1. From the beginning
I hate snow,
I hate Christmas,
I hate winters.
I Victoria Bell Jones loathe this season.
You must wonder why? There are numerous reasons:
1) It is a challenge to shower in this freezing weather and when you run out of hot water, BOOM! You’re in hell, except that it’s frozen.
If it was in my hands, I’d never shower in winter but I don’t want to kill my colleagues with stink.
2) In winter you can’t eat anything without heating it and for a lazy a** person like me, it’s tiring to heat everything before you eat.
3) You have to wake up early in freezing weather to go to work. If you want to stay in your warm blanket all day, say hello to the streets baby!
4) It feels like time pauses in winter, there is no energy out there. Everyone becomes slow and lazy and I’m an indolent person.
5) Everything gets covered in snow, because of that, it’s so hard to even get out of the house and see outside. White is my least favorite color.
Oh! And don’t get me started on pee!
6) If you own a dog you’d know what I must be feeling. It’s so hard to bathe them and to walk them every night in cold it’s ugh! And my poor Mini, I can’t imprison her like Rapunzel.
7) The roads become slippery because of the stupid weather, so you have to drive cautiously and if not; you are giving an invitation to the Angels of death.
8) Then comes Christmas. I was known as Mrs. Grinch in high school because of a lack of holiday spirit.
I used to love this season when I was a kid, but because of some incidents that occurred, I started hating it.
Last, I DESPISE WINTERS because right now, I’m stuck in my stupid car, which is buried deep in snow in the middle of nowhere.
How did I get here? Let me start from the beginning.
*~*~*~*~*
I was peacefully lying on my bed, covered with my warmest blanket, drinking hot chocolate and watching my favorite rom-com ‘When in Rome’ in my cozy little apartment with Mini by my side.
Josh Duhamel is Love!
I don’t even have words to describe him. I’m sure everyone’s already aware of his hotness.
My phone cut my dreams of marrying Josh Duhamel off blaring.
Arg! Who dare to ruin my wedding!
I searched for my phone from where it was ringing and saw it at the side table.
Shit! I have to leave my comfort zone to pick it.
I reached out to Mini, who was busy licking Josh Duhamel’s face. We have the same taste in men.
Scratching her ears, I cheered playfully. “Fetch my phone, you precious little Mini.”
“Bow.” [No.]
“Someone has to pick it, so go now and be a good girl.” I continued rubbing her.
[It’s your phone, you pick it.] She grunted.
Rolling my eyes, I peered at the phone, which was still ringing. My colleagues have been inviting me to the Pre-Christmas party our office is organizing, maybe it’s them. I ignored it.
Me going to a Christmas party? As if.
My phone kept ringing for a while, then stopped and I smiled.
Time to get to my wedding... I-eh mean my movie.
I was deeply focused on my movie, even though I’ve watched it so many times before, every time I see it, I felt the same emotions again and again. Beth running away from her wedding scene was going on when my phone blast again.
Son of a bi-
“What?!” I yelled without seeing who it was.
“Hello to you to sister.” My brother’s sarcastic voice came.
“What do you want? You are ruining my movie, Caleb.” I flatly said.
“Lemme guess, When in Rome.” He knew it’s my favorite movie.
I nodded, realizing he wasn’t watching. “Yes, now hurry, Beth is running away!” I exclaimed.
“Ok ok... I’m going to grandpas to celebrate Christmas.”
“Good for you, now bye.”
“Wait!”
“What?” I groaned.
“I’m bringing my fiancée with me...”
“You got engaged?!” I squealed, making Mini jump. She watched me for a moment, then got back to licking Josh.
I didn’t know he even had a girlfriend!
“Yeah, I just proposed to her.” He sounded pleased.
“And she said yes? Poor girl. Is she blind or something?” I teased.
“Shut up,” he chuckled, “Owen’s already there.”
Owen is my younger brother; he is at University here in Hartford, the same where I went, we lived in the same city so we get together every often.
“So...” I knew what he was trying to do, but I acted obliviously.
“I want you there too.”
“Ha! Nice joke Caleb.” I fake laughed.
I haven’t been to my hometown for years. After I came to study in Hartford, I stayed here and never went back. That place reminds me of the memories I’ve been avoiding.
“Please, can’t you be there? For me...” He pleaded.
Caleb’s my older brother, and after our parents’ death, he took responsibility for me and Owen. He was there with us at every step of our life, supporting us.
I can’t be selfish. This is the first time he is bringing any girl home and he wants me there.
I debated with myself, listing the pros and cons, then said yes to him and he was ecstatic. I told him I’ll leave tomorrow and will be there till evening.
Redfield, my small hometown in Owego County, is around four hours drive away from Hartford. So the next day I drove to it.
*~*~*~*~*
I hated driving in winter because of the reasons I already mentioned above. The road was slippery, so I drove slowly. It might take me six to seven hours to get there and I wasn’t in a rush, either. I’m twenty-five, single, and too young to die.
I was driving carefully, with Mini sitting in the passenger seat. I watched her sleep soundlessly, with no worries in the world.
Lucky girl.
Out of the blue, a deer came in front of my car and I - the girl full of humanity - tried to save its life and swift my car to go around it. But again, the roads were slippery because of the weather.
Yes, I blame the weather for this.
I lost control over my car and it went straight down the hill.
[What are you doing? You’re going to kill us!] Mini barked beside me.
“I’m trying to save us, so shush!“ I screamed, but she continued barking. I kept stirring the wheel to get the control and pressed the breaks to stop the car but nothing worked, it glided in the snow down.
My eyes widened when I saw a big rock in front of me. [Look out!] Mini barked.
I yanked her from her seat and wrapped my arms tightly around her.
I thought I was going to die and dying in an abandoned place, in a car covered with snow, my body getting rusty and my dog laying bedside me where no one could find us didn’t sound appealing at all.
“FU--AAAA!” I cried out.
My car collided with the rock. Because of the impact, my car jumped a little, making us jolt forward and knocked down with a thud.
