Teardrops on my Guitar
Lafayette's P.O.V.
I opened my locker, putting some of my textbooks I wouldn't need in it and taking out some I would.
Hercules leaned against the locker next to me. "You goin' to the game on Friday?" He questioned, looking into my locker.
"Well, I was thinking about it. Why?" I looked at him, smiling.
"No reason." He was quiet for a moment, watching me as I shut my locker with the books I needed. "Oh, I met this girl." He smiled and I gave him a confused look. "I'll tell you about her during lunch. She's amazing."
I bit my lip, nodding to him.
"I bet she is..." I muttered as he walked away, perfectly; the kind of flawless I wished I could be.
I sighed, wiping the tear that fell onto my cheek off.
Come on Laf... It's High School... It's not like their gonna get married....
I didn't know the girl and I already hated her.
~Time skip to lunch~
I sat down at our regular table, the one our squad always sat at. I looked between Alex and Laurens, setting my lunch tray on the table.
"Where's Hercules?" I asked the two, and John pointed to a different table; one filled with cheerleaders. I saw him with his arm around one I recognized as Elizabeth... I thought hard as I tried to remember her last name. It started with an 'S'..... Uhm... Sand- Saunders? No, Sanders! Elizabeth Sanders.
She had long curly blonde hair and tanned skin, and she was in her Cheer uniform. If she was who Herc was talking about, he was right. She was beautiful. I sat down, feeling tears in my eyes as I looked down at my plate, picking up my fork and poking at the 'food' that sat on it. I didn't feel hungry.
John noticed this and looked at me. "Laf?" He asked, looking concerned. I shrugged, pushing my tray away and getting up. "I'm going to the bathroom." I decided, walking away from the two. I walked into the bathroom, sinking down onto the floor. I set my head in between my knees, sighing softly and holding back tears.
Why couldn't he see? Why couldn't he see that I couldn't breathe whenever I saw him? Why can't he see my smiles are fake? Why couldn't he see what we could be; what we were meant to be? Why can't he just see that I loved him? Now he's off with Elizabeth. I wonder if he knows he's all I think about at night.
He was the song I sang in the car without knowing why. He was the time taken up, but there's never enough. He was the thing that kept me wishing on a star. He was the only one who and enough of my heart to break it. He was all I needed to fall into.
And Elizabeth... She was beautiful; amazing enough to consume all of his thoughts. She better know how lucky she is. She has everything I have to live without. She better treat him right; give him all her love. Look into his dark, beautiful eyes and know how lucky she was that she was the one who got to stand by his side, when so many have tried. If she mistreated him...
I got up, looking in the mirror. I didn't realize I was crying until now. Merde. My eyes were red and puffy, and there was no doubt I'd be asked what happened. Oh well, I guess. I walked back into the lunchroom, sitting down. Hopefully I could make it through the rest of the day.
~Time skup to the end of the day. Lafayette is at his locker~
I sighed, slowly putting all my books away. I couldn't wait to get home and play my guitar. It always helped me when I was stressed or upset.
Hercules leaned against the locker once more. This time, Elizabeth stood at his side. "Laf." I turned to look at him, then to her, then back to my locker, humming a questioning response.
"You know how I was talking about the girl I met earlier?" I looked to him, slamming my locker door shut.
"You mean the girl you said you'd tell me about at lunch but then ditched me to hang out with your new girlfriend you just met instead of your best friend you've known for years? How could I forget." I spat this out bitterly, looking back to my locker.
His expression turned from the happiness he had earlier to hurt. "Laf... I'm sorry..." I nodded. "Thank you Hercules. Now would you care to introduce me to your new significant other?" I turned to Elizabeth.
"Oh Uhm... Right. Lafayette, this is Elizabeth. Elizabeth, babe, this is my best friend Lafayette." His words broke my heart, but I decided to give her a little 'test'. I held out my hand, and she took it to shake, not expecting me to bend over, kissing her knuckles. "Enchanté, Mademoiselle Elizabeth." I spoke softly, and she giggled and blushed. "Merci, Lafayette. Ravi de vous rencontrer également, monsieur." I smiled, seeing she knew French. Hercules looked confused and slightly angered at my actions. I realized I was still holding her hand, and she realized it too, but didn't pull away.
She definitely wasn't right for my Hercules.
I dropped her hand quickly. "Well. I must be going then, mes amis. Herc, you'll text me, oui?"
He nodded. "Of course Laffy Taffy." I blushed faintly at the nickname, walking out of the school building. I got into my car, driving home alone. I went immediately up to my room, carefully grabbing my guitar off of its place on the wall. I sat on my bed, holding it on my lap and strumming the strings with my guitar pick. I wasn't going to any tune in particular, just playing to think.
Tears fell from my eyes, down my cheeks, and onto my guitar. I eventually let my arm drop, sobbing into my guitar. I wanted him so badly, and now I had to wait. He was the only one with enough of my heart to break it, and that's exactly what he did.
I wish he'd understand, but for now, I'd stand to the side, and...
...He'd be the reason for the teardrops on my guitar.
