For my twin niece's 5th birthday,
I made a Hello Kitty piñata!!

I've been thinking of making this
kind of piñata for a while.

.

.

First I got the Hello Kitty image
(In this case it's a 'wall cling' I found for $3),
then I traced it with a half inch allowance.

I used 2 foam boards
(Poster board with foam on the inside),
then I got thin poster board
and cut it into strips.

I attached a few plastic cups
on the inside using a glue gun
for support and separation.
Make sure all the cups are the same size,
And make sure someone helps you
so the 2 sides align.

Then I went around and stapled
the strips. Make sure the cups aren't too
far to the edges, or it'll make it hard to staple.
And, use a tool like the end of your scissors
to push down the staples, because the staples
need help going through the foam board.

Push them down as you go,
flipping the piñata over each time.

Btw, learn to open your stapler,
so you can reach some harder areas,
or buy one of those staple guns.

Before you begin to ad tissue,
figure out what shape/size petal you'll use,
and whether you have enough.

And, where you will start, what direction you will go,
where you'll end, and how far apart you'll layer the petals.

Personally, I like using a paint brush.
I apply the glue to the piñata, and
then stick the the petal to it,
using the brush to smooth down
the bottom half of the petal.
Don't smooth down the whole petal.

In fact, try to work the piñata upside down
so the top of the petals are less likely
to stick to the piñata.

Make sure to layer the petals across the openings,
from one strip of cardboard to the next and
to each other.

Since this was the 1st time I did this kind of piñata
I traced around Hello Kitty's individual whiskers.

Tracing, cutting, stapling, then glueing these individual whiskers took more time, and when the tissue was finally on.... You couldn't really notice that I had done anything to those whiskers individually.

So, I recommend just cutting small details like that as a whole. Just cut a curve around all 3 together. Save yourself the time and effort.

As a surprise,
my sis hired Menchie to stop by the class,
bringing yogurt and toppings.

Menchie took pics, hugged the kids,
and even wacked the piñata!

This piñata actually held up really well.
All the kids got to hit HK at least 2 times.

The plastic tie actually broke first,
the piñata hit the ground with barely a dent,
and then we decided to just rip the piñata open.

The kids and us adults had a great time.
