17. Christmas Eve
I reached my house and went directly towards my room, ignoring Olivia’s calls. I packed my things for my way when I heard barks behind me.
[Where were you? Do you have any idea how worried I was? I thought you died.] Mini kept barking.
I put my bag down and crouch. “We are going to my secret place. Right. Now.”
I got up and picked my stuff, running downstairs when Olivia caught me.
“Tori where have you been, everyone was so worried about you-“ I cut her off.
“I need to go somewhere, Olivia.” I flatly said.
She grabbed my arm. “Where are you going? Your brothers are coming home, wait for them.”
“I can’t wait.”
“Okay. When will you be back?” She questioned.
“Tomorrow.”
“But it’s Christmas Eve!” She looked in disbelief.
“Let her go, Olivia.” My grandpa said from behind us.
“I thought you were going to spend this Christmas with us,” Grandma whispered sadly.
Olivia looked confused but said nothing. Letting go of my arm.
“I am not ready, grandma, not yet.” I pleaded.
They nodded and let me go. I’m sure Caleb will tell the details to Olivia later.
There were some messages from Alice and Daniel which I ignored. He kept calling me. Frustrated with him, I turned my phone off and kept walking.
What does he want now, didn’t he have enough from last night?!
[Where are we going?] Mini barked beside me.
“We are going to my cave.”
On my way, I saw people preparing for Christmas Eve. A group of people were singing Christmas songs. I ignored them and walked ahead. People were smiling and buying gifts, everyone looked happy.
Ugh! I hate this and now with a broken heart, it all looked torturing.
I went to a store to get some more stuff; I was in the food section getting chocolates when I saw a little kid struggling to get Ice cream on the top shelf and when he saw me watching he requested.
“Can you grab that for me, Miss? I can’t reach it.” He smiled.
So innocent.
“You want that ice cream so badly?” I questioned.
He bobbed his head, beaming. “Yes, I love it so much.” He exclaimed.
I bent down to his height and whispered. “When you love something so much and know it is out of your reach-“ he cocked his head, blinking at me. “-leave it before it hurts you.” I finished and left the kid standing there looking confused.
[You are mean.] Mini grunted.
“I save that kid from getting a heartache.”
I walked towards the counter and sighed in frustration when I saw the line. I stood there waiting for my turn when I heard my name called by a high-pitched voice.
“Tori.” I turned my head slowly and saw Samantha standing there. I narrowed my eyes at her.
“Hey, I thought it was you.” She gave me a fake smile. “How was your date last night?”
How the hell did she know abo-
Of course. Daniel.
“Oh! It was so wonderful, like a dream come true.” I sighed dreamily, batting my eyelashes.
“What?” Her smile turned into a grimace.
“Would you like to know the deeds?” I wiggled my brows suggestively.
“No, thanks.” She scowled.
[Want me to bite her?] Mini glowered. Samantha looked at Mini, and her eyes widened in fear.
“I ah-need to go, bye.” She dashed away.
[Ha! Coward!] Mini barked behind her.
*~*~*~*~*
The sun almost sat down when we reached the cave. I looked around it everything seemed the same here. I turned on the lantern and set the blankets I brought on the ground.
I sat there, finding a comfortable position, leaning my back against the cave wall. Mini jumped on my lap, and we sat there in silence. I heard only the sounds of wind blowing.
[Why are we here?] She asked, looking at me with her enormous eyes.
“We are here because it’s Christmas Eve,” I said, patting her head. “When I moved here after my parents’ death, I was invited by Alice to her house on Christmas Eve and I ran away from her house because I got jealous by the love she got from her parents.”
“I aimlessly ran and ran until I got tired and found this cave.” I looked around the cave where I spend my Christmas Eve. “Since then every Christmas Eve I came here and spend the entire night sleeping.”
[Didn’t you feel alone?] Mini grunted sadly.
“I did but after getting a good night's sleep, I forgot about everything in the morning.” I chuckled at my stupidity.
[Weren’t you scared?]
“I was hella scared when I was here first, then it became a tradition for me to come here every year.” I stroke Mini and remembered something.
“After years of spending my Christmas Eve here, one night when I woke up, I found my favorite chocolate beside me. I was fourteen.”
[How?] Mini tensed.
I chuckled. “I don’t know. I thought that Santa might have given it to me but Santa’s aren’t real.” I rolled my eyes.
[Then who was it?] Mini asked, tilting her head.
I shrugged. “Next year same thing happened, so after that year I stayed up all night to see who it was but no one came.”
[Did you get it after that?]
I shook my head. “No, I got it for two years only. I thought maybe I might have done something good in those years.”
[That’s creepy.] Mini shivered.
I laughed. “I know.”
[Do you think whoever it was will come tonight?] I shrugged.
After that I laid down, cuddling with Mini. Closing my eyes, I dozed off.
*~*~*~*~*
Mini licked and nudged her head, waking me up. I groaned and turned my head.
[I heard something outside!]
“It may be a squirrel. Now go to sleep,” I mumbled.
[Squirrels don’t come out until spring bit*h, wake up.] She pulled my hair.
“Ouch! Mini st-“ I halted when I heard something. I jolted up and looked around.
“Did you hear that?” I whispered, freaking out.
[Of course, I heard it. That’s why I woke you up, twat.] Mini rolled her eyes.
We heard more cracking sounds of a branch. Mini jumped in my lap, snuggling into me, shaking.
[Someone’s out there.]
“But no one knows about this place. I told no one.” I tried to look outside.
[Do you think it’s the chocolate guy?]
I tensed at that. “But it’s been years.”
[Maybe, he is here to check you.]
“Go outside and see who it is.” I shooed Mini out.
She narrowed her eyes at me. [No way, he came here for you, not me.]
I glared. “Listen here. You are my pet and it is your job to save me from danger.”
She rolled her eyes. [I will not die because of your stupidity.]
I was about to scold her but stopped when I saw a light coming towards our way.
[Shit! Do something, he is coming here.] She hid behind me.
I searched around for my things to see if I could use something as a weapon, but found nothing.
“I have nothing!” I screamed. I felt my heart pounding.
The light came closer, making my eyes go wide. “We are going to die tonight.”
Mini came from behind me, growling. [Not on my watch!]
“Mini my hero!” I cheered her.
She ran outside and bite whoever it was, making him yell in pain.
Wait a second... That sounds familiar.
