Chapter 20
I gasped in horror as my mother slumped over, blood gushing from her temple. The window was broken from where the bullet had entered and there was still a pounding in my ears from the sound of the gun. Dad grabbed his phone and dialed 911. As he was on the phone, I grabbed some paper towels and put them against where mom was bleeding. Nico came rushing in, obviously concerned. When he saw what had happened, he ran out through the side door. I could hear him fighting with someone. Dad hung up an carried mom to the front. I followed close behind as I heard sirens rushing down the street. I opened the door for dad, who carried mom over to the paramedics while Nico dragged someone over to the cops. He talked to them for about five minutes before walking over to me. "Your going to have the house to yourself," he said, "Dad is going with mom to the hospital, and I have to go check out some evidence so we can find out what happened to Bruno. OK?"
I nodded and gave him a hug. He hugged me back and kissed me on the forehead. "I love you," I said, pulling away from our hug.
"I love you too princess," he replied before walking away.
I went back in the house, closing the door behind me and ran upstairs to my room. I closed the door and locked it before doing the same with all of my windows. I grabbed my phone and hid underneath my blankets on my bed. I stayed there for hours, only leaving twice to go to the bathroom.
It was around one in the afternoon when my dad got back. He knocked on my door softly. "I'm home" he said.
I got out of my bed and unlocked the door. When I opened it, he flashed me a sad smile. "How's mom? Is she OK?" I asked, my heart racing.
"Mom is in critical condition," he said, "For right now it seems like she's going to be OK, but they have to keep her there just in case something happens"
I nodded and sighed. I gave him a hug before sitting on my bed. He started to leave my room before stopping. "One ore thing," he said, turning around, "pack you bags. we're going to be spending some time at Nico's house until we can be sure it is safe to live here again"
I nodded and got out my suitcases from underneath my bed. I shoved all of my pajamas and every outfit that I own in one suitcase before packing some books, my makeup and everything else I need in the other one. When I was done, I brought everything into the hallway. "Dad! I'm done," I yelled down the hall.
"Just hold on a second!" he called back to me.
I laughed as he brought almost every suitcase that him and mom owned from their huge bedroom. "OK. I'm ready," he said as sweat dripped down his forehead.
"Need help there dad?" I asked as he struggled to bring everything down the stairs.
"Yes please," he replied.
I took my stuff and mom's makeup bag from him and brought it out to the car. Our car was older than dirt, but it ran smoothly wherever we went. We got in and headed over to Nico's. Nico had left a key in one of his plants so that way we could get in. We walked into the house and found our rooms easier than we thought we would.
My room was decorated the same way it was when I was 14. For about six years, I visited my brother over the summer without our parents around. I remembered thinking I was the coolest person in the entire world. I got to spend the entire summer without my parents.
I smiled at the memories before beginning to unpack everything. I put my pajamas in the bottom two drawers and shoved everything else either in the rest of the drawers or on the shelves. Once I was done, I laid down on the twin sized bed with my phone. I scrolled through Instagram and twitter to kill the time until Nico came home. "Are you guys here yet?" I heard him ask as he walked through the door.
"Yeah, we're here!" dad and I called at the same exact time.
I got off the bed and went downstairs. Nico was looking at something on his phone, not even noticing me. I smirked evilly before starting to slowly tiptoe towards him. When I got close enough, I attacked. "Boo!" I screamed, jumping on his back.
He almost fell over in fear. I laughed as I jumped off his back and ran. I ran back to my room and hid in my closet. I heard him run down the hall and into my room. He shuffled around, clearly unable to find me. Then, I heard him gasp. I held my breath as the room went completely silent. Where'd he go? I thought to myself after ten minutes of complete and utter silence. Then my closet door flew open and there stood Nico smirking. "Did you really think you could hide in there forever?" he asked.
"Maybe," I replied, shrugging.
He rolled his eyes and left. I curled up in my bed and fell asleep. I slept peacefully in my bed until morning.
When I woke up, I smelt pancakes and bacon. I smiled and went down stairs. I sat in the kitchen and watched Nico as he made our breakfast. "Good morning princess," he said, his voice hoarse.
"Good morning," I replied, still a little sleepy.
I yawned and rested my head on the table. After about five minutes he finally spoke. "Can you go tell dad that breakfast is almost done?" he asked.
I slid of my seat and went to my dad's room "Breakfast is almost ready," I said before leaving back to the kitchen.
Dad walked in as Nico started to serve our plates. "Thank you," I said as he slid two huge blueberry pancakes on to my plate.
We ate breakfast in a peaceful, but extremely tense silence. After we finished, Nico left for work, leaving dad and I with ourselves. "Want to watch a few movies?" he asked, motioning towards the TV.
I nodded and went to get us some snacks and drinks. When I got back, he was putting in a D.V.D. We sat on the couch and watched movies all day until we fell asleep.
