TOUCHÉ.
My weekend going perfectly well gave me so much inspiration for the week. I called Dave into my office and told him we were going to start working on our idea. He was in charge of auditioning seamstresses and cleaning out some empty office spaces for the clothing line launch. I was in charge of creativity so I came up with several styles on my sketching pad.
I put some of the interns in charge of getting the materials we needed from the suppliers. The office was becoming busier than ever and I was starting to see new faces. I was hoping not to sink into a huge debt because I was putting everything at risk for this vision to come to life. Every time I thought negatively about it something reassured me that it was going to be successful.
I had deadlines to meet because I got a last minute slot for the GTB fashion weekend. I was going to be showcasing my designs with other prominent designers. I sat down with Dave and we finally concluded on putting adding accessories to the line on hold. We decided to go with clothing first and branch out to making accessories later if the clothes sold well.
I was currently correcting some of the seamstresses, the clothes weren't looking good enough to showcase and I couldn't afford to waste time teaching them their jobs. The stress turned me into a bundle of nerves. I had models to hire for the fashion show, and even though it was in months I needed to book the best ones before they got booked by other designers. On top of all of this, I still had to dress celebrities going for events.
I went into my office and got my bag as Dave walked behind me.
"We need to get her final fitting. The award night is drawing near and she has rejected every outfit we suggested."
Dave was talking about a female client who was an actress. She wanted a tight fitted dress but she was inverted triangle shaped, which meant that tight fitted clothes wouldn't work all too well for her figure. We needed something to enhance her narrow hips and that was where I came in. Maybe if she saw me, she'd listen and go for a more appealing dress.
"What dresses do you have on the rack for her?" I asked Dave as we got to the elevator.
"Not body hugging ones. Since she's busty, the neck and chest area requires little to no detailing so I picked simple gowns, tight from neck to waist then puffy below...ball gown sort of thing."
"That's great. She'll have to see reason with me then, your choices are spot on as always."
"I hope she does. It has been frustrating working with her."
"Take a deep breath, I've got this."
We walked out of the elevator and went to the car park. We went with the company's truck because we were going with several dresses in about four separate racks. I sat beside Dave as he drove to my client's house. We entered a private street with ultra-modern houses, and Dave parked the truck in front of her house. I went to knock while he went to the back of the truck to roll out the racks. The door opened and I saw her in a silk dressing gown.
"Venus," I greeted.
"Honey, I'm glad you're here. Me and your assistant have been butting heads. You see, we have different taste," she said.
"So I've heard," I walked in.
"Make him see reason with me. I want what I want," Venus said as I followed her to the spotless kitchen.
Venus was one of my day ones so I wanted to please her. "What do you want?" I asked. It was important to always ask clients what they wanted, a basic but crucial rule.
"I want to show my figure in a gorgeous dress," she said.
"Dave is the best at doing that sort of thing. Whatever dress he choose is going to give you the desired effect."
"He picked puffy dresses, I'm not a school girl." She pouted as she prepared tea.
"You aren't, we'll find you a good dress."
"It's going to be a big night for me. I was nominated for an award and I don't want to look invisible beside those young girls."
Haha! That was what was causing the fuss, she was becoming insecure.
"I think you forget how beautiful you are. You can never be invisible, not even to a blind man."
That got her in a better mood because her wrinkle free face broke into a huge smile. "Let's check the new dresses. I'm letting you take control, give me something good," Venus said.
"I always deliver," I said as she placed a cup of tea beside me.
Dave pushed in the clothing racks and I got out several dresses for Venus to test.
"I don't want that," Venus said when I unzipped a yellow strapless ball gown from its bag.
"You haven't tested it," I replied.
"Yellow isn't my color. My skin is too pale."
I wanted to tell her it was possible to make any color look good on a person if the dress was styled perfectly, but I moved on. "Alright then, we have more dresses."
"That's too blingy," she said at a Balmain gown without trying it on.
"This is a Gucci dress," I said showing her a black, deep V-neck dress.
"I like this but the neck....it could look better on a B cup but not my double D's."
"It will actually. The waist is tight so it'll give you an hour glass shaped figure."
Venus waved her hand as if to dismiss that comment. Dave rolled his eyes behind her and I gave him a warning glance.
"I think you'd like this. It's from a local designer."
I showed her a champagne colored dress with elegant puffy sleeves. It had a plunging neckline but it wasn't too showy and the material pulled at her feet when she stepped out in it.
"I think I like this. I like these details." Venus touched the bust area where there was intrinsic detailing from the neckline to the waistline.
"And the sleeves are beautiful. The dress is very moderate," Dave added.
"But it's a local designer," Venus replied.
"Yes, but that doesn't lessen its beauty. You'll have to credit him though," I said.
"That's not bad. Get me his name and I'll do that," Venus said.
"Do you want to try on more gowns?" I asked sitting on the stool to rest my feet.
"I think I'll stick to this, let's just adjust some things. The sleeves are too long."
"Dave, get me some pins." I pinned the excesses and Venus looked in the mirror for the final look.
"It's much better." She smiled.
"We'll need to take it for a final fitting," I said.
Venus changed out of the gown and I placed it back in its bag.
"What about shoes?" Dave asked.
"We'll go with nude, stiletto heels, that should do. The dress is too long to show the heels anyway," I said.
"I have a new pair of suede, stiletto heels," Venus said.
"Can we have a look?" I asked.
Venus called her assistant and she came downstairs to drop the heels before disappearing.
"It's perfect," I said as I examined the shoes.
"What about hair?" Dave asked.
"Are you okay with an up do?" I asked Venus.
"Do you think it'll look okay with the dress?"
"It's going to bare your long neck, so it'll be preferable. You'll need dropping earrings to go with it, the sparkling kind."
"My glam squad will call you on the day of the award show. We'll send you pictures of the different earrings so you can say which one goes best."
"That's great. I think we're done here," I said.
"Yes, thanks for coming," Venus said walking me to the door with Dave behind struggling with the racks.
"Thanks for always choosing us for your styling," I replied.
"Who else can handle me?" She gave me a hug before shutting the door.
I helped Dave with the racks and we got into the bus.
"I basically told her the same thing you told her," Dave complained as he drove out of the high end area.
"You need to learn to stroke her ego. She's becoming insecure, did you hear her say, 'younger girls'? She thinks she's old."
"She isn't though."
"You have to let her know that."
"Lesson learnt then."
"What's going on with you anyway?" I had been too busy to catch up with Dave personal life.
"Everything is great. I'm just trying not to fumble the upcoming fashion week."
"It'll turn out well. Stop stressing."
"I think you should take your advice."
"Touché," I said.
Dave took a left turn and looked at me. "You were invited for a charity party by the way. I didn't know you were interested in that sort of thing."
"Not really, who sent the invite?"
"The governor."
"Stop kidding," I said, not believing my ears.
"I'm not. One of your clients must have added your name to his guest list."
"That's amazing, I literally cannot believe it," I said, trying not to scream out in joy. "When is it?"
"Middle of the month. It's typically upscale, the wealthy and elites are attending. Good place to network if you choose to."
"This just turned my day around."
"I was shocked when I got the invitation also. I'm really happy for you."
"Would you like to be my date? Go with me, please say yes."
"I can. I will. I must!" Dave screamed, "Yes, yes, yes!"
I laughed as he jumped on the seat. "Watch the road, please. Don't get us killed before the party."
"It's going to be superb," he shouted out of the window.
"Stop embarrassing me," I scolded as several passers-by turned to look at us.
Dave contained himself but kept smiling like a Cheshire cat. "This means so much to me. Argh, my heart can't take it," Dave said.
"Who was I going to take if not you?'
"Nobody?"
"His name is Chike, and we're not dating so I can't take him."
"Hmm."
"Is there a theme?"
"It's called the Sapphire ball, so I guess it's black tie."
"That's perfect. Check the schedule and let me know if we have any client attending too so we know how to prepare ahead of time."
"I'll do that," Dave said and grinned.
He honked in glee and I gave him a warning look. The truck moved slowly because due to traffic, and Dave remained unusually calm instead of yelling profanity at other drivers.
