Jim Moriarty #1
You have had a long day at work, and can't wait to go home for the night. It was a very cloudy morning when you got to work, and you have been hoping all day that it wouldn't rain.
Of course, it's pouring as soon as you walk out the door. You don't even have an umbrella.
You sigh, and look up at the sky. There's no signs of this downpour letting up anytime soon, and you don't see a cab anywhere around, so it seems like the only thing you can do is just get wet.
"Excuse me, miss? Do you need some help?"
You stop looking up at the sky and look at the man who has appeared next to you. He gives you a friendly smile when you see him.
"Sorry if I startled you," he says. "You must need an umbrella. Do you live far from here?"
"No, only a few blocks," you answer. "I figure I'll just brace myself for the downpour."
"Well, you don't have to do that. We can share mine. Your place is probably on my way if it's only a few blocks away from here."
You raise your eyebrows. "You'd actually share your umbrella with me?"
"'Course. It's what any decent person would do."
"Oh. Well...thanks, I guess."
The umbrella is big enough for the two of you to walk underneath together, and you begin to walk together down the street.
"So, I'm Jim," he says. "You?"
"Y/N. You know, you'd think maybe there'd be more cabs around on a day like this. That way less people would have to suffer the way we're suffering in this rain."
"Ah, there's probably so many full ones today that they can't bother rolling around here. I'm not sure I'd get in one, anyway. Did you hear that story not long ago, about that cab driver who turned out to be a serial killer?"
You nod. "I think I did read something about that. Awful, really. Makes you want to walk everywhere, doesn't it?"
"It certainly does. Any of these buildings yours? I think we've gone a few blocks already."
"Um, yeah." You stop. "This one's mine. Hey, thanks, Jim. This was really nice of you to do for someone you don't even know."
"Didn't even know. I know you now, don't I? At least a little bit, and that's because I offered the umbrella. You know, I do walk this way often, and you don't work too far from here. Maybe I'll see you around?"
You nod. "Sounds like you will, Jim. See you."
He gives you another smile and goes on his way.
You like him, you think. He seems like a nice enough guy. But there's also something strange about him; you just can't quite put your finger on it.
