Ch-39 ★Breakfast

Ch-39 ★Breakfast

[Jay]

I breathed in the icy air. In between, my fingers I held an unlit cigarette, not having the strength to light it as Aura’s disappointment eyes filled my mind. The cigarette slipped from hand, landing in the garbage piled next to the dumpsters outside the Court House.

I leaned against the cold wall. My head pounding against my skull. It hurt so damn much.

My cellphone was buzzing in the front pocket of my coat. I already know who it is.

Somehow, in the dazed state, I dug out the phone out.

“Jake, Give me some time. I’ll get the money,”

There was a gunshot in the background and panting noises as of someone beat up really bad. Then the voices were muffled on the other side. It sounded like a heated argument had broken out between groups of aggressive men. More gunshots resounded. A scream of agony filled the air.

“Hello?” I stood straighter. My spine rigid. What the hell is going on at Jake’s place? “Hello!”

“Fuc-“Jake cursed, his words were cut by a jarring sound like the one due to lack of service signals. Where the heck was he? He didn’t live far from the central city. There shouldn’t be any signal problems there. As for his work, he was apparently involved in some ‘real-estate’ business.

“You’re telling on me, ain’t ya?” He screamed. I shook my head. There is no way he could have gotten this information, not so early, not so soon. Few people knew about my and his deal- Aura, Sam, Matthew, and recently added to the list- Cassidy and only Aura and Cassidy know that I’m going to confess my crime.

“Your people are on my tail. That tall guy with the fishy beard been followin’ me for two damn days. He got guns and all that crap. You didn’t tell tha police. I swear if ya did I’ll-“

I cut him off angrily. “Are you out of your mind? I came back to London this evening. How in the world can I get someone to-?” I slammed my fist against the wall. “It’s probably your dirty work that got you in this mess. Assassination business, isn’t what you run? Damn! You’re gonna both of us killed,”

Not that I cared if I did get killed but I had to keep out of trouble for Aura’s sake. She wanted to try saving me and I couldn’t t take that away from her.

“If this is my mess, I’ll take care of everything but if this is a betrayal from your side, I’ll make sure you don’t have the voice to lie again,” It was the first time Jake spoke in proper grammar. Somehow that was really nerve-wrecking.

The phone’s line went dead and I was left thinking about the man keeping an eye on Jake. How could that be? Jake was a clever, far clever than an average criminal. He doesn’t leave a trace of blood behind. The police couldn’t have gotten suspicious of his ‘job’. It was for something else that man was spying on Jake but for what?

[Aulaura]

Mom led me down the nostalgic halls of our house. The paintings, the walls nothing has changed in the slightest. She smiled at me, laughter lines forming on the corners of her eyes. I can tell how happy she is to have me back. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same.

My parents, this house, my family even though I missed them, will always be a reminder of lonely nights I spent suffocated by own thoughts and fears about losing the people you love.  The warmth, the homeliness of my family had long abandoned me. I can’t say I feel bitter or resentment towards them. It is a neutral kind of feeling where I don’t hate them anymore.

She stopped in front of dad’s room, taking my hand in her age worn one. I hug her because that’s all I can do to repay her for the pain I’ve given. My mother smelled of the floral perfume she used to wear when I was younger. It's  so familiar that my heart ached inside me.

I pulled away and she watched me for a moment, her hand stroking my hair. “Your father will relieved to finally see you. Promise me something, dear?”

                I nodded my head.

“Forgive him for everything, please,” The pain in her voice was almost unbearable.

I gave her hand a gentle squeeze before turning away. My hands brush along the fine oak door, before I close it behind me. Dad sat at his desk in the corner, writing in the journal he’s always kept with him. The red leather bound covers is open, the pages seem yellow under the white fluorescent lamp.

“Dad?” I whispered, scared slightly.  He doesn’t hear me.

“Dad,” I speak a bit louder. His eyes lift from the journal and he blankly stared at me as though his mind hasn’t registered my presence.

It took him a minute to realize his daughter has returned. He staggered to his feet, almost falling out of the chair he had been seating in. It would have a comical scene if there weren’t tears in his eyes, the blue ones that I had inherited.

“My little girl? Aulaura?” He speaks softly, his fingers reach out to touch my face.

It takes all my strength not to back away, to run away from here. I clasp my hands tightly against my thighs. The guilt rose about my throat like acid.

I cleared my throat, desperately searching for the voice I have now lost. “Ye-yes, dad”

He laughed- out of joy. “I thought you wouldn’t come back. I thought I lost my child forever,” He gripped my arms, grinning. “Aura, you can do whatever you want. You don’t have to be the CEO of Innovation if you don’t want to,”

Then he sighed as though words couldn’t express the happiness he felt inside himself. The years had some lifted, he looked so much younger, so much like the father who used to give me piggyback rides. “I’m just so glad to have you back,”

I smiled, suddenly the resentment I had bottle inside me fizzled away, almost disappearing as a withering rose petal.

“Me too,”

“Order in the court! Order in the court!” The Judge’s voice soared above all the commotion in the congested room. Cassidy stared at the files on her desk, shuffling between the folders amidst all the chaos going on outside. Jay’s fans were screaming, their roars seeped through the tiny cracks in the cement and into the court.

They chanted in unison. “Free Jay Walters! Free Jay Walters”

Fear was a monster, a demon with vicious, sharp teeth and bleeding gums. The monster was ripping my insides out. Its claws dug into my chest and searched for my heart while it laughed, cackling loudly.

Cassidy bowed her head down and shook it slightly. She had given up. I stumbled into darkness. Hideous, red creatures were crawling my arms, eat my nerves which were alight with pain. The creatures looked like amputated fingers.

“Jay!” I screamed, fighting the hands that were trying to hold me back. “Jay!”

The policemen were taking Jay away. Out of thin air, Hunter appeared next to Jay. He positioned a knife against Jay’s throat and smiled viscously at me. “You stole my Samantha and I’m going to steal his life,”

Don’t. Take me instead. I wanted to scream but couldn’t. My voice was drowned by as blood flowed into my mouth. Gurgling and spluttering, I tried to rid myself of the blood. With horror, I realized it was Jay’s blood.

I woke up, drenched in sweat and mind clogged in fear. My hands searched for Jay in the dark. He lay next to me, breathing and alive- warm and comfortable. He was alright. He was alright. And that’s all that mattered. I pressed my lips on his forehead.

I stumbled out of the bed, not wanting to wake him up from my nightmare. It had taken a-lot coaxing to get him to finally fall asleep. Something was troubling and I didn’t bother asking him what because I already what it was going to be.

I slipped on my shoes and reached for his car keys on the bedside table. This is the last time I will do this- drive away from our troubles. I will return, maybe slight braver than the hysterical self right now. I left a note on the bedside explaining him that I was out to get us breakfast.

I pressed the accelerator. The morning was drawing closer while the sun began making its first appearance. Few cars surrounded me, probably some late night partyers or maybe some lost travelers. I steered the car around the curb that lead to Misty’s Café. Jay loved that place, especially since it belonged to his aunt.

I still had to visit Samantha. The nightmare had reminded of the obstacle still left in my path. I had to ask for her for forgiveness, for rejecting her as my sister, for thinking that she was trying to steal Jay from me. Jay and Samantha shared nothing of that sorts. That day in the park when I had seen them together, Jay had told Sam about the truth of Melody’s death and I had taken it for something else.

Strangely enough, I did not want to face Sam. No, not because I was still insecure or hated her but because she had gotten away from her dark past successfully, a feat Jay might not be able to accomplish. The mere thought brought a bitter taste in my mouth.

I tried focusing on the path in front of me instead. The roads were narrowing and the streets were empty, almost empty. There were two cars right behind me, one was a neon green Dodge and other was a silver Mercedes.  The cars looked out of place. It was like my mind could almost connect them with another image.

Like a key clicks into a lock, the image flashed in front of my eyes but it was too late.  The silver Mercedes had overtaken my black Jaguar.

The image was still lingering in my mind. Those two cars had been parked right outside Jay’s apartment and they had been following since I left the gated community of Oceanic Enclave.

Well, it looks like we’ll be having company for breakfast.  I hope Jay doesn't mind.

Note: I hate cliffhangers too, trust me.
