Chapter 6

"And I oop"
- Jasmine Masters

-------------

I'm a dumb bitch.

I turned down a job offer just because the guy was an ass. I could've just bit my tongue and secured the bag but no. I had to walk out.

Well, at least I walked out of that place like the baddest bitch to ever step in there.

I trudged into my room and took off my clothes. I folded them neatly and made sure there was in creases in it. After that I threw it on top of my bookbag.

It's now ten o'clock and I'm out of luck. I tried applying to other places after I turned down Mr. De La Cruz but I can't seem to get hired. The world is against me.

I was situated in my bed and ready to sleep when I heard a knock on my door. I really hope it's not the building manager. I'm not in the mood to be harassed.

I reluctantly got off the floor and made my way to the door. I slowly opened the door and peeked my head through.

"What are you doing here and how do you know where I live?"

I asked Mr. De La Cruz. He just stood there with a blank expression on his face. He pushed the door open and stepped inside.

His eyes scanned my apartment in disgust as he looked around the place. He looked at me then at the apartment as if he couldn't believe I Iived there.

"You have a lot of attitude for someone who basically lives in a raggedy box"

"Did you come here to insult me? Because if you did you can just leave"

I said a little defensive. He has the nerve to step in my living space just so he can criticize it. Not everyone is born with a silver spoon in there mouth.

"I want you to be my secretary"

"Excuse me sir but, who told you I still wanted the job offer after you insulted me in your office and in my own home"

He sighed and walked deeper into the apartment. He opened the fridge only to see a bottle cap amount of water left in there. He moved on to the cabinets only for them to be empty.

"You need the money"

"That doesn't mean I'll work for you. I rather be hungry and homeless than work for you"

Knock on wood.

"Why are you being so hard headed for? Look at where you live. I doubt you can pay your bills on time. You need this job"

I know that I need the job. I want to take the job. Having the life style I want can be doable with this job.

What's holding me back from accepting the job offer is the fact that he's constantly rubbing my need of money in my face. The more I think about it the more it makes me mad.

But, then the more I think about it the more I want to take the job offer. Being financially stable is one of my biggest goals. Not having to worry about next month's bills is what I'm striving for.

"I accept your job offer"

"I know you do. It was only a matter of time before you told me that. You start Monday morning at eight in the morning. Please do me a favor and show up to work clean and dress like you don't live in here"

He said as he looked around the apartment. I was going to say something but I decided to hold my tongue. I'm not trying to her fired before my first pay check.

I escorted him out of my apartment and got ready to close the door. He swiftly put his feet in the door stopping me from closing it.

What's up with these niggas always putting there body parts in the closing of my door? One day Imma close them with no remorse.

"I know where you live because I had one of my drivers follow you around while you were on the bus ride here"

I'm surprised he didn't use the classic 'I have connections' or 'don't worry about it".

"Thank you for telling me about your stalker mentality. If you would excuse me I have my sleep to catch up on"

He nodded his head and headed out. I should scared or even worried that he had someone follow me around all day but I'm not.

People with money often use it to their advantage or to belittle the little man. It's been happening since forever.

With that in mind I went in my room and laid down.

I have to switch my mentality from 'I'm broken and helpless' to 'I'm growing and healing'.

Monday morning

I've been waiting for this day to come. But, I'm also anxious. Today is my first day at work.

Yesterday I went to Goodwill and went looking for some nice work clothes.

I only feel rich at two stores. The dollar store and Goodwill.

After I finished taking a shower I picked up my Goodwill bag and took out my outfit which consisted of a black fitted dress which was for three dollars, a Yves Saint Laurent purse I got for ten dollars, and red bottom shoes I got for five dollars.

I spent eighteen dollars on an outfit that could've costed me hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Not having a lot of money has allowed me to be really resourceful with my money and how I spend it.

I even bought a notepad that was for fifty cents. I can use it to take notes and keep track of his schedule.

Once I arrived to the office building it was seven thirty. Getting there early was a must for me. I don't want him to have an even worse impression of me. He already thinks I'm a bimbo.

"I suggest you pour him his morning coffee. He likes it strong and black"

The desk lady, whose name I found out is Yolanda, said. She was the only one who helped me find my way around this place. The desk man that's on Mr. De La Cruz's floor told me to not bother her, she's busy.

All she was doing was eating a honey bun and filling her nails.

After I poured his coffee in his mug I quickly walked to his office and set it on his table. I took a seat in front of his desk with my notepad and pencil out waiting for him to arrive.

Just like Yolanda told me he showed up to his office at exactly eight o'clock. I fixed myself and waited for him to notice me.

His head was down as he typed away on his phone. His head didn't lift not even one centimeter. With his head down he pulled out his office chair and took a seat. He propped his head on the desk and got comfortable, almost knocking over the hot cup of coffee.

"Good morning Mr. De La Cruz"

I said after realizing that he was never going to look up. His slowly lifted up and his eyes finally meet mine. I watched as his eyes ran up and down my body. He removed his feet from the desk and adjusted himself in his seat.

"Good morning"

He said as he set his phone down on the table. We're actually getting somewhere. He didn't insult me.

"What are you looking at bimbo"

I spoke too soon.

"What's on the schedule for today?"

I asked with my notepad out, ready for instructions to write down. He looked at me like I was crazy. Like he wasn't expecting me to be ready to do my job.

"I want you file the files that are in the room next to mine. There is about ten thousand papers that needs to be put in folders and inside the file cabinet. That's all you have to do. It's a very simple task so please don't mess it up"

I nodded my head and put away my notepad. I got up and got ready to bolt out of this room. I turned around and started to pull down my dress. I bend over to dust off my shoes that had a piece of lint on it.

I was about to leave when I heard a snap. I stopped in my tracks and turned around. The pencil that was in Mr. De La Cruz's hand was snapped in half.

A look of anger was on his face as he looked at me. I shook off his glare and reached for the door handle. I heard him groan behind me. I quickly left the room before he became the hulk and smash everything in his office.

I walked to the door that read 'file room' in bold black letters. I opened the door and I immediately wanted to walk out. Stacks of papers littered the whole room. The floor was basically made up of papers.

I took one step inside and a bunch of papers came tumbling down from the stack of papers that were stacked up on the cabinet. It looks like the files where just thrown in the room along with the folders.

Well, time for me to get to work.

Hours later I was finally done with the papers. I started when it was eight fifteen. It's now nine pm. It took me twelve hours to finish filing the papers.

I haven't see natural light ever since I came in here. Yolanda brought me lunch in the file room since she knew I wouldn't be done by lunch time.

I packed up all my stuff and got ready to leave. Before I left I stopped by Mr. De La Cruz's office. I knocked softly on the door and waited for him to open the door. I heard him say come in a couple seconds later.

"I'm heading out, is there anything else you want me to do"

"No, you can leave"

"Good night sir"

After a few seconds of him not replying I closed the door and left. The office was empty. A pen drop can be heard. Only the boss and I were left.

Even though this job is hard this is what I signed up for. I'm not going to complain about having a lot to do since this is a job. I don't expect anything to be handed to me.

Tomorrow I'll be back and ready to catch anything Mr. De La Cruz throws at me.
