, but it didn't matter much, Batman was bound to tell them eventually and Renegade didn't really need to fall back on his past identity if necessary anyways. Though the ex-assassin still felt obligated to wear the shades for the moment being. Renegade preceded privacy, his eyes tended to draw unwanted attention. And not being in his suit made him feel vulnerable to attacks. As if something was lurking in the shadows waiting to attack him.
The team took no time to show their tickets to a middle aged man standing the ticket booth, who eyed Renegade strangely. Fortunately, that didn't last long and they were able to go find their seats.
"These seats are crappier than Connors face! We're too far!" Renegade complained," How do you expect me to throw peanuts at the elephants from here?"
"Please behave,"Kaldur sighed.
"Yeah, whatever, Mom." The poorly behaved teen slouched in his chair, folding his arms in front of his chest.
"Please, just don't cause any disasters." Connor groaned.
"Disasters? Me?! .... Hey, if there is disaster, shouldn't there be an aster. You know, if things go right?"
Artemis blinked,"How bored are you right now?"
"It makes sense!"
"Hardly."
"At least it makes more sense than your outfit today!"
"Excuse you!"
The lights began to dim through their arguing,"Shut up, it's starting," Wally whispered.
"I thought you didn't even want to be here in the first place."
"Shut up."
After a few moments of darkness, an older man with a receding hairline approached the middle of the circus ring, the spotlight following him to the center.
"That spotlight should be on me, people would pay just to see my very face," The team shushed Renegade immediately.
"Hello, and welcome to today's performance. My name is Jack Haley,"The man began.
"Good for you, can I go home now?" That earned him a shove from Wally.
"Be quiet, Ren."
"Thank you for joining us here today. Today's show is in honor of an unfortunate tragedy that happened exactly four years ago,"
"You decided to waste your money on a circus?" Renegade chuckled to himself, the team growing irritated.
"Our beloved friends and past members, Mary and John Grayson fell during their trapeze act, and with no net to catch them, they died. Sadly, how this occurred exactly is still unknown to this day. They were truly a gift to this circus. Them and their son in which they left behind. Our prayers are with him, whose location is currently unknown," Jack Haley paused.
"I'm willing to bet $20 that he has a goofy name," Renegade laughed,"No, $50."
"Hopefully, you are in a good place Richard Grayson,"Jack lifted his head after a moment of silence,"This show is for the Flying Grayson's!"
Renegade froze. Richard Grayson was his name...
Had he heard wrong?
"What, no sarcastic comment?" Kid Flash asked.
Renegade just remained quiet.
They had just said his name....
Why the hell did they say his name?
Weird coincidence?
Renegade nervously laughed. He hated coincidences. They always came back to bite him in the ass.
"You okay, Ren?" Kid Flash noticed his change in behavior.
"Peachy." Renegade muttered,"You owe me 50 bucks."
"What?"
"The name was goofy."

When the performances were over, the team had a hard time trying to exit the circus tent, with the large masses of people tying to accomplish the same goal.
"We need to find a quicker way out of here."Artemis groaned as she jumped up to see past the crowd. They were all becoming rather impatient as they stood furthest from the exit.
"Short cut!" Renegade yelled as he slipped through a random door to his left. The team, not wanting him to do anything bad and wanting to leave as well, followed close behind.
"Are you sure you know where we're going?" M'gann whispered as she observed the hallway they were in. It was dimly lit, and seemed liked a hallway one would see in a horror game.
"Of course he doesn't," Artemis sighed.
"Let's just turn back," Wally groaned.
"I'm sure we'll find an exit. Much better than being squished between those animals out there." Renegade kept walking.
M'gann frowned,"The elephants and tigers were all in their cages, though."
"Not those animals."
"That's a rude thing to say." Kaldur lightly scolded him.
"Not as rude as Connor making people stare at his ugly face all day long,"
Connor walked closer to Renegade,"What did I ever do to you?"
Before Renegade could reply, a man stood at the end of the path they were walking. He was immediately recognized as the Ringmaster who they had seen during the show. He had his hands on his hips and his head was tilted slightly to the right,"What are you kids doing here? You get lost?" He chuckled slightly as they approached.
"Lost until I found you," Renegade joked, nudging his speedster friend.
"Excuse me?"
Artemis stepped forward,"What my friend is trying to say is that we are trying to find an exit. We didn't mean to intrude."
"Oh, that's quite alright. It can get packed out there. Here, I'll lead you out." Right when Jack was about to turn around, he paused, and started at Renegade questioningly.
"What are you staring at, old man?"
"I'm sorry, but do I know you?"
Renegade looked up," Yes, we met once.... in a dream.... No, of course we don't know each other. It's probably just these dim lights."
"I'm terribly sorry for offending you," Jack lowered his head and walked forward. The path eventually led to the backstage of the circus where there were the various acts that they had seen during the performance, as well as the animals.
"Hey, Uncle Haley!" A red-headed female called out to the ringmaster,"Great show tonight, am I right? It was so nice of you to bring up the Grayson."She was currently tending to an elephant.
"Would you get mad if I stole an elephant?" Renegade leaned over and whispered to Kaldur.
"Please refrain from doing so." Kaldur whispered back.
"Who are these kids?" The female approached."Here to see some more?"
"We really shouldn't stay." Artemis muttered, against the idea of staying any longer.
"Aw, well at least tell me if you liked the show." She smiled brightly.
"It was wonderful." Kaldur responded.
"I have a bad feeling about this" Renegade suddenly heard Artemis' voice within his mind.
"Why? They're nice people. What could they do?" M'gann replied.
"They could charge their elephant on us. Release their tigers!" Renegade suggested.
"They're not you."
"I would never release tigers. Not without training them to obey my every command. Though elephants I would set free, not gonna lie. Then I would set a bunch of mice loose and watch them panic! Haha!"
"Do I know you?" Renegades mind snapped back to reality as he was suddenly asked the same question once again.
"Why do they keep asking you that? Do they know you? Is there something you're not telling us?" Wally's voice was heard this time.
"If I say they don't know me, they don't know me. They're just crazy after inhaling all these animal fumes."
"Doesn't he look familiar... I thought the exact same thing...almost like...." Mr. Haley looked as if he was trying to pinpoint an exact name to match his face.
Just then, the female stuck her arm out, pulling the sunglasses off of Renegades eyes causing the two adults to gasp.
"Lady, what do you think you're doing?" Renegade raised his hands in a defensive form.
Aqualad moved in front of the young teen, immediately feeling the urge to protect him,"May I ask exactly what you are doing?"
"D-dick?" Mr. Haley whispered. His voice sounded hurt and had a slight shaky tone to it.
"Only one person has those eyes,"The female looked at Renegade as if he were some kind of jewel. Perhaps he should have worn goggles instead...
Renegade backed away, beginning to feel oddly claustrophobic," I don't know how you know my name or who you are, but I do know that if you're trying to kill me, this is not a battle you will win. I-"
He was suddenly enveloped in a hug,"Where have you been this whole time? After your parents died, you were reported missing..."Jack Haley had been the one who had hugged him. Renegade immediately pushed him off, the man looking betrayed by the action.
"Don't touch me! And... m-my parents, what? You don't know me."
"Dickie, don't you remember us? We're your family. I watched you grow up. I was there when you were born."The woman looked just as hurt.
The team sent him glances, obviously confused about what was happening.
"Tell us the truth. Who are these people?"
Superboys voice was heard through the mind link.
Renegade couldn't process what was happening. Nothing was making sense. This has to be some kind of trap, right?
"I-I....I'm just trying to find an exit.."
---
"Your name is Dick? Huh, that's fitting." Superboy laughed, apparently not having noticed when Black Canary said his name the day before. They had returned to the Mountain with questions racing through their minds.
"Shut up, those people were probably assassins, sent to kill me." Renegade felt his hands begin to shake,"We should have annihilated them when we had the chance.
Artemis shook her head,"First of all, we won't be killing anyone and it doesn't seem like that at all, they called you family. How do you not know who they are? They seemed to know you pretty well."
The ebony wasn't very fond of the strangers they had just encountered. They had called him family. Never had Renegade actually felt a part of a family before. His parents kicked him out and Deathstroke was pretty far from being a family man. The nicest thing his mentor ever did for him was probably when he died.
"You're buying that act? You would, blondie. I think I'd remember growing up in a circus."
"We need to report this to Batman." Aqualad stood up,"He'll be able to deduce whether these people can be trusted or not. Until then, it is best to ignore what just occurred unless you can fill in the blanks for us Renegade."
The said teen sighed,"This isn't some MadLibs game. I'm just as confused as you are. I'll let Bats do his homework instead."
M'gann frowned,"It might be best if you tried to consider what connection you might have with them."
"Yeah, whatever, I just need a nap." Renegade walked away, the previous events still fresh though his mind. He never had a mission with these weird circus people, right? There was no reason that he shouldn't know them... And what was that about this parents... They were dead?
Oh hey... it's my birthday :)
