chapter 1 - It Wasn't Me
Georgia Miller had her twin daughters, Carolina and Virginia, when she was their age, 15. So they got the sex talk when they were only seven. But it wasn't your typical birds and bees crap. Then again, there's not much typical about their mother.
"Sex. Men want it. And they think you should give it to 'em. But you should never give anything unless you're gettin' somethin' in return. There are two things you can get from sex with a man. Passion or power. But you better make sure you're gettin' somethin'. Otherwise you're just gettin' screwed. Oh, and use a condom."
Their mother never let her guard down. She was always in control. It was a really effective sex talk. Despite the fact that Carolina had had a boyfriend in the past, both Caro and Ginny were virgins.
A teacher called Carolina and Ginny out of class during school. "Virginia and Carolina Miller. Can I talk to you in the hall for a minute?" Ginny stood, walking awkwardly out of class. Carolina was annoyed with being called out and getting attention from others around her because they always looked at her weirdly and like she could attack them. Carolina stood, walking toward the door, holding up her hand to flip the class off behind her, before walking out of class to stand with Ginny and the teacher. "Virginia... Carolina..."
"It's Ginny," Ginny told her.
"Your stepfather's been in an accident," the teacher explained. "Your mom's on her way here with your brother. I'm so sorry, girls. He didn't make it."
The teacher embraced both girls. Ginny looked too numb to process, and Carolina was confused but looked like she really couldn't give a shit.
✯
The Millers were at the funeral for the deceased.
Carolina glared at Kenny in his coffin, before overhearing older women gossiping nearby.
Woman 1 shook her head. "Poor Amber Lynn. I mean, I know they had their problems with the divorce, but still, she must be devastated." Carolina looked toward the gossiping women. Ginny and Austin walked up beside Carolina. Ginny had her arm around Austin. Carolina placed a hand on Austin's shoulder. "Have you see the new wife? Who shows that much cleavage at a funeral? And look at that daughter of hers. Who wears a leather jacket to a funeral? Tacky."
"Careful," Woman 2 told her. "That was the girl who was with Noah Wilkins. She was the one involved in that horrible affair and she hasn't been stable since. Amber said Kenny told her that she had a lot of aggression issues since then."
Carolina was fed up, walking past the gossiping women, making sure she purposely bumped into them. "Oops. Excuse me. I tripped."
Carolina smirked, walking away.
Georgia was fake crying. "Kenny was the best. The best. After being a single mother for so long, he was like a godsend. And he was wonderful with Carolina, Virginia and Austin. He treated 'em like his very own."
Carolina couldn't help but scoff and roll her eyes.
Amber Lynn was gossiping with Woman 1 from earlier. "Well, they weren't his own, yet they're gettin' all his money. Giving poor Davey's inheritance to that... trash. He was a bastard."
Georgia continued to put on her act. "He was a generous angel, and I can't believe he's gone."
Passion, power, men, sex. The girls would take her word for it. She was the expert. But the twins were nothing like their mother, and nothing like each other.
Carolina walked up to Georgia.
"How was I?" Georgia asked.
"Almost believable," Carolina answered. "About as believable as last time something like this happened."
Georgia gave her a look, tilting her head, smirking slightly. "Now, Caro..."
Carolina shrugged. "Whatever."
Georgia smiled, wrapping an arm around Carolina as they walked away.
✯
The Millers were driving down the road with the top of the convertible down on their way to their new town to live in, while Ginny was driving. Georgia was relaxed in the passenger seat, feet up on the dashboard. Carolina was in the backseat with Austin, leaning back in her seat, closing her eyes and feeling the freedom of the open road.
"It Wasn't Me" was playing from the radio.
Carolina was relaxing enough to be able to gently rap Ricardo Ducent's part. "How can you give your woman access to your villa? / Trespass and a-witness while you cling to your pillow / You better watch your back before she turn into a killer / Let's review the situation that you caught up in a / To be a true player you have to know how to play / If she stay a night, convince her stay a day / Never admit to a word when she say / And if she claim, ah, you tell her, baby, no way."
Georgia smiled at Carolina, relieved to see her a little more relaxed again, going on with Shaggy's part. "But she caught me on the counter."
Austin chimed in. "It wasn't me."
Georgia looked back at Austin, bobbing her head. "Saw me bangin' on the sofa."
Austin bobbed his head. "It wasn't me."
Ginny was not impressed or amused by the three of them, annoyed.
Georgia leaned her head back against her seat. "I even had her in the shower."
Austin reached out to point at Carolina. "It wasn't me."
Carolina pointed her finger against Austin's finger as both smiled.
Georgia did a little dance. "She even caught me on camera."
Carolina reached out to tickle Austin lightly when he went to say "It was--"
Austin laughed because of Carolina tickling him.
Ginny turned the radio off.
"Hey!" Georgia complained.
"I'm sorry, do you two think this song's appropriate for the nine year old in the back?" Ginny asked.
"Oh, please," Georgia said. "He doesn't understand any of it. Austin, what's this song about?"
"Doing it on the bathroom floor, getting caught and lying so you don't get in trouble," Austin answered, not missing a beat.
Georgia and Carolina both had an 'oops' look.
Ginny gave Georgia and Carolina an 'I told you so' smug smirk.
Georgia glanced back at Austin, smiling. "Go back to your Harry Potter game."
"What are you wearing?" Ginny asked. "You look like Vanessa Hudgens at Rydell High."
"The fact that your Rizzo is Vanessa and not Stockard is literally everything that's wrong with your generation," Georgia told them.
"Stockard is great, okay?" Ginny asked. "But Vanessa surprised everyone."
Carolina shrugged. "Stockard will always be Rizzo, since I watched Grease on repeat literally every day when I was between the ages of 5 and 10, but I'll give Vanessa this. She found out her father died before going live like that and still pulled through. Props to her for that."
"All right," Georgia agreed, putting out her foot to show the girls her toenail polish. "You like?"
"You look like you have gangrene," Ginny told her.
Georgia put her foot back, looking out on her side of the car. "You're gonna like Massachusetts. It's very patriotic. Perfect for a fresh start."
Carolina rested her arm on the car next to her to rest her head against her fist. "You can't get pregnant."
"You know something I don't?" Georgia asked.
"A baby named Massachusetts or Wellsbury?" Carolina asked. "It's child abuse."
Georgia smiled. "Bury is kinda cute."
"Then again, you could do what you did with you, me and Ginny," Carolina told her. "Worked your way up from Georgia through the Carolinas to Virginia. If you go up one more, you hit Maryland. You're not gonna name a baby Maryland, right?"
"Yeah, that's not happening," Georgia answered.
"You said we'd be here for a while, right, Mom?" Austin asked. "Just the four of us?"
"Remember that road trip Kenny took us on to the Great Basin Desert?" Georgia asked.
"Yeah," Austin answered. "It went on and on and on and on."
"Well, Mama's datin' life is like that desert," Georgia told them. "Nothin' in sight as far as the eye can see."
"There was nothin' in that desert," Austin stated.
Georgia gasped a laugh. "Oh, there was nothin' in that desert."
"I'll believe it when I see it," Ginny replied bitterly.
Georgia smiled. "You're crabby today!"
"What's wrong?" Carolina asked.
Ginny shrugged. "I'm sad. I'm a human having an emotion. Am I allowed to be sad? Not everyone can lock away emotions and become totally numb like you, Caro."
"Don't you start," Carolina told her.
"And why are you sad?" Georgia asked. "You hated Texas."
"Maybe I miss Kenny," Ginny said.
"You hated Kenny," Georgia told her.
Carolina scoffed. "We all did."
✯
At a gas station, Austin was sleeping in the backseat of the car, while Ginny was pumping gas into the tank. Carolina walked outside with snacks while Georgia was inside paying for gas.
A police car drove up to the gas station, driving past Ginny and Carolina, glancing out at them, pulling over.
Georgia walked outside, seeing the officer.
The officer got out of his car, walking past Ginny and Carolina with a glare as he saw the two mixed teenage girls outside the car with their little brother inside.
Georgia walked closer nervously, but put on a flirting tone to distract the officer away from her daughters. "Hi, Mr. Officer!"
The officer walked inside.
"Was that racist?" Ginny asked.
"That was racist," Carolina answered. "Guess we're not leaving that bullshit behind in the South."
Ginny looked at Georgia. "What was with you? 'Hi, Mr. Officer'. You sound like a bad porn."
Carolina put the snack bags into the car. Ginny went to put the gas pump back in its holder.
Georgia smiled, walking around the car. "I could use a good pat-down. Been a while."
Carolina rolled her eyes. "Gross. Seriously, just gross. TMI, Mom. We don't need to hear that about our mom."
Georgia laughed.
"Scarring," Ginny agreed. "I'm scarred."
Georgia got into the driver's seat. Carolina got into the passenger seat. Ginny got into the backseat with the sleeping Austin.
✯
Now, the Millers were driving through the town they would call home, Wellsbury, looking around, taking in all the sights.
Carolina was mumbling along with the song on the radio. "Have you ever been fed up with the bullshit / The whole town is too small and you don't fit..."
Georgia noticed that Ginny was trying to hide her smile. "You like it. Ha." She chuckled, speaking in a singsong voice. "You like it."
"It looks like Paul Revere boned a pumpkin spice latte," Ginny critiqued.
Ginny rested her arms on the car, turning her body to look over all the sights of the town.
"Mark my words, we are gonna run this town," Georgia told them.
Carolina tilted her head, looking around. "Run it, burn it to the ground, flee into the night. Same difference."
Georgia saw a poster for the mayor. "Even the politicians are good looking. He looks like a young JFK."
"Like the desert, right?" Ginny asked.
Carolina rolled her eyes.
✯
The Millers stood outside their new house, looking up at the large living space, which was the best they'd ever had.
Georgia smiled. "It's a far cry from the walk up in Houston and the apartment in New Orleans. Look at it."
"It's just ours?" Austin asked excitedly. "Just the four of us?" Georgia nodded. Austin ran toward the house. "I'm picking the biggest bedroom!"
Georgia chuckled, looking back at Carolina and Ginny. "Comin'?"
✯
Carolina was taking hits from a joint behind the moving truck, tossing the joint down when Georgia walked outside.
Georgia saw the joint on the ground, rolling her eyes. "You're supposed to be helping me with moving the boxes inside, not getting high, Caro."
Carolina shrugged. "We're almost done. I can still do it."
"Let me guess, that was the last of your stash," Georgia told her.
"Sadly, yes," Carolina answered. "And now I gotta find out where to get some here in this town." Georgia raised her eyebrows at Carolina in amusement, smirking, placing her hands on her hips. Carolina pretended to act sheepish. "Oh, I mean, that's something I would never do."
Georgia chuckled. "Uh-huh. I'm sure."
Carolina saw a car pull up across the street, and Ellen and Marcus Baker got out of the car.
Ellen looked at Marcus angrily. "I wanna know what the hell you were thinking smoking weed on the side of the road in clear view of everyone. Neighbors, the cops. Seriously, I wanna know what was going through your brain!"
"Well, it's legal now," Marcus pointed out.
Carolina smirked.
"Not for you, it isn't!" Ellen replied, pointing to the house. "You get inside that house. You are grounded." Marcus stared at Ellen for a moment, too high to truly comprehend what was going on. "Acknowledge me, damn it!"
Marcus smiled. "All right, I'm grounded." He walked toward the house, but stopped, turning back to give Ellen a curious look. "Hey, but when's dinner, though? 'Cause I'm really hungry."
Marcus walked inside. Ellen screamed at the top of her lungs, when she saw Carolina and Georgia across the street having seen and heard the conversation. Georgia waved to Ellen.
Ellen smiled nervously, waving back, whispering through clenched teeth. "Oh, shit."
Carolina laughed, turning to Georgia. "Maybe this won't be such a boring town after all."
Georgia smirked. "Oh, honey, you know, with the Millers, nothing is ever boring."
"Well, with Ginny things are definitely boring, but..." Carolina trailed off, looking away, grabbing the box in the moving truck. "Bye."
Carolina walked toward the house to carry the box inside.
