Chapter 12
We set off just after the sun came up the next morning. Mason and Bruno talked nonstop with Bruno blushing with every word Mason seemed to say. Gabriella didn't say a words to any of us while I talked with Zeke, Myst and Anthony. Mason was in the middle of a sentence when, suddenly, he stopped. "What's wrong ba... Mason?" Bruno asked, his face turning red.
I raised an eyebrow as he looked at me quickly. He shook his head and turned back to Mason. Mason started to look around. "This isn't good," he said, his breath getting heavy.
We all were still confused as he lookd around franticly. "This really isn't good," he said, clenching his fists.
"What's wrong?" Bruno asked again, taking Mason's hand.
Mason looked at him with fear written all over his face. He shook his head as his breath got heavier. "My meds! I must've dropped them on our way up here," he said worriedly.
"Meds? What meds? What do you need them for?" Bruno asked, obviously upset, "What haven't you been telling me?"
Mason took a step back as an angry Bruno took a step back. "Well, I may or may not be recovering from depression," Mason replied with a nervous smile.
"You have depression?" I asked, tilting my head.
"I used to have depression. I am getting better though. They let me have this week away so I could come out here. This place makes me really happy, despite all of the drama," he told us, "They told me just to take my meds every day to help make sure I don't start spiraling back down that path"
Bruno and I sighed. Why didn't he tell us this before?, I thought to myself before Anthony started speaking. "Wait," he said, sounding confused as hell, "How did you even realize that your meds were gone?"
He had a good point. We all looked at Mason, waiting for him to answer. "I went to go reach for them in the side pocket of my bag and they weren't there. I usually keep them in a safe place where I can reach for them, just in case I have to take them while I'm walking. So, I went to my other side pocket to see if they were there. No luck there either. I checked everywhere and I couldn't find them. The only meds that I have left are for my allergies and I took those already. ," he explained, his face red in embarrassment.
I thought over what he had said, and I realized that I had seen him going through his bag before we stopped. "We can look around for them to see if they feel out somewhere nearby," Myst suggested with a small smile.
Mason walks down into some part of the woods to look for them while the rest of us look around on the path and in the woods on either side to us. We all grouped back together with very little luck. We started walking up again with Mason on the phone with his therapist. "You know what I just realized?" Bruno said, looking back at Anthony, Myst, Gabriella and I, "Joanne's mom said that she would text us and she hasn't yet"
He was right. My mom didn't even ask if we found something to eat or made sure we weren't eaten by bears. "Your right," Anthony said, "Don't you think you should text your mom Joanne?"
I nodded and took out my phone. Hey mom, I said, Are you OK?
I quickly sent it before putting my phone back into my pocket. We kept walking behind Mason who was on the phone for another twenty minutes before hanging up. He sighed as he put his phone in his pocket. "Are you OK?" I asked .
"Yea," he replied, nodding, "They are going to send my pills up to the main lodge. So I'll have to pick up my stuff from there"
Bruno took his hand and squeezed it. My phone buzzed against my leg, tickling me a little bit. I took it out, excepting a text from my mom, to see that I got one from my dad instead. Honey, he said, your mother is in the hospital, She got into a car accident yesterday morning.
I gasped and stopped in my tracks. "What's wrong?" Myst asked, looking up at me with big eyes.
"My mom," I said, "She got into a car accident"
"Is she going to be OK?" Bruno asked, "When did it happen?"
I took a deep breath and tried not to cry. "It happened yesterday morning. I really hope she's going be OK. but you can never be sure with these types of things," I said, the tears threatening to spill.
"I'm sure she's going to be fine," Anthony said taking my hand.
I leaned into his large frame as we kept on walking up the mountain. When it started to get dark, we set up our stuff and started the fire. Nine if us talked after the events that took place. I couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen next or who we would find.
We would find out soon enough.
