You Belong With Me (Sequel to Teardrops on my Guitar)

Lafayette's P.O.V.

Hercules sat in the living room of our shared dorm when his phone rang. I was in the kitchen, which had a clear view of the living room. I heard him talking to her; Elizabeth. Elizabeth and him have been dating for a few years now, and things were getting rough. In the few years they have been dating, I've found it harder to resist the urge to press our lips together and claim him as my own. My love for him has only grown, and I just wished he could see how much I loved him.

I was always there for him, and she never is. I sighed, pulling out my earbuds. It was a typical Tuesday night; I was in the kitchen, making dinner and listening to the kind of music Elizabeth always hated, and Hercules was either working, arguing with her, it watching TV while he waited for me to finish.

I sighed, realizing how much I was longing for him to wrap his arms around me from behind, resting his head on my shoulder and kissing my neck as I cooked. It would be perfect.

We were in college now, almost getting ready to leave; one more year to go. I had one more year to get Hercules to date me instead of her.

I sighed. It sounded selfish. I was being selfish. I wanted him for my own happiness, but what about his? Then again, I could see how unhappy he was with her. He hadn't smiled a genuine smile in a while, ever since she brought him down.

I heard parts of their conversation. She was upset, going off about something someone had said. Something along the lines of the fact that she didn't get his humour like I did. It was pretty fucking pathetic if you asked me.

I went back to stirring my cheese sauce; I was making macaroni and cheese. I got to thinking, however, Elizabeth would never know Hercules' story like I do. I know there's more to it than 'college football champion'. I knew that although he played, he really didn't like football. He preferred tailoring and dress design.

I knew that even though he was a friendly person who anyone felt like they could trust, he was actually very shy, and very self conscious.

It angered me that she claimed she knew him when she really didn't. She knew nothing. She flirted with every guy she came along with, and has tried getting into my pants a few times. Of course, Hercules doesn't believe me when I tell him about it. In his eyes, she's an angel.

Hercules was pacing the living room, phone to his ear, his other hand moving wildly as he explained something. I hated seeing him this way. I hated seeing him with her. I wish he could realize how much I would treat him better. How much more I would love him.

~A few days later~

I sighed, walking out of school. Hercules was waiting outside with Elizabeth clinging to him. I groaned inwardly at the sight, feeling the familiar pang of jealousy spread through my body.

Elizabeth wore a short skirt and a quarter sleeve crop top with six inch high heels and white stockings. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail.

I, on the other hand, wore a plain navy blue T-shirt with black skinny jeans and black Converse. My hair was also pulled into a ponytail, except the baby hairs that didn't want to.

I could see why Hercules would rather have her. She was much more attractive than I, more popular, and more wealthier.

I watched as she whispered something in Herc's ear, and he nodded. She left his side, walking over to another guy, getting in the other man's car.

I looked at him curiously. "He's helping her with her homework." He grumbled, noticing my look of confusion. I nodded, humming slightly in response. We walked down the street, to the coffee shop just off campus.

I smiled. This is how it was meant to be. Me walking the streets with him and his worn-out jeans. Laughing next to him as he told jokes about people at school, about teachers, about schoolwork, maybe throwing in an inappropriate remark every once in a while. We sat down on a park bench after getting our coffees, and I couldn't help thinking to myself,

'Hey, isn't this easy?'

He smiled. God his smile. He could light up this whole town. I missed his smile. Like I said, I hadn't seen it since she brought him down. What's he doing with a girl like that anyways?

"Tonight's the game. You'll be there, right?" I nodded. "Of course I will, Hercules. I'll always be there for you." I blushed faintly at my own words, but he just nodded, unfazed. His reaction caused my heart to sink.

"Are you okay, Hercules...? You seem.... How you say... Down...?"

He just shook his head. "I'm fine."

I sighed. I knew him better than that, but I knew I should probably let it go.

"Alright. But if you need me, I'll be in the bleachers for tonight's game." He chuckled and I winked at him, but his smile faded when Elizabeth's car pulled up. "Well, that's my ride." He said, and I nodded. He got in the expensive looking car, and I sighed as it drove off. He just wasn't the same with her...

~Time skip to the game because  I'm a lazy shit~

I sat in the bleachers, cheering with everyone else as Hercules scored the final points; and won the game. Elizabeth ran up to him, her blonde hair swaying as he spun her around and kissed her. I suddenly stopped cheering. My heart sank. I wish I were her.

She beamed, embracing her boyfriend, congratulating him.

Eventually, everyone had filed out of the bleachers except me. I didn't feel like moving. My heart ached and I longed for Hercules' touch. I wish he were mine. I sat on the bleachers, daydreaming about the day when he would realize that what he was looking for has been here the whole time.

~time skip to later, in the middle of the night~

I heard a knock on my door. I couldn't sleep, so I guessed whoever it was couldn't either. "Come in." Hercules slowly opened the door, almost on the verge of tears.

I bit my lip, sitting up and turning on my lamp beside my bed. "What's wrong...?" I asked the bigger male, who stood awkwardly in the door.

I patted the bed next to me and he sat down, eyes filling with tears.

"Hercules? What's on your mind?"

He sighed, wiping his eyes. "I... I d-didn't mean to w-wake you...."

I shook my head. "You didn't. What's up?"

He fidgeted with his hands, inhaling shakily. "I... I guess I j-just got a l-little h-homesick..." he breathed out, and I nodded, wrapping my arm around him and rubbing his shoulder.

"It's alright, mon che-" I cut myself off before letting it slip.
"-ami..."

That was close...

"It's alright Hercules. I'm sure we've all been there once or twice. I get homesick a lot too." He nodded, wiping his eyes.

I smiled slightly, thinking of a way to make him laugh.

"Hey. This place isn't so bad.. Remember that time John 'accidentally' got drunk? And he flirted with the turtle for, like, two hours straight?" Hercules chuckled, remembering the memory of John. It was pretty funny. (hey I'll make a deal with you guys. If we can get this chapter to ten votes I'll do this as a One-Shot :3)

I smiled, embracing my best friend, happy that he was feeling at least a little better. "Or that time Jefferson got in trouble for bringing macaroni and cheese to class?" Hercules nodded, laughing now.

I beamed. He came to me in the middle of the night. I was the one to make him laugh, even when he was about to cry.

I tried to think of another embarrassing moment with our friends. "How about that one time when Alexander and Samuel Seabury got in a debate on the Continental Congress?" Hercules laughed harder. "Okay, that was just plain hilarious." He said between laughs.

"Or the one time we caught Alex dancing with a mop?"

Hercules laid back, holding his stomach. I giggled too, the sight of Alexander shaking a mop and dancing with it was fucking hilarious, and a little scary too.

"See? New York isn't too bad. We have our friends who have absolutely no dignity and do stupid things in public for our enjoyment." Hercules recovered from his fit of laughter, nodding. "Thank you, Lafayette." He smiled to me, and I nodded.

"Of course Hercules. Anytime. I'm always a moment away."

~Time skip to about a week~

I sighed, getting out of my bed to sit on the couch. I walked out to the living area, seeing Hercules pacing back and forth, on the phone, arguing with Elizabeth again. I sighed. This had to end.

I set a hand on Hercules shoulder, causing him to jump and turn to me. "We need to talk, Mon ami..." He looked confused but said goodbye to Elizabeth quickly, looking fearful after hanging up. It was only then that I realized it was two in the morning.

"What is it Laf?" He asked me, and I sat down on the couch, crossing my legs underneath me. I patted the spot next to me and he sat down as well.

"Yes?" He asked, slightly concerned.

"I'm worried about you mon ami..." I looked up at the ceiling briefly before looking back at him.

"Why, Laf? I'm fine..." He was watching me and I sighed. There was one lamp on, so I could see him, but it was still dark.

"You and Elizabeth.... You guys are fighting so much... Mon ami... I.... I really care about you... And... I don't want you dwelling on someone like... Like her..." I bit my lip after saying the words, inhaling deeply.

He looked shocked, so I continued.

"I just... I don't think she's right for you... You haven't smiled genuinely in a while, Mon ami.... I'm worried. I don't like the fact that she's bringing you down so much. I know it's not really in my place to tell you, but.... All the fighting and the yelling and... I can tell your not happy with her... I can tell you don't love her... Why keep her, Mon ami?" He sighed.

"I guess you're right Laf. I guess I didn't see it. I guess the fighting was so normal I didn't think about it... Thank you, for opening my eyes, Laf." I nodded. "Anything for my best friend."

The words pained me. Best friend. I wanted more than that. He got out his phone, calling Elizabeth. He put it on speaker and I gave him a double thumbs up.

He smiled before biting his lip.

"Hercules? Come to apologize for giving your little Frenchman more attention than me?"

My eyes widened, and I looked to Hercules.

"No, Elizabeth. That's not what I wanted to do."

"So why are you calling?"

"Elizabeth. I... I don't want to date you anymore... I feel... I feel as though we fight too much and that's never going to change. I'm looking for someone who will treat me better. Good bye, Elizabeth."

Hercules hung up right after that, of course we still heard the string of curse words that came from the woman's mouth.

I sighed. "Hercules..." He looked at me.

"I feel.... I feel like I want to get this off my chest."

He cocked an eyebrow at me, confused.

"You see...." I continued, "I... I really like you Hercules... And... I don't want to be someone to fall back on... And you've just been in a break up.... But... I've always loved you... Since before Elizabeth... And I was always jealous of her... Because she had you and I didn't... It ate me up inside.... But... I just... Now that you're not with her.... I guess I just assumed.... It'd be okay.... I'm sorry it's just.... How I feel about-" He clearly had enough of my ranting, because he cut me off with a kiss. I was surprised at first, but I soon melted into the kiss. It was a magical kiss, deep and passionate, maybe a little awkward but it was perfect.

I pulled back after a while. "Hercules..."

"Lafayette. I realized that what I needed was with me the whole time. You were the one to make me laugh when I was on the verge of tears. You were the one who was always there for me. You're the one who understands me. The one who knows my story more than anyone else. I finally woke up and now I can see that I belong with you."

I smiled, tears of joy falling from my eyes. "Hercules... I love you so much...." He beamed. "I love you too, Lafayette."

He kissed me again, this time more desperate, less awkward then the last. I pulled back soon and he just smiled.

"Lafayette?"

"Oui, Mon Cher?"

"Will you be my boyfriend, Darling?"

I beamed. "Of course, Mon amour."

He smiled widely before kissing my passionately again.

And now you see that you belong with me...
