Comfort
This request was made by B1ana_Vack3r, and is the continuation of the previous oneshot, "Forbidden". Hope you like it! Thanks again to my resident Obi-Wan Kenobi expert, EwanMcGregorfan19, for helping me with the picture.
When the blast door slide aside, he held my gaze, then smiled.
"Master Makayla, what a pleasant surprise. How can I be of—" Obi-Wan started, but I ran into his arms and interrupted him before he could finish.
Caught off guard, it took the Jedi Master several moments before he returned my embrace, his arms wrapping hesitantly around my waist. Suddenly, my thoughts returned to my padawan, who continued to fight for her life and relied on the care of medical droids to survive. And here I was, giving into my selfish urges when I should be at her side, comforting her and asking the Force for guidance.
As tears blurred my vision, I quickly pulled away from Obi-Wan and stammered, "I-I'm sorry for bothering you. I should go."
I made to leave, but Obi-Wan placed his hand on my arm and turned me so I was once again facing him.
Seeing right through me, he sighed, "Makayla...I know you want to help, but there's nothing you can do for her tonight. Why don't you sit? I'll make some tea."
I nodded numbly and sat to one side of the small table, Obi-Wan reappearing after several moments with a tray bearing a silver kettle, as well as two dainty teacups perched on white saucers. After he had served us both, Obi-Wan settled into seat across from me and took a sip, sighing with content as the creases between his brow smoothed.
Leaning back and crossing his arms over his chest, he said, "I know there is much on your mind, Kayla. Would you like to talk about it?"
I opened my mouth to reply, but the kindness and familiarity with which he addressed me by using my nickname sent me over the edge, and I began to sob uncontrollably. Kenobi quickly got to his feet and moved to my side as I tried in vain to close the floodgates that allowed my tears to flow freely down my face.
I started to apologize for my behavior, but Obi-Wan once again interrupted me, "Stop apologizing. You've done nothing wrong. Now, take several deep breaths. In through your nose, out through your mouth."
I did as he instructed and eventually calmed down. When I reached up to dry my face, Obi-Wan beat me to it, his hand warm against my cheek as he wiped away my tears. I froze and failed to draw in the next breath, afraid that he might back away if I moved. As if suddenly realizing what he was doing, Obi-Wan's gaze gradually lifted from his hand to my eyes, his blue stare holding my own, green gaze.
Slowly, his hand fell onto his lap, and he quietly asked, "You didn't come to see me because you were upset about your padawan, did you?"
I inhaled sharply, Was my desire really that obvious?
"Not initially, no. But something tells me you already knew that answer," I whispered, looking away as he let out a weary sigh.
"Kayla, you and I both know—" he said, but I raised a hand to cut him off.
"I know, I know. The Jedi are forbidden from forming attachments," I interrupted. "But how can the Order expect us to remain emotionless when our padawans, who are like children to us, are injured? How are we supposed to just not care about the person we're entrusting our lives with?"
Obi-Wan stroked his beard as he sat in a thoughtful silence, and when he spoke, his answer took me by surprise, "We're not supposed to. The Jedi are supposed to treat others with compassion and help those who cannot help themselves. That requires us to care...to feel...to love."
Without warning, Obi-Wan leaned forward and kissed me, his hand resting on the nape of my neck and gently pulling me forward. A fire ignited in my chest and its warmth spread through my entire body, though this time the sensation was pleasant, comforting. When Obi-Wan chuckled quietly, I pulled back and arched an eyebrow.
Smirking, he said, "I doubt Anakin would mind if I took a page out of his book."
...
The next morning, Obi-Wan and I carefully left his quarters and made our way to the medbay, where we found Nora awake and highly amused.
Crossing my arms over my chest, I asked, "And what's so funny?"
My padawan smiled, "I sensed a disturbance in the Force."
