Chapter 17 - Time in a bottle
After a night of awkward drama and nonsense, Donnie became the family's first hermit by initiating the lock interface to his room.
"Shelldon, tell my family I will miss them and their everyday nonsense," the purple turtle dove head first into his plush purple bed while Shelldon worriedly hovered by his father's shoulder.
"What happened PapaTello?"
Donnie smirked sadly at the affectionate name from his drone child, "Shelldon, I bungled my shot with an angel. How could I not have seen that love, an action of hormones and neurons firing at alarming rates in my ceberum would cause me pain, anguish, and ugh- embarrassment."
"Ceberum?"
"Yes, my dear boy. The scientific term losers call brain." Shelldon made a metallic clink as his head pitifully tilted to the side.
"Owhh.... you mean cerebrum..."
Donatello gasped and slumped off his bed, "GASPING! Hath I knew how love would thwart mine soul, Iove I would have not partaken in." The little drone groaned silently, knowing the drama that would ensue for the heartbroken turtle.
"Shelldon, I am going to lock myself in here for the rest of my days. Until I become as old as dad and just cry over my stupid obsession of me actually being able to fall in love." There he goes. Spiraling himself over his first love failure. Dianne ran out of the lair to who knows where after Casey Jr's reveal of her future.
Dreaming of the future is fun but when it is served to you on a silver platter for all to see... you'd wish to unsee it immediately. Casey Jr and the other girls ran after Dianne, which left Draxum, Splinter, and the boys to deal with their new dilemma. Just as Draxum tried to spew his first question of many, Donnie had already sought shelter in his gloomy room.
Reaching over his shoulder, the thunk coming from the battle shell hitting the ground literally caused the weight to be lifted off Donnie's shoulders. "Initiate Lockdown Protocol 17. I shall not be disturbed in my moment of hurt. Further processing this embarrassment shall cause my total demise. I should have known not to over think and over-assess these situations."
The purple droid hummed sadly, "It wasn't your fault papa. You were just looking out for Dianne."
The mention of her name made Donatello's heart twist painfully. The moment she left the lair, he knew he messed up big time. "Casey warned us about telling others about the future. I should have kept my mouth shut from the start but her infernal beauty and wit snared me like a spider's web. Except I fell for the beauty of a goddess and made a fool of myself."
With that, he ushered Shelldon out of his door, having his room and lonesome all to himself.
---
The rooftops provided the most perfect view of the dazzling city of New York. Dianne found herself almost lost in its twinkling lights; the keyword being almost. Whatever revelation Donatello had oh so gracefully laid out for the whole Hamato jim-bang to see was just too much for the Silver Knight to handle. Don't get her wrong, Dianne didn't mind that the tech genius cared for her well-being, but this whole 'Donnie is your future husband thing' is really confusing.
She hoped the lights could've provided her the solace and distraction that she so desperately needed but Casey Junior had been skillful enough to follow Dianne up to the city's rooftops. Hearing his footsteps scrambling up the ladder, she sighed harshly.
"What's with you?"
Casey huffed as he pulled himself up on the last step, "Wh-what?" he tiredly panted. Dianne sympathetically watches the kid collect himself and as she did so, took in his features. Dianne has only met him about once or twice, not really sitting down to talk with him. Casey Jr had dark, flowy shoulder-length hair, sharp features, and a lean and athletic body shape. Almost as if he'd been trained by the turtles themselves. "WOW, you- you travel fast!" he said appreciatively.
"Portals," the thief replied dryly.
"How do you move so fast?" Casey completely missed her answer.
Dianne rolled her eyes, "I just told you," then grimaced as she found herself speaking like the purple turtle, "Stop avoiding my question, I know you heard me the first time."
Casey replied with an unsurprised look, "Yeah, I just wanted to test my luck. I could never really lie to you since I was little."
This made Dianne scoff, "Please, not you too. I don't need you to play Donatello's charade about the whole future sha-bang."
"But, I'm not lying,"
"Really? So, you're telling me that you're from the future?"
Casey Jones Junior solemnly nodded. The Silver Knight contemplated her next question. Her sharp eyes tried to dig into Casey's, finding out if he truly meant what he said or if this was all bullshit. When Casey didn't falter, she began to beat around the bush.
Technically, Dianne deals with a little time travel herself. That is just how portals work. You open a portal at one point, step through it and end up in a whole new different place without needing to travel on foot. Meaning, if a drive from New York to New Jersey took someone an hour's journey, Dianne would only take a second. Portals bend time and space.
So why was she so against the idea of Casey being from the future? Why does Dianne find herself in absolute denial of her future with the turtles?
Maybe because the human brain just refuses to understand the more complicated aspects of life.
"Prove it."
"I'm sorry, what?" Casey asked incredulously.
"I said prove it. Prove that you are really from the future. Say something, that I would know. Or maybe show me an artifact?" Dianne internally cursed. Casey could show her an old shoe of his and claim it's from the future.
"Just... how do I know you're telling me the truth? How do I know, Donnie told me the truth. Not just saying this because he likes me and-"
"Wait! You know he likes you?"
Dianne felt a blush rising to her cheeks, but recovered quickly, "He doesn't hide it that well." Casey smirked as he saw a tiny shy smile draw on her lips. "Stop distracting me, just can you please?" the desperate confusion came clean in her voice.
Casey pitied her. Dianne in the future knew him since birth. Dianne now is innocent in all accounts of his current life in the current Krang-free world. Still, the Dianne he knew growing up is just the same Dianne as now. Just younger, brash, bolder, never the less, still the same sweet woman he regarded as a mother after his owner passed.
"Can I hug you?" Casey asked in a voice so small. The young thief felt her heartstrings being pulled on instinct. Needing to hold Casey close. Not in a romantic way but maternally? Does anything make sense anymore?
As soon as she nodded, Casey effortlessly engulfed her in the warmest of hugs. Dianne felt like a brick wall but Casey didn't relent. Eventually, her own arms encased the boy. The hug felt old and treasured as if it had been done many times and now had etched itself in the stars. Tears involuntarily pricked at her eyes. The sense of security and priceless peace washed over and settled like a calming wave. As Dianne shivered, Casey muttered words of comfort and apologies.
"It's not your fault. I know you feel lost and confused," Casey offered her words from the future. Very same words as the one the future version of her that brought peace to the once grieving son of Cassandra Jones after the great Footclan warrior passed in the Krangified world.
Dianne grasped onto Casey's shoulder and leaned in closer to the warmth that emanates from him. Casey gently pulled away from the hug, but his hand remained on her shoulder, "Look, I know any form of my words or actions or physical proof I show can say that I am from the future."
Dianne waited patiently for what he had to say. "I have no proof that I'm from the future. Not now anyways, " Casey went on with his eyes cast down.
"Does this have to do with the invasion those few years back?"
Casey pursed his lips and nodded. "Yeah. I was sent back by Master Leonardo and Master Michelangelo to stop the Krang. After Master Michelangelo successfully portalled me back to the day of the invasion, I managed to locate my old-younger versions, of my family I told them about the impending doom and I guess we managed to save the planet."
The thief chuckled, "Sounds like a whole long story."
Casey shrugged tiredly, "Yeah, it was. But the good thing is that we managed to save this planet from doom and stop the future from ever happening."
The mention of the future brought back some unpleasant and confusing memories. Apparently, it was quite obvious from the expressions on her face.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you again."
Dianne waved him off and offered her gentle smile. "It's alright. It's been a confusing day for everyone. Where are the girls? I know they were behind you,"
"I told them I'd handle it. Commander O'Neil was quite mad about how Master Dee handled the whole situation earlier."
The two broke into laughter. Then with their spirits lifted Casey Jr and Dianne Rosetta looked upon the bright city of New York. "So... about this whole future thing..." the female started,
"We don't have to talk about it if you don't want to," Casey knew the consequences of pushing such scary topics.
"No, no. I... just tell me. I'm curious. If you are really from the future you must know something about me, right?"
It took Casey a few seconds before he decided to finally spill the future beans. Casey produced a small beaten-up book. Dianne looked at the book as he offered it to her.
"I know you understand your powers. If there is any proof that I am from the future, there is always one ability that you have kept to yourself since your birth that not even Uncle Draxum know's about."
Her eyes snapped back to Casey's, "How?"
The young man smiled sadly, "The future, remember? I'm from the future. You told me this the day my mother died."
Casey encased the book and Dianne's hand with his own. "I remember how you told me to concentrate and let go. Then you used your mystic energy and infused it with this book. Because my mother gave me this book, it contained traces of her memories, her life, and mine."
Gently, he brought Dianne closer and laid his forehead against hers. "You looked into the past and brought memories to life, visions. I understood that even with my mother long gone, I still had her with me. In my soul. Anatawa Hitorijanai."
As the silence ate away at the shock of the revelation of her unspoken talent, Dianne braved the unknown.
She opened the time in the bottle.
/././.
"2022. In the year 2022, the Krang invaded. The Foot clan, an ancient Japanese ninja clan brought back their masters from afar. The Krang was brought in using a mystic doorway. Once the ancients set foot upon our world, everything was forsaken. The three leaders of Krang devoured every corner of the world. Men, woman, and children, were enslaved and mutated to the likings of the ancients. The mystic world fell within a day. The Hidden City collapsed and the yokai stronghold of the realm was destroyed. Years of culture, history, stories, and lives were wiped out of existence in the blink of an eye.
Eventually, the yokai and humankind united under one banner. Four kappa yokai led the war with an iron fist. The Hamato Clan rose up from the ashes, as their ancestors once did to stop the ancients from spreading.
Life became a war. It killed or be killed. Throughout the years, many war fronts were won and lost, though it was apparent that the world was losing.
Four masters of the Hamato Clan, Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo never gave up. With the help of yokai and humans, there was hope.
The death of their father, Master Splinter, also known as Hamato Yoshi brought the brothers together. Their souls bonded to a level like no other. The loss of their father was merciful as the old Hamato died of old age but his soul was content. He told his sons how proud he was of the warriors they had become.
With his dying breath, old Yoshi blessed his second twin, Donatello Hamato, and his soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Dianne Rosetta. Final words before his passing, Yoshi welcomed the newest member of the clan as Dianne Rosetta and Donatello Hamato married under their father's final gaze.
As the elder died, the family mourned. Towards the night, the survivors of the war heard the news. Hamato Yoshi died an honorable and excellent father. His knowledge passed on like stories from the Bible. Baron Draxum and Big Mama honored the passing of their friend and husband, respectively, and became the next protectors in line of the Hamato clan.
The final act was a celebration admits the sadness. The oldest of the Hamato, Raphael, tied the unity cord around Hamato Donatello and Dianne's wrists, binding them symbolically. The survivors rejoiced and celebrated the new couple and celebrated life as well.
Leonardo, the leader of the Resistance against the Krang could not be any happier that his grumpy brother finally found someone to share his life with. The meeting of the two happy souls was fated. A simple love story. Donatello got hurt, and Dianne was the doctor who saved his life. From then on, the two hit off. Both were highly revered individuals. One was a master thief who could steal vital information right under the Krang's noses and the other was the backbone of the Resistance's defenses, medical supply, sustenance, and basically almost everything the Resistance ran on.
Michelangelo a master was a master in mystic arts. Leonardo the greatest ninja of all time, and Raphael, the eldest brother of the Hamato clan. April O'Neil, their commander, Lieutenant Cassandra Jones, and their spy, Sunita.
All these individuals gave the Resistance all the hope they needed.
Leonardo would hang out with Dianne whenever Donatello went on supply runs. Michelangelo often accompanied Dianne to the medbay and also became his wall to cry on whenever the youngest Hamato felt sad.
Dianne and Michelangelo had a sibling bond.
Raphael was always the bigger brother for everyone to count on.
///
However good things come and go. An unfortunate mishap, a misstep. Hamato Raphael died protecting Cassandra Jones, who at that time was heavily pregnant and just suffered the loss of her unofficial lover. It was a breach in the Resistance. A Krang force managed to make its way in through the first barrier. Cassandra at the time was on patrol, with the backing of her best turtle friend, Raphael.
As the Krang swarmed the first defenses, Raphael and Cassandra ran for safety. She couldn't fight in that state. Their main priority was to get the expected mother to the comforts of the inner Resistance. Their distress call pinged to the base. Raphael fought valiantly. Unfortunately, an old building caught in the middle of an explosion nearly crushed Cassandra. The blow never came upon the woman's shoulders. When Cassandra turned around, she collapsed out of sheer shock as her best friend lay buried under the rubble. Lifeless.
Leonardo manifested a portal just at that moment and rescued the pregnant woman. He found his brother dead.
Dianne stays up with Leonardo on sleepless nights. Letting the turtle bask in silence and the free flow of Dianne's mystic energy to comfort him.
Michelangelo joined Dianne and Donnie for breaks in search of comfort.
///
Because of the fall, Cassandra's delivery was pushed early. The family waited worriedly outside the delivery room. A few moments later after hours of grueling shouts of pain, Draxum and Big Mama appeared. In the spider yokai's human hand laid a small bundle. Big Mama was crying. Shaking her head. Draxum broke the news of Cassandra's passing.
///
Sitting in their room, Donatello and Dianne silently comforted each. Offering each other's shoulder to cry on. Dianne felt horrible. The sense of dread was still thick in the air. She glanced at the small baby in her hands, then at her own swollen belly.
Cassandra and she were on the same term. They had planned everything, from baby names to battle plans, and early childhood education. With her friend gone, Dianne felt alone and worried for her's and Donatello's own child. Donatello hugged his new family close to himself. Promising to protect them from every harm. One hand caressed his wife's stomach, the other gently tracing over Hamato Casey Jones Junior's face.
Michelangelo and Leonardo always stayed by the couple's side. Always keeping either one in view when the other is away.
The females watched over Dianne through the duration of her pregnancy. Making sure that Dianne got all the exercise and nutrition a mother would need.
///
Three months later, Dianne fell into labor. It had been a quiet season admits the war. The Krang suffered the heaviest of blows, fuelled by the anger of the Hamato brothers. It would be months before the aliens could recover. After her a painful 16 hours, the Hamato clan welcomed a new baby girl.
Dianne and Donatello Hamato were proud parents of Hamato Casey Jones Junior and Hamato Catherine Von Ryan. This momentous occasion ushered in a wave and season of unusual peace and prosperity to the Resistance. Leonardo, Michelangelo, April, and Sunita were proud godparents, uncles, and aunts of their niece and nephew.
Leonardo spent the most time gawking over Casey and Catherine, and the two young ones got attached to his favorite uncle quite quickly. Leonardo even promised to train Casey and Catherine in self-defense and of course, while Donatello handled science and machinery, and Michelangelo handled mystics. Dianne stuck to teaching the kids medicine and first aid. Stealing would come at a later age, only to be used on the Krang of course.
Draxum and Big Mama had finally been able to reach the level of Granduncle and Grandaunt.
It was a full year of love and happiness, and another child to Donatello and Dianne.
///
By the next year, the Hamato-Jones siblings could already walk. They were quick learners thanks to Donatello's enhanced childcare strategies. The man, once so engrossed in science now hearth warmth to the brim because of the beautiful gift of his family.
One day, while the kids were playing with their granduncle and grandaunt, the base was under attack again. Draxum and Big Mama were caught in the middle of a Krang fight.
When the members of the Hamato clan fought off the aliens, they had come to know that Draxum suffered a fatal injury while fighting off the Krang. Catherine... was infected by Krang.
In the operating theater, Donatello wept over the loss of his daughter and his second father figure. He never blamed Draxum or Big Mama. They were already old but did their best to protect the children. Casey lived so the blood of the Hamato still carried on in one of the children.
Leonardo and Michelangelo buried the bodies of their deceased beside Master Splinter's, Raphael's, and Cassandra's. Dianne lost a huge part of her that day. Donatello had been the only person she wanted to lean on.
Three graves were dug. One for Draxum, one for dear Catherine, and the last for Donatello and Dianne's second child.
When everything finally settled in Dianne's mind, she suffered great shock and pain. Her womb failed as blood and amniotic water broke 6 months too early. The miscarriage sent her into depression.
///
Because of the help of Big Mama, April, Sunita and the turtles, Dianne eventually recovered. Not fully, but partially. In her sadness, Dianne protected Casey with all her might. Donatello slept with his battle shell on more since the unfortunate event, much to Dianne's dismay. Still, both husband and wife loved each other very much. Neither one gave up on the other. When Donatello stayed up almost all night to integrate some new system into their defenses, Dianne would stay up with him.
Kissing him on the temple. Muttering assurances of love and affection. She'd eventually sleep, curled into his lap as the purple turtle worked away through the night. A five-year-old Casey would then tip toe into his father's workspace, proceed to crawl onto his father's lap, and cuddle there.
///
Their full recovery happened when Donatello did the impossible and brought his almost abandoned AI to life. Shelldon, once a drone now walking, feeling, living, growing, and breathing. Donatello found a half- Krang-assimilated, human child. The baby was barely a few months old. The poor thing suffered from fever and had painful Krang-infused metal in it.
Donatello quickly realized that this baby must have come from an abandoned Krang project. The turtle ran back to the base and up to his lab. Neither his wife nor his family knew about it for he returned with the baby in the dead of night.
The next morning, he rushed to wake his sleeping wife and child.
Since then, the family welcomed a new child. Hamato Shelldon.
Casey and Sheldon grew up together as brothers. The turtle brother's often reminisced about their younger days before the Krang.
Casey, the round big brother of Sheldon, loved him to bits.
Finally, the death of Hamato Donatello and Hamato Dianne."
