Natasha Romanoff #1
Your wife Natalie isn't like anyone you've ever known before. You've never known anyone who acted as mysterious and secretive as she does. That was what originally attracted you; there was something about her mysteriousness that reeled you in.
When you married Natalie, you knew there was something off about her. She often had to go away for work, and was always very vague on what "work" meant. You were never even sure what exactly her job, and you never met the people she worked with. However, there has always been something about her that makes you feel you can put her faith in her. Whenever she goes, she always comes back. That's what makes you believe you can put your faith in her.
And then the day comes when you discover just what exactly Natalie's job is. You would have had to have been living a rock to not know about it. They were calling it the Battle of New York, and the ones who saved the city were being called the Avengers. When you see it on the television, you immediately recognize one of these Avengers: it's Natalie.
For nearly a week, you keep to try call Natalie and you don't receive any answer. You wish she would answer you just once so you find out what's going on. Is this what she's been doing all this time? Running around as part of some superhero crew? If so, why couldn't she tell you? Why be so secretive about everything.
Eventually, Natalie does walk through the door one day. She must know that you've probably seen everything on the news by now, because she doesn't act like she's just been on another business trip.
"I haven't told you the whole truth," she begins.
"You think?" you snap. "Nat, last week I turned on the television and saw you...what's going on?"
"My name is Natasha Romanoff. I used to be an assassin, but now I work for a company called S.H.I.E.L.D. They actually do some good, and it was the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., my boss, who created the Avengers. I know I've been dishonest, and I'm sorry about how this looks."
You can't do anything else besides stare at her for a few long minutes.
"I need some time to process this," you finally say.
She nods. "I understand." She turns and walks back out the door.
It takes time for you to come to terms with the fact that the wife you thought you knew is much more than that. Despite the amount if time it takes, the two of you do reconcile. She does begin to tell you a little about what she does, and you appreciate that, but you also learn not to get in the way and let Natasha Romanoff do her work.
