Chapter 5

It was another half and hour before Mason and Anthony came back out. During that time, Myst and I say there enjoying each other's company. Her small smile made me feel a lot more comfortable. When they did finally come back out, Mason had a huge smile on his face. He sat down across from us and Anthony sat down next to me. "Thanks Anthony," Mason said with a huge smile on his face.

Anthony nodded. We sat there for another five minutes before deciding to head to bed. "You can come in Bruno and I's tent," Anthony told Mason.

Mason nodded and we all headed to our tents. Gabriella came into our tent and fell asleep as soon as she laid down. We blew out the fire with water.

In the morning we packed up and started to walk again. Mason was in front of us and was narrating as we went past certain things. "To our left is Crazy Man Lake," he told us.

"Why is it called Crazy Man Lake?" Gabriella asked excitedly.

Mason stopped us and turned towards us. "Story time," he said smoothly.

Gabriella started jumping up and down, while Bruno and I tilted our heads in wonder.  "About 80 years ago, there used to be a man who would come camping on this mountain every summer. Every morning he would eat breakfast with his wife, get dressed and come down to this lake to come fishing and would leave at noon to eat. He would come back at one to start fishing again," Mason began, "He would bring his Italian bread because he claimed that it brought in the most fish. Now some people began to call him crazy. For when he ran out of bread, it's said that he would kill birds, deer, and even humans, to use as bait. One summer, him and his wife came camping as usual. Everyday he would eat and come fishing, as usual.  One day, though, his wife ended up missing. The police questioned him and some other campers. He claimed that he had went back to the cabin and she was gone. The other camper, on the other hand, had a different story. One of the campers said that he saw the man come back earlier than usual. He said about eleven o' clock. The camper then said that he heard the man and his wife yelling and banging on the walls. Then, all of a sudden, there was a scream and a gun shot heard.  Not to long after, the man came out with a large bucket of meat. It was his wife. he used her meat to go fishing. When the police came to arrest him, he started screaming and kicking. After the questioning, the man ran off to this mountain to grab his belongings so he could run off.  When he got to this lake, the police surrounded him. He looked at the lake he had loved and then back at the police. It was either get arrested, or die. So he took a deep breath, and ran into the water. He to to a part that was a little too deep for him and just about drowned. According to the police, a hungry crocodile came along and ate him. That was the last anyone had seen or heard from him."

When he finished, I felt sick to the stomach. It was the grossest thing I had ever heard. "That's disgusting," Gabriella said as if she had read my mind.

Mason chuckled. "You asked for it," he told her before starting to lead us up the mountain again.

We all walked in silence with the occasional comment from mason telling us about a tree or plant. After a while, Bruno broke the silence. "Hey Mason?" he said.

"Yes?" Mason replied looking back at him slightly.

Bruno sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "I'm sorry about last night. I was rude and I should have trusted you," Bruno admitted.

    "It's fine," Mason assured him.

"It's getting dark, we should settle down," Myst said looking up at the sky.

She was right. I could barely see Mason, who was only a few feet  ahead of us. So we settled down somewhere and got a fire started. I went with Bruno and Gabriella to get a deer or something. When we got back, Anthony, mason and Myst were sitting around the fire talking. Mason helped us to cut open the deer and cooked it.  No one said a thing while we ate. When we finished, everybody went to bed without a word. Soon we were all knocked out and ready for the next morning.
