Will Herondale #1

Most of your life has been spent in the London Institute, growing up among the Shadowhunters. These days, you hardly remember your parents, but anyone at the Institute who knew them would tell you what they knew about them if you asked. They were a quiet, private couple who didn't have many friends, but they were known for good people and great fighters, which had earned them everyone's respect. After they were killed on a mission when you were a child, it didn't seem you had any other close relatives, so you were taken in at the Institute and trained to become a Shadowhunter.

Everyone at the London Institute has always been kind to you. Since you've grown up there and spent most of your life with them, you've always been considered one of them. You get along well with pretty much everyone, but there is no one you feel a greater connection to than William Herondale.

From the first day Will arrived at the Institute, you've always been interested in him. In the beginning, he didn't seem particularly interested in you, but that changed over time. You became great friends and spent a lot of your time together. Over time, you begin to fall a little in love with him. Whether he feels the same way you can't tell; you've never been able to figure it out. Sometimes he seems very close, other times he feels a little more distant, like maybe he isn't too interested in you after all.

There is one thing that is for sure when it comes to Will: you need his help more than you thought you would. You always thought that once you began going out into the world to fight Downworlders and demons, you would be ready. But it seems you're not. Every time you go out on some sort of mission, you nearly get yourself killed, and every time, Will has been there with you to save you. Obviously, you couldn't be more thankful for Will, but after the first few times it begins to get embarrassing that you can never manage to save yourself.

On the eighth time this happens, you decide you've had enough.

"I don't think I can do this anymore," you say to Will when the two of you return to the Institute. "Do you think I'm not ready for this?"

"I wouldn't say that," he answers. "You're already great with that sword of yours. It seems that you need more confidence in yourself."

"Well, I already had that, but I think I was overconfident. If you hadn't been there with me every time, I would be dead by now." You sigh. "Maybe now I need to work on real confidence."

"All right. I'll help you if I can."

"You want to?" you ask. "If I keep this up, I think I'll become very difficult to work with."

"You? Nonsense. I like working with you."

You give him a smile. "It's a good thing your parabatai is Jem and not me. It would make this feel a little more awkward. You and me, I mean."

He smiles back. "I know what you mean. Let's get to work, shall we? And who knows? Maybe after that, we'll get to have some times to ourselves."
