Chapter 53

"Mr. Goyle, please get your friends to the hospital wing with the help of Mr. and Mr. Weasley," said Umbridge sweetly, and then turned to me again. "Miss Hooper, follow me."

I have no idea why I blurted out that it was me. All I knew was that I couldn't stand the two people that I loved so much being hurt, knowing what that horrible woman would do to them for detention.

I couldn't bear the thought of them being tortured like that, even if it meant taking the blame myself; specially now that they had been trying to punish Malfoy just because I was too weak to defend myself in the first place.

I tried to avoid Fred and George's gaze as I walked towards Umbridge and followed her out of the corridor and all the way up to her office.

I felt sick as I entered it; not because of all the pink and the kitten, but because it belonged to her.

"Take a seat, please," she said, pointing at a chair and desk. When I sat down quietly, she then placed a parchment and a quill before me.

"What do you want me to write?" I asked wearily, knowing exactly what was awaiting me.

"I want you to write, 'the guilty deserve to be punished.'"

"Where's the ink?" I asked, trying to act oblivious, so she wouldn't get suspicious about me.

I had to keep my identity secret from her; as long as I could.

"Oh, you won't be needing any," said Umbridge, sitting behind her own desk. "Now write ahead."

Gulping in fear, I touched the parchment with the quill, glancing at the back of my clean hand one last time before writing, 'the guilty deserve to be punished.'

The moment I wrote down the words, I winced in pain as they were cut on the back of my hand.

I threw a quick glare at her, before writing again and again, the words cutting through deeper each time that I did.

Near the end, my hand was sore and had gotten numb to the pain when Umbridge walked towards me and took my bleeding hand in hers, observing it calmly.

"I think that would've taught you, don't you agree, Miss Hooper?" she asked me with a sweet smile and in return I only glared up at her.

When I left her office, I wasn't in the mood to go back to the common room and face Fred and George, not wanting to argue with them on the matter anymore.

So I walked around the castle, through the deserted halls and empty corridors. I had to dodge Peeves at some point, and came upon Nearly Headless Nick once, who bowed his head at me slightly as in to say goodnight.

I don't know how long I've been strolling around and I didn't know what time it was, but then I decided to go by the Black Lake, on my usual spot which I went to all the time last year.

But when I neared it, where I always used to lean against the tree, I saw Fred alone, with a box next to him as he stared into the lake.

"What are you doing here?" I asked and his head shot up at my voice.

"Waiting for you," he answered with a smile.

"How did you know I'd come here?" I asked, sitting down next to him.

"You always came here," he said softly. "I've been sitting here for ages. I was starting to think that you went back to the common room again."

      "But I didn't," I shrugged with a smile.

"No, you're here," he said, throwing an arm around my shoulder and bending my head towards him, placing a gentle kiss on my temple.

"Anyway," he started, pulling away and taking the box beside him in his hands, opening it. "I went to the kitchen and got you some chocolate chip cookies. You didn't have anything for dinner and well... you're always hungry."

He said teasingly and I chuckled, taking the box from him. I took one cookie myself and handed another to him, and we both started eating them in silence, staring at the lake.

But I was just about to take another one out of the box that Fred frowned, snatching my hand in his and staring at it.

"What the heck is this!?" his eyes widened, reading what had been cut on it. I pulled my hand back and looked away. "Did that horrible woman did this to you!?"

"Please tell me you're not going to go and try to jinx her as well," I groaned playfully.

"You bet your arse I am!" he said,
but when he caught me giving him a look, he sighed. "This is all my fault."

"No," I shook my head, looking at him. "Don't say that, Fred. It was Malfoy."

"No... I mean... your hand..." he frowned. "You shouldn't have lied for us. It shouldn't have been you."

"Meh," I shrugged with a grin. "At least now I have a personal reason to hate them. I mean... I always hated Umbridge," I said. "But I never thought I would dislike Malfoy this much."

     "Why?"

"Because I used to have a crush on him when I was younger, when reading the books."

"What!?" Fred exclaimed, his eyes widening and I chuckled. "What about me!?"

"Well, you and George were my favorites after Sirius," I explained with a grin. "But Draco Malfoy had lots of fangirls, including me."

"Fangirls?" he repeated, snorting in laughter.

"I know," I said, chuckling lightly. "But things have changed now, hasn't it? This is real life..."

"Yeah..." Fred mused, his glance falling on my hurt knuckle again.

He then took my hand in his, holding it, and I smiled. His hand was way warmer than mine, which was freezing.

"Does it still hurt?" he asked softly, looking up at me.

      "Not much," I shrugged.

"How about now?" he said playfully, raising my hand towards his lips and placing a gentle kiss on it.

I laughed, taking my hand away. "You're too cheesy, Weasley."

"Hey, that rhymed!" he said excitedly and then repeated to himself under his breath, "Cheesy Weasley... I like it."

I chuckled again and shook my head, leaning forward and kissing him lightly on his lips. "You're an idiot."
