Your older brother Rolf has often brought messages up to the von Trapp's home, and because of his involvement with Liesel von Trapp, the oldest of the von Trapp children, you meet the siblings on various occasions. You like all of them, but after a few meetings, you start to become good friends with Kurt von Trapp, one of the two boys in the family. You're about the same age, and have some things in common. 

 The siblings all seem to be gifted singers and all love music, so you begin to join them whenever you can. Their stepmother Maria never seems to mind you joining in on any of their fun, and you quickly begin to feel very comfortable among them. 

 As you and Kurt both get older, something slowly begins to change between the two of you. Suddenly, you want to be more than friends with him, and you eventually get him to confess that he feels the same way. At first, you don't think there could be anything to keep the two of you from being able to fall in love freely, but you soon learn that there is one thing that could possibly keep you apart: Captain Georg von Trapp, Kurt's father. 

 In recent years, your brother Rolf has gotten more and more involved with the Nazi Party. Captain von Trapp has made it very clear that he does not approve of them. You yourself don't like the way it has changed Rolf, and it is also what led to his falling-out with Liesel von Trapp, who shares her father's view of the Nazis. As Rolf gets in deeper with the party, you begin to see the von Trapps less and less, and it takes weeks for you to eventually discover that it's because Captain von Trapp doesn't want his children, especially Kurt, spending any more time with Rolf or you. 

 You finally manage to meet Kurt alone one evening, both of you sneaking out of your homes to do so. 

 "I'm so happy to see you," you say to him. "What's happened, Kurt? It's been so long since I last saw you." 

 "It's Father," he answers. "He doesn't want any of us near you or your brother anymore." 

 "Me? But what have I done?" you ask. "It's Rolf who's in with the Nazis, not me! I couldn't care a bit about it, and I don't like the effect it has on him. Your father wouldn't at least approve of us being friends? Are you sure?" 

 Kurt nods. "I'm sure. Not friends or anything else. I'm sorry, Y/N. I don't know what else I can do. I asked my stepmother to talk to him, but I don't know if she will be able to change his mind. He seems firm, and I don't think he'll change his mind." 

 You sigh. "I wish this wasn't happening. I suppose there isn't anything we can do besides try to see each other whenever we can, when your father isn't watching." 

 "I did think of that," he says. "It feels wrong to disobey Father like that, I don't want to have to be separated from you for good." 

 "Well, we are getting older," you point out. "Maybe once we're adults we could get married. If we did, who could separate us then? Please, Kurt, let's meet in secret whenever we can, and maybe better things will come in the future." 

 You reach out to hug him, and he pulls you into his arms. If better things are going to come for you both in the future, you hope that it will be someday soon. You don't know how long you can stand to be separated.
