The Choice (Supernatural/Divergent)

This was the day Sam Winchester had a choice to make, a choice that would impact the rest of his life.

Sam wasn't sure if he wanted to stay in Dauntless. Most of the Winchesters stayed in Dauntless, and his family probably didn't expect him to be any different. Why would he be any different when everyone else was the same?

Sam never felt like he really belonged in Dauntless. Yes, it was his home, and it was the only home he'd ever had. But still, he really thought he ought to be living somewhere else.

So, when the day came when Sam had to decide which faction would stay his home for the rest of his life, he was at odds with himself. How do you make a choice like that and then live with it for the rest of your life? What kind of choice was that to give someone so young?

But Sam stayed strong. When his turn came to choose, he showed no signs of being afraid. He calmly walked up and considered his options. He could stay in Dauntless, where he felt he didn't belong, or he could choose another faction, one where he could be himself, and not have to be whatever his own faction and family expected of him.

So, he made his choice. Instead of Dauntless, he chose Euridite.

He knew his mother would be disappointed, his father angry. But the one who really didn't seem to understand was Sam's older brother, Dean.

"Why did you do that?" Dean asked. "Choose a different faction?"

"Because I wanted to," Sam answered.

 "Well, what's wrong with Dauntless?"

"There's nothing wrong with Dauntless, Dean. It's just not for me."

"What do you mean it's not for you?" Dean asked. "Sam, you've lived there your entire life and you've done great. Why change now?"

"Because I can, and I want to," Sam answered. "It's not like we'll never see each other again. You can come visit me whenever you want, and I'll be back to visit you."

Dean sighed. "All right. If that's the way you want things to be."

After saying goodbye to his family, Sam got on the train to Euridite. He was excited to see what life was like in another faction, but he also had a guilty feeling deep down, one that made him wonder if he was doing the right thing by leaving his family.
