"Did you get in trouble again?"
The only response I got from Newt was a small smile. It was enough for me to know however. I shook my head with a small laugh, tilting my head to look out the window. Newt settled down next to me, holding his hand out to an injured Bowtruckle he found the day before.
"You're going to get yourself expelled someday, you know that?"
"Then I can start saving animals right away!" Newt beamed, causing me to giggle, "Speaking of which, we need to come up with a name for this little guy."
"Hmm," I looked at the small creature, holding out my hand so he could latch onto it. Newt and I were like his trees, "What about Picket?"
"Picket? I like it," Newt grinned, watching the little creature in amazement.
"See? If you got expelled who would come up with names? Not only that, but I'd miss you," I reached out for his hand with my Picket-free blushing when I realized what I'd done, "We're supposed to be a pair. Promise we'll stay friends forever?"
"Would you prefer we do an unbreakable vow?" Newt's voice was teasing, but I was almost tempted to say yes.
"We'll save that for later," I held up my pinky instead, "This will have to do for now. Promise?"
"I promise we'll stay friends forever," Newt agreed, looping his pinky around my own.
Both of us laughed when Picket used our connected fingers to climb onto New instead. He approved of the promise as well.
~*~
"Newt's an interesting name."
"Huh?" I looked up from my typewriter to Queenie, who was smiling brightly at me.
"You weren't thinking about your paper, you were thinking about Newt, and the promise you made. Who is he?"
"He was my best friend back at Hogwarts, a Ravenclaw and a Hufflepuff, who would have guessed? We promised that we would be friends forever, but after he was expelled it was hard to stay in touch, and then my parents moved all of us to America..."
"Maybe you should track him down," Queenie suggested, "Something tells me that you were more than just friends."
I flushed at the comment, glancing down at my half finished paper, "He's the um, he's the one I've been waiting for."
"Oh!" Queenie seemed much more excited about the whole situation, "Then you have to find him, you're in love with him!"
"Love is a strong word," I sighed, slouching down in my chair, "I would prefer the words 'have strong affection for'."
"Honey, you don't hold off on dating for years for something you 'have strong affection for'. As long as Tina and I have known you, you haven't dated anybody. You love him."
"Queenie, I'm likely never going to see him again. It's just a school crush that I need to get over. Now, I really need to work on my paper if I want to keep my job. There have been weird attacks on the Mug- the No-Maj's that seems magical."
"That you, Tina?" Mrs Esposito's voice carried throughout the apartment building.
"Oh, I'll go say hello and see what she wants for dinner," Queenie left my bedroom and made it to the front door, "Teenie, you brought men home?"
That stopped me in my tracks. I moved my typewriter oer on my desk, and stood up. Curious as to what was going on, I left my bedroom for the first time that day and stepped into the dining room.
"Gentleman, this is my sister Queenie. And that's our roommate (Y/n). You want to put something on Queenie?"
"Oh sure," Queenie pulled a dress off the rack.
"Who are they?" I looked over the men. There was something about the taller one, something extremely familiar. If I didn't know any better, I would say that it was-
"That's Mr Scamander. He's committed a serious infraction of the National Statute of Secrecy. And this is Mr Kowalski, a No-Maj."
"Newt Scamander?" I took a few steps closer to the man by the window, grinning widely, "Of course we're brought back together when you've committed a serious crime."
"(Y/n)," Newt seemed to put the pieces together, "(Y/n) (L/n)."
"Hi," I rushed across the rom, pulling him into a tight hug, "I missed you, you look wonderful."
"Yes, you look beautiful as well," Newt's face reddened as he said that, "I'm sorry we had to meet like this. I was trying to bring a Thunderbird to Arizona."
"Hang on, you know this criminal?" Tina seemed appalled.
"Oh, so this is the Newt you were thinking about," Queenie floated into the room, eyes trained on the other man.
"Queenie," I hissed, embarrassed that she revealed my personal thoughts.
"Whoops, sorry about that. Teen, what are you up to?"
"He's sick, it's a long story. Mr Scamander has lost something, I'm going to help him get it back."
"You need to sit down, honey," Queenie pulled out a chair for Jacob, "That's rough, he didn't get the money he wanted for his bakery. You bake, honey? I love to cook."
"You're a Legilimens?"
"Uh-huh, yeah. But I always have trouble with your kind. Brits. It's the accent. Though (Y/n) has helped me a bit," Queenie sent me a bright smile.
"You know how to read minds?" Jacob questioned in shock.
"Don't worry, honey. Most guys think what you was thinking, first time they see me. Now, you need food. Mr Scamander, you prefer pie or strudel?"
"I really don't have a preference," Newt shrugged nervously.
"He prefers strudel," I rolled my eyes, "Unless your preferences have changed since then?"
Newt smiled slightly, shaking his head. I chuckled, settling in one of the dining room chairs. Tina let out a frustrated sigh, stomping into the kitchen. Whether it was to complain to Queenie, or to help her, I didn't know. I wouldn't be surprised if it was both.
"So what have you been doing all these years?" I turned to Newt.
"Well, after I got expelled," even if it was a bad situation, we still shared a smile, remembering that day, "I began to travel. Theseus tried to get me a desk job at the Ministry, but we both know that wasn't going to happen. With my briefcase I went all around the world, studying and writing for my book. A lot of the injured animals I found ended up coming with me."
"Is Picket still with you?"
Hearing his name, the small Bowtruckle popped his head out of Newt's pocket. He scrambled down the fabric of Newt's sleeve and onto mine. I giggled, tilting my head to bump Picket when he settled on my shoulder.
"You still remember me, huh?" Picket nodded in response, "Well you caught on faster than Newt here did."
"I tried to find you, when I visited London a few years ago," Newt spoke up, "But the Ministry records said you had moved to America, I didn't know where."
"My parents got new jobs at MACUSA, pulled me along with them. After I graduated I got a job at the paper. Writing was always my passion."
A comfortable silence fell over us. Well, it was comfortable for Newt and me. Jacob on the other hand, had his eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. I cleared my throat, picking up on how uncomfortable he was.
After another few minutes, Queenie basically skipped into the dining room, the intoxicating smell of food flowing in with her. Behind her was Tina, wand out, with plates of food floating all around her.
Everyone sat down and dug into the food. No matter how many times I ate food Queenie had made, I could never get over how amazing it was. Even Newt and Jacob were impressed.
"Nah. We're orphans," Queenie spoke up, directing the comment towards Jacob, "Ma and Pa died of dragon pox when we were kids. You're sweet. But we got each other!"
"Could you stop reading my mind for a second?" Jacob tugged on his shirt collar, "Don't get me wrong, I love it. This meal, it's insanely good! This is what I do, I'm a cook. And this is, like, the greatest meal I have ever had in my life."
"Oh, you slay me! I ain't never really talked to a No-Maj before," Queenie put her chin in her hand.
"Really?" Tina deadpanned.
"I am not flirting!" Queenie exclaimed, slamming her hand down on the table.
"I'm just saying, don't go getting attached, he's going to have to be obliviated!" Tina turned to Jacob, "It's nothing personal."
"Miss Goldstein, I think Mr Kowalski could do with an early night," Newt finally spoke up, "And besides, you and I will need to be up early tomorrow morning to find my Niffler, so..."
"What's a Niffler?"
"Don't ask."
"I'll show you to the guest bedroom," I stood up from the table as well, leading the others down the hallway with the bedrooms, "It's a lot smaller than all the other rooms, but we needed an apartment with lots of bedrooms so we dealt with it."
"Don't worry, we won't need to worry about the size of the room," Newt assured, setting his briefcase down on the floor.
"Oh! Can I come in with you? I want to see what exactly you've been working on," I beamed, jumping up and down in excitement.
"Sure, as long as you can convince Tina and Queenie to stay away from the bedroom."
"I got it," I stepped out of the room and into the kitchen where Queenie was making three hot chocolates.
"Oh, there you are!" Queenie picked up two of the cups and held them out to me, "I was making you three hot drinks."
"Thanks Queenie, I'll take them in there. Jacob is experiencing a few of the more serious symptoms."
"Is he shooting flames out his anus?" Tina's voice became a mere whisper, worry obvious in her tone.
"No, but he might be getting there. Wingardium leviosa," I waved my wand and summoned the hot chocolates towards me, allowing me to have them float behind me as I reentered the guest room, "Queenie made us some hot chocolate. And if they ask, you almost had flames shooting out of your anus Jacob."
"Oh god," Jacob looked about ready to pass out, "Can that really happen?"
"Not if we give you the proper treatment. Come on," Newt opened up the case, stepping inside.
"W-what?" Jacob sputtered, running over to the suitcase.
"After you," I motioned for the man to step inside. Slowly but surely, Jacob took the ladder down into Newt's private workplace. I followed suit, taking a sip out of my hot chocolate before I did so, "Woah."
I knew that there were expansion spells within the world, but something like this was on a scale I had never seen before. It was like a whole nother world. Newt was far ahead, and Jacob was close behind. While they were distracted, I took a chance to look through Newt's desk area.
There were several potions and other magical objects scattered throughout, but the main thing that caught my attention was the manuscript sitting front and center.
Dipping the nearest quill into some ink, I scanned over the pages, circling and making notes in areas where I found a few obvious mistakes, or things that would sound better a different way.
"Oh, thank Paracelsus. If you'd have got out that could have been quite catastrophic."
I looked over to Newt, stroking the feathers of the Thunderbird he was transporting. It was absolutely beautiful, and majestic. I slowly approached it, putting my hand over Newt's as he stroked the silky feathers of its head.
"Strange, he doesn't usually like strangers," Newt grinned at me, "I suppose you aren't really a stranger though. Not to me at least."
"He was trafficked, you see," Newt began to explain to me and Jacob, "I found him in Egypt, he was all chained up. Couldn't leave him there, had to bring him back. I'm going to put you back where you belong, aren't I, Frank? To the wilds of Arizona."
Loud, herded stomping came up from behind us, "Here they come."
"Here who comes?"
"The Graphorns. They're the last breeding pair in existence. If I hadn't managed to rescue them, that could have been the end of Graphorns, forever."
"You rescue these creatures?"
"Rescue, nurture, and protect them, and I'm gently trying to educate my fellow wizards about them. Come on," Newt walked up a flight of steps and into another section of the briefcase, "Titus? Finn? Poppy, Marlow, Tom?"
"You got more Bowtruckles?" I looked at the wand wood trees around me, "Why wasn't Pickett with them?"
"He had a cold, needed some body warmth," Newt picked up Picket and held his hand out flat, trying to get Pickett to join his other Bowtruckles, "Right, on you hop. Come on Picket."
Picket squaked, running up Newt's arm and to his shoulder, from there he jumped onto my shoulder and hid in my jacket pocket.
"He has some attachment issues," Newt sighed, "Come on Pickett, they aren't going to bully you."
Pickett let out an angered squeak in response. Newt huffed, rolling his eyes.
"That is exactly why they accuse me a favoritism. You aren't helping very much either (Y/n)," Newt turned around, "Oh no, Dougals gone. All right, I'm coming, I'm coming. Mum's here. Mum's here."
"You call yourself Mum? How adorable," I knelt down next to the Occamies, "Would you like to hold one Jacob?"
"Um, sure." Newt handed him one of the small Occamies.
"Your Occamy."
"What do you mean? My Occamy?"
"Yes, here," Newt dropped the Occamy into his hands, "Don't pet them. They learn to defend themselves early. See, their shells are made of silver so they're incredibly valuable. Their nests tend to get ransacked by hunters."
"Thank you," Jacob handed the Occamy back to Newt, "Mr Scamander?"
"Call me Newt."
"Newt, I dont think I'm dreaming."
"What gave it away?" I asked with a laugh.
"I ain't got the brains to make this up. That and I don't think I would imagine you two in love with each other instead of someone being in love with me."
Newt and I both blushed, sending each other looks. I had no idea where Newt losing some of his animals would take us, but I knew that it would be an interesting ending all the same.
~*~
"Do you really think some string is going to hold everyone in there?" I glanced down at Newt's briefcase.
It was strange, having such a normal conversation with him after everything we had just gone through. After introducing Jacob to the animals, we set off to find the ones that escaped. That turned into a larger hunt that revealed dark intentions from someone inside of MACUSA, and a poor boy named Credence who was being manipulated by him.
I hadn't been on an adventure like that in years, and it made an amazing story. Not only that, but I felt as though I had gotten much closer to Tina and Queenie, and Newt and I had reignited the spark that was once between us. Jacob would be sorely missed of course, with his memories having been obliviated and all, but something told me Queenie wouldn't stay away for long.
"Well, it's worth a shot. Are you sure you can't come with me? I saw the edits you made to my manuscript, it would be a lot better with you there all the time to help me."
"I have a lot of work to do here," I sighed, "Don't worry, as soon as I can get time off, I'll go find you. Stay in touch so I don't have to look so hard. Oh, Tina wanted to thank you by the way."
"What on earth for?"
"You got her her job back. She was so down after she got demoted. Make sure you aren't one of the people she has to track down."
"I will. Quiet life for me from now on. Back to the Ministry, to deliver my manuscript."
"I'll be searching the shelves for it," I smiled brightly, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I hope I get some credit in there."
"You will," Newt chuckled. He looked towards his boat, then back to me, "(Y/n) I feel like I should say this before we're seperated again. I'm in love with you. I've been in love with you since we would hide out and save small animals in Hogwarts-"
I gripped the collar of Newt's coat and pulled him down to my height, pressing my lips against his. It was glorious, and worth the wait. Even if both of us were inexperienced and awkward. I wanted it to last forever, and I felt like it would, until the ship honked, signaling a last warning.
"I love you too," I whispered, giving him a small push, "Now go, your book won't publish itself."
"Right," Newt began to walk towards the ship, pausing and running back to me a few seconds later, "Sorry, um, how would you like me to give you your copy in person."
I laughed, sniffling. He wasn't making this goodbye ay easier, "I'd love that. Goodbye Newt. Pickett."
Pickett poked his head out of Newt's pocket. Giving me a wave. With the final round of goodbyes, I watched Newt board his ship. A small chill ran over me. I wrapped my scarf tighter around my neck, running the soft fabric between my fingers.
Blue and bronze, Ravenclaw colors. Newt had been wearing his Hufflepuff scarf as well. It was instinctual for both of us to show off our school pride. Even if Newt did get expelled.
"(Y/n), I knew you would be here," Queenie ran up to me, a small bag in her hands, "Tina told me you were saying goodbye. Look, I know what you're thinking. Yes, I did. I know I should have, but I did, and it was amazing. I got you something."
Queenie held out a small roll shaped like a Niffler, "He remembers?"
"He does! Don't think like that, you have Newt, I had to go out and get me a man."
"Queenie you know that America is strict about No-Maj wizard relationships," I sighed.
"Not even going to deny that you're in love with him?" Queenie ignored what I said, "That's some mighty fine proof right there."
"Okay Queenie," I giggled, "I do love him alright? And he loves me back. Is that what you wanted to hear?"
"Yes! Oh wait until Teen finds out, she'll be so happy. I know she made a fuss about him being a criminal but she does like you two together and-"
"Queenie, calm down," I prompted, "He just left for England, don't get ahead of yourself."
"Like distance has stopped you two from meeting before. Love finds a way, whether you think it will or not. I'm not trying to be cheesy geez."
"Goodness Queenie, I thought you had trouble reading Brit's minds?"
