Chapter 4: Anxious
[starts directly where the last chapter ended]
"Jin-hyung! There you are!" Jimin shouted in panic when the older male returned to his desk from Namjoon's office after his lunch run.
Jin looked around to notice the whole office in a bit of a hushed frenzy, but it seemed to be growing louder by the minute. "What's going on?" He asked.
"One of the suppliers we worked with called and were furious, they said we gave them the wrong numbers, and now they don't have enough supplies for what we need shipped out by tomorrow!" Jimin explained still in a frantic manner.
"That's horrible," Jin expressed his genuine concern. "but why were you looking for me?"
Jimin and Tae looked at each other as if they didn't know how they should respond.
Hobi, who's smile had also dropped sighed, speaking calmly like he was being sure to show he wasn't angry. "Jin, they were numbers you entered into the report."
"What??" Jin asked in genuine shock. He felt his heart drop to his stomach. "Wait no, There's no way, I was adamant to be careful that the data was entered perfectly!" He rambled on, dropping into his desk chair and quickly logging onto his computer to open the file.
"Calm down Jin-hyung I'm sure it was just an accident." Jimin assured him quietly so others in the office wouldn't hear.
"Yeah, don't worry no one is blaming you, we still don't know what exactly happened." Hobi added.
Jin had got the file open and looked at the numbers, sure enough they were wrong. "What...? No there's no way, I remember putting the right ones in..." he muttered to himself, anxiety flaring up through his nerves. He hadn't made a mistake this big at work since he first started.
"Hoseok!" A female employee called from the other end of the office.
The four men all looked up from the screen at her to see she was on the phone, holding the receiver away from her mouth and covering it with the palm of her hand.
"The CEO of the supplier is on the phone, hes demanding to speak to the person who's responsible for this." she started explaining nervously. "I tried to talk him out of it, but he's insisting."
Jin sunk down a bit wincing, but then calmly stood, walking over to her and taking the phone. Hobi and Jimin followed and stood by him while Tae left, presumably to inform Namjoon of the situation. He kept his body from shaking and kept his voice collected. "Hello, sir, I am Kim Seokjin."
"YOU INCOMPETENT BASTARD!" a male voice boomed from the other end, causing Jin to have to hold the phone away from his ear a bit. "DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TROUBLE THIS MISTAKE HAS CAUSED OUR COMPANY!?"
"Yes sir, I understand. I am very sorry, it was entirely my responsibility and I apologize." Jin explained desperately glancing at Hobi who gave him a sympathetic look.
"YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!" The man didn't calm. "MY PEOPLE ARE SCRABBLING LIKE ANTS HERE TO FIX YOUR MISTAKE! WE HAVE OTHER THINGS WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF TOO YOU KNOW, HOW COULD YOU MAKE SUCH A SIMPLE MISTAKE??"
"Again sir, I understand and apologize, we are doing everything we can here on our end to help you out." Jin kept his voice calm, but was secretly praying the man would stop.
"BULLSHIT! DOING EVERYTHING YOU CAN! Ha!" the man scoffed, lowering his voice only slightly. "Then why isn't it fixed?! Listen here buddy you better hope you have a good resume prepared because this little slip up won't go unnoticed! Let me talk to your superior, I'm going to get you FIRED do you understand that?? YOUR ASS WILL NEVER WORK IN THIS TOWN AGAIN!"
Jin actually flinched at those words, causing Jimin and Hobi to grow concerned, despite not knowing what was said. "Sir, please calm down." Jin couldn't help but let a little desperation leak into his voice. He remained Just as composed on the outside, but was honestly cursing himself for having to hold back tears. He couldn't lose another job, he couldn't. The man kept rambling on to him, Jin sitting there and taking it before someone from behind suddenly took the phone from his hand.
Namjoon stood there with an unreadable expression and casually put the phone to his ear. All eyes fell to him almost as if in shock. "Hello sir this is Kim Namjoon, I'm the superior here and I've just been made aware of the situation. Is there something more you need from me?" He paused to hear the response. "I understand sir, this is a hard situation on our end too, but I can assure you we are also doing all we can to fix it as fast as we can. I hope you can understand as well and we can all be reasonable."
The air in the office was dead and stiflingly quiet.
Namjoon looked to Jin for a moment before continuing his conversation. "We aren't entirely sure if that's necessary, I-" He seemed to look annoyed as if he was cut off. "If you feel the need, yes, goodbye." He hung up the phone back on the woman's desk, and there was a short moment of continued silence.
"What happened, sir?" Hobi asked bravely breaking it.
"He stated he is going to come here to discuss the issue further." Namjoon stated simply.
"Right now??" Jimin asked.
"Yes, all of you get back to work, help them in any way you can. Jin, come with me to my office. Hobi when he arrives you come as well."
"Yes sir." Both males stated, Jin's sounding much more somber.
-&-
Jin stood in Namjoon's office trying not to shuffle around too awkwardly. His new boss had hardly said a word to him since they left the main part of the office, and he was growing more and more anxious about his situation. He knew he had fucked up big time, but he prayed with everything in him that he would at least not lose his job. Even if he never got a raise, bonus, or promotion ever again in his life. Despite his fear he wished Namjoon would at least look at him. He hadn't shown any emotion toward the situation and remained calm, which was arguably more unsettling.
There was a knock at the door, causing Jin to jump a little and for Namjoon to look up from the files he was going through on his desk.
"Namjoon sir, he's arrived." Hobi's voice came from the other side.
"Show him in." He replied.
A few moments later Hoseok walked in the room with an angry looking man, shorter than all three of them, but still coming off as having a somewhat intimidating aura.
"Welcome to our company sir, I hope we can be helpful to you." Namjoon said almost routinely. He noticed Hoseok about to leave, but stopped him. "Mr. Jung, please stay."
Hobi seemed confused, but nodded and move to stand over by Jin.
"who the hell is he?!" the man barked. "Who is the irresponsible little brat that made such a rookie mistake??"
Jin opened his mouth to take responsibility, but Namjoon spoke before him.
"I would appreciate if you didn't throw around such insults so carelessly." Namjoon spoke steadily. "Now as I told you over the phone, we are doing everything we can here to correct the situation. I didn't want to rudely decline your offer to come here, and you insisted, so we can at least show you how things are being handled on our end."
"I didn't come here to see 'how things are being handled' I came to see who is responsible!" his gaze then fell to Jin. "It was you wasn't it?? Why else would a simple office worker be here at a time like this?"
Jin bowed down deeply. "I'm very sorry to cause so much trouble sir, there's no excuse."
The man scoffed. "No excuse is right. I hope unemployment suits you, honestly, a lowlife like you causing such astronomical trouble. It's amusing considering how easily everything you own in a second could be bought out from under you, and you'd be left with nothing."
They all looked back over to Namjoon quickly as he suddenly slammed his hands down onto his desk. "Sir," his voice now showed a bit of anger. "I ask you again not to insult my employees. No one here is losing their job over something like this. It would better benefit you if you watched your temper and controlled your tongue."
"Are you somehow blaming me for this??" The man asked in disbelief.
"Of course not, but you have taken up our time coming here for such a petty reason, and made more of a deal out of something then it needed to be. If you expect me to fire him, don't, considering I have to check all paperwork before it is sent out, it is just as much my responsibility as it is his. Do not threaten the positions of people you have no power over. I stand by my employees, and I now have to kindly ask you to leave my office. Mr. Jung here will show you the efforts being made to help your company." Namjoon walked around his desk to stand in front of the man.
"Sir please come this way." Hobi tried to lead him.
"Stand by him! Then you are willing to take responsibility for the troubles he caused. This mistake may seem small from your end, but it is major to my company!" He turned his attention back to Jin moving toward him. "If something were to happen, you had better be sorry-!"
Jin almost felt as if his heart stopped beating as the man approached. He didn't even process what he was saying, he simply froze in his place, terrified about what the furious man may do to him; how he may hurt him. He literally couldn't breath in that moment.
Namjoon quickly stuck an arm between them his tone growing to show genuine anger. "Sir, leave my office, now. Hoseok."
"Yes, sir please come this way, I'll show you out." Hobi led the man away, as he continued to yell in anger, being muffled as the door closed behind them.
Jin realized he had actual not been breathing and began to again, but it came out as subtle pants, that he tried desperately to control, as well as his rapidly beating heart. He hadn't felt that kind of triggering fear in a while, and he cursed himself for letting something so simple scare him so much. He realized Namjoon was standing in front of him and looked up to him, once again feigning his calm outer demeanor.
"Are you alright Seokjin?" He asked him.
"Yes sir, just a little on edge with all the drama." The shorter assured him.
"Mm." The C.E.O. nodded simply. He the raised a hand reaching out toward him.
Jin retracted away quickly, seeming surprised by his own action, before looking down to the floor.
Namjoon raised a brow at him, but then dropped his hand short of touching him, stepping away, and back around his desk. "Get something to drink to calm your nerves and then just get back to work for now. If there are any updates to the situation I'll contact you."
Jin wanted to ask more, but couldn't bring himself to do so. He simply bowed towards him uttering a small, "yes sir." before leaving his office.
-&-
Jin's eyes drooped as he continued to stare at the computer screen on his desk. The sun had set and Hobi and the others had already gone home, making him the only one left in the main part of the office. He half regretted not going home with Jimin when he'd offered, but knew since this whole mess was his fault, he should stay behind to help as much as he could.
He felt his chin slip away from the palm of his hand and jolted awake just in time to save his face from hurtling into his keyboard. He then shook his head as if to snap himself out of it. Come on Jin you've pulled later nights then this, don't ruin you image. He sighed before doing a bit more work on his computer trying hard to keep his eyes open.
He suddenly heard some shuffling come from the back office but assumed it was someone locking up, so he ignored it. That is until someone walked into the room and addressed him.
"Seokjin, why are you still here?" Namjoon asked as he spotted him and moved over to his cubical.
"I figured I'd better work as much as I can to make up for my mistake." He answered simply.
"There's no need. We have done all we can for now, go home there's no use exhausting yourself." Namjoon stated. "That's not a request either."
Jin sighed, normally he'd be annoyed by anyone trying to force him to do anything, but right now he really didn't want to stay. He saved his work and shut down his computer before standing. He suddenly felt a sharp pain go through his stomach and grabbed it, holding the desk for support.
"Are you Alright?" Namjoon suddenly asked moving closer to him. "You aren't ill are you?"
"No." The older male replied letting out a slow breath of air before forcing himself to stand upright. "I just haven't eaten anything today."
"What??" The taller suddenly exclaimed. "Why didn't you eat lunch?"
"I was busy on my break getting your food." Jin retaliated failing to hide a bit of resentment in his tone.
Namjoon sighed. "Your supposed to get something for yourself too, I don't expect you to starve for my benefit."
"You told me not to buy anything else." Jin debated.
"Idiot. I meant don't run off with my card, not don't buy food for yourself, god, do you expect me to send you out on errands for nothing?" Namjoon scolded, not in a way a boss would to his subordinate, but more in a casual way.
Jin was surprised by the sudden change in tone, he watched him for a moment, not sure how to feel about it.
When he didn't get a response Namjoon let out another sigh. "Come with me."
"What?" Jin asked.
"Just come with me I'll get you something to eat." His superior clarified.
"You don't have to-"
"I'm responsible for you missing lunch, so I'll buy you dinner." Namjoon interrupted him. "No more arguing, let's go." He started to walk towards the elevators.
Jin looked around in confusion, but then grabbed his suitcase, giving in and following him.
-&-
Jin was now sitting across from Namjoon at the same restaurant he'd ordered his lunch from. He was scanning across the high price menu in slight awe, but his eyes kept being drawn back to the steak. His stomach growled at the thought of it, but of course it was more expensive then most of the food listed.
"Get whatever you like, you don't have to worry about it." Namjoon then spoke up.
Jin nodded, biting back a smile at the thought of the delicious red meat. I haven't had a good steak in so long. He thought excitedly reading the options.
Unbeknownst to him the taller was watching him, feeling a small smile tug at the corner of his lips as well.
The waitress came with their drinks and took their order before going back to the kitchen again, leaving them alone in the quiet murmur of the restaurant.
"Don't do this again." Namjoon broke the temporary silence between them. "You have to eat lunch. I don't want to worry about my employees collapsing during work."
Jin looked over at him in surprise. He was worried about me..? He felt his heart do something funny in his chest for a split second, but tried to ignore it, not knowing exactly what it meant. "Yes sir."
Namjoon looked like he wanted to speak again, but stopped, taking a drink of water instead.
A waiter trying to get to a table behind them then accidentally brushed against Jin's back, causing the male to automatically stiffen and lean away from him.
"I'm so sorry sir." The waiter apologized, bowing to him regretfully.
"It's alright." Jin smiled politely tilting his head a bit back to him. He then turned back around letting his shoulders fall back to their normal posture.
"So it isn't just me..." Namjoon suddenly muttered quietly.
"What?" Jin asked in confusion.
"Nothing, our food is here, let's eat." The younger waved it off.
-&-
Namjoon pulled in front of Jin's building and stopped the car by the curb.
"Thank you sir." Jin told him grabbing his suitcase off the floor. "For everything today."
Namjoon couldn't help but smile at him. "You don't have to thank me. And actually Seokjin, I was gonna say it at the restaurant, but outside of the office you don't have to call me sir."
"It's just what I feel comfortable with. You are superior after-all." Jin replied back huffing a bit. "Besides you always call me by my full name, Seokjin, you don't have to, I prefer when people just call me Jin."
"Hmm," Namjoon hummed trying to look like he was thinking for a moment. "But you are older than me, so really maybe I should call you... Jin-hyung." He suddenly smirked leaning closer to him, the name rolling off his tongue fondly.
Jin looked at the other male's face lost for a moment as if searching for something. He felt his chest tighten again, but tried to blame it on being so tired. He'd never been so affected by someone simply saying his name before. He suddenly snapped out of it, leaning away from the taller male. "There's no need, it sounds weird coming from my boss. I'm tired, see you tomorrow." He spoke quickly, clutching his bag close to him before getting out of the car and closing the door behind him. He looked back for a second to see Namjoon watching him still as he made his way toward the building, the same smug smile on his face. The hell Jin?! He thought to himself. Pull yourself together...
