Chapter Thirty

With a bang, my notebook slips across the bedding and lands on the carpeted flooring. I peer to the side and see the small smile playing on Blake's lips. He slowly slides the glowing screen of the tablet in front of me.
My gaze flickers to the bring screen to see what's so important. I notice the website is displaying a house for sale. There's a couple of pictures of the inside – an open kitchen / dining room, large bedrooms, bathroom, and the vibrant coloured yard.
"What do you think?" he inquires.
"Yea, it's nice." I smile.
I continue to flick through the images listed until I come to the end. The last image is a picture of a smallish build in pool fenced off from the main grassed area. From Blake's latest skinny dipping escapades, we're going to need a pool.
"Ugh, just nice?" he scoffs.
With a roll of my eyes, I shuffle onto my side. I use my hand to prop my head up so that I can look into Blake's eyes.
"You know what I mean, Blake! The house looks like a dream and I bet the price matches it too."
Anything that nice must cost your soul and more. These days, housing is way too expensive, especially for something we're interested in. Blake and I were lucky enough Angela and Thomas decided to build this extension, otherwise, we'd have been living in his parent's house.
"Now that was the answer I was looking for." He grins.
"What does that mean?" I frown.
"Means I'm on the right path," he replies.
Blake snags the tablet back and closes the webpage. He continues to scroll through the list until he comes across another house. He clicks on the extension list and searches through the images. I see the small rooms, minimal yard and turn my nose up.
"You don't like the other house?" I ask.
"The kitchen could be better and there's not enough storage space either," says Blake.
"Is that so?" I laugh. "You could fix all of that."
"We wouldn't have the money to fix is, though." He shrugs.
"Later on we could if the kitchen still annoys you. Heck, we'll rip it out and put some fancy stuff in there for you." I wink.
"We could also expand the wardrobe. Put a chair in just like you want."
"At this rate, we might as well build our own house. It might be cheaper too." I chuckle.
Blake's arm wraps around my waist as he tugs me in for a kiss. His soft lips move against mine as I smile into the passionate kiss. Rolling onto my back, I wrap my arm around his neck and bring his lips back to mine.
"I've missed this," I whisper against his lips.
My back arches with anticipation as Blake tenderly nibbles on my skin. I raggedly exhale as my eyes slowly flutter shut.
There's a knock against the front door which sends us shooting apart. I groan while Blake rolls off the bed to answer it.
I retrieve my study book from the floor and then straighten my clothes. Trailing downstairs, I'm surprised to see Tori holding London.
"Shoot, I forgot about today." He shakes his shoulders. "I'm so sorry."
"It's okay." Tor shrugs her shoulders as she passes London to Blake.
"How are you my baby girl?" He coos while kissing her rosy cheek.
"She still needs a bath and dinner," explains Tori.
"Okay, bath, I'm onto it." Blake nods his head.
"I guess I have dinner duties then?" I laugh.
"Sorry," he whispers.
Blake takes London upstairs while I glare at the kitchen. I don't mind cooking, in fact, I love it. I'm not great at it and I have no idea what to make.
"Are you staying?" I ask Tori.
"Well." She looks at the door. "I could do with someone to talk to."
While Tori takes a seat at the bench, I rummage through the fridge for ideas on something to make.
"Stir-fry with no meat," I mumble.
I grab armfuls of vegetables out of the fridge and place them on the bench. Tori stays perched on her stool as she sucks in a deep breath. As she exhales, Tori leans against the kitchen counter and begins her muddled story.
Tori begins her rant while I prep the veggies. Between nodding and agreeing, I throw the diced bits into the pan with a stick of butter and start cooking.
"So Jude and I have decided to go on a break until whenever we don't want to be on break," she explains.
"Do you want to be on break?" I ask.
"I love him but I also love Jude," she confesses. "It feels like my heart is being split into two."
I frown, unsure of what to say. Sometimes I understand Tori and where she's coming from, and then the other time, I'm trying to figure her out. I can't imagine what it's like to love two people, however, I can sympathise over loving someone you can't be, even if it's just a mother / son relationship.
"I'm sure things will work themselves out." I try to stay positive.
"Yes, I hope so." She nods.
Before I finish cooking dinner, Tori grabs the plates and cutlery from the cupboard to set the table. She even grabs London's high chair and places it at the end of the table.
I put the stir-fry into a bowl and add the serving utensils before sliding it across to Tori. I grab London's food, whack it in the microwave and wait for it to heat up.
"Blake, dinner is ready," I call out.
Tori and I take a seat at the table and start serving ourselves. He comes down with London freshly dressed in a dark pink onesie. Blake places her into the high chair and takes a seat beside her.
Blake tries to feed London but she knocks his spoon out of the way and tries to use her hand to grab the food. The mushy food spreads across her face but she doesn't seem to mind. Blake places the spoon down and she grabs it.
None of the food she tries to scoop onto the spoon make it to her mouth. Instead, it slops onto her bib and high chair.
"Don't worry, Blake, she'll be fine," says Tori.
Tori tosses a couple of carrot pieces onto the board and lets London take a shot at eating the hard food. Blake idly sits by the table watching as London chows down on the food.
After dinner, Blake takes London upstairs while Tori helps me clean up. She does the dishes while I clean the surface. There isn't too much to clean besides London's high chair which is completely messy.
When London is cleaned up, Tori and Blake put her to bed while I take a seat on the couch. I hear the pair tell London how much they love her, then Blake tries to shuffle Tori outside without too much conversation.
With a huff, he drops onto the couch and looks at me. His green eyes pierce into mine as he brain ticks over.
"I'm sorry about everything. I must have blanket about London."
"That's okay." I shrug.
"It's not, though." He shakes his head. "I didn't know we were starting solids or letting her use the spoon."
"Don't worry about it." I wrap my arm around his neck and tug him to my chest.
"Babies tell you when they are readying for something. They see us doing it and wanna do it too," I explain.
"I don't think the arrangement is working. What happens when she gets older?"
"What bought this one?" I frown.
"When you mentioned the house being unsuitable, I realised things like school will be hard. I don't want her to end up being the child who leaves her math book at her Mum's or something like that," he explains.
"You won't let that happen." I poke his chest. Instead of smiling, his frown disappears and he's left with a thoughtful expression.
"I'm thinking about going for full custody. Tori and I can share London until it's time for school, then she needs a stable environment."
While I want to agree with Blake, I feel bad for Tori. London is her child too and she's worked so hard to turn her life around and to be a good mother. She's also my friend and her life is already turned upside down with the issue surrounding her relationship with Jude. What else could she possibly lose before she falls off the edge again?
"Tori isn't going to be happy about this."
"I know, but my family comes first."
I smile and nod my head. Blake lays his head on my chest and we watch television until the flickering shadowed light turns into blurs of what could be my dreams.
* * *
My eyes spring open, only to find London tugging on Blake's arms. A soft snore escapes his lip so I shove my foot into his side. Blake wakes up and sees London standing in front of him.
"Did you have another bad dream?" he asks.
She nods her head and whimpers.
"It's okay." He smiles.
I get up and turn the light on. Blake tries to take her back to bed, but she screams. Confused, he looks at me and I smile.
"Big sleep over then?" he asks.
"Sounds fun," I agree.
We turn everything off and head upstairs. I change into my pj's while Blake wanders into the bathroom. London and I get into bed and snuggle under the covers. Lo shuffles over to my side and rests her head on my stomach. She passes out with her lips slightly parted and her fingers wrapped around the fabric of my shirt.
Blake walks back into the room and smiles at the sight of London. He quietly strips out of his pants and shirts then lifts the blanket to climb in. Blake reaches over and grabs my free hand and squeezes it.
"Goodnight," he whispers.
"I love you." I smile.
He falls asleep with a faint smile on his lips. I wiggle around, but manage to find a comfy position. If I dream a little, I can almost imagine what my life would have been like with all four of us snuggled up in bed.
