Goodbye
Morning. Silently the young couple gathered their belongings for the trip back to Spring Valley. Both felt sad to leave. With a last sigh, Brian latched and locked the cabin door. Then, he climbed behind the wheel of his Spider.
"There's a general store in the village about two miles down. Why don't we grab a couple of sandwiches and sodas?" he suggested, pulling out of the dooryard. "We can picnic on the way home."
"Sure," Taff dejectedly responded. Wistfully, she glanced back at the cabin.
Brian ordered ham and cheese sandwiches, bags of chips, and bottled soda at the deli counter. Taffy wandered amongst the aisles of novelties and souvenirs. Pensively, she purchased matching tee shirts with the mountain vista printed and a set of silver spoons for her collection. It remained difficult for her to end their honeymoon at the lakeside cabin. However, she clung to her memory.
"You two staying up at that mountain cabin?" the old proprietor asked, watching Brian and Taffy head toward the door. Following affirming nods, the fellow continued: "I have a bit of mail for you." Rummaging through a stack of letters, he finally found a long business envelope.
Questioningly, Brian and Taffy exchanged a glance. Who sent them mail?
"It's from Uncle Mortie," Brian exclaimed, ripping open the envelope. "Taffy! It's the deed to the cabin! It's ours!"
"Dear Sweet Uncle Mortie!" Taffy cried, fling her arms around Brian's neck. "He's my favorite uncle!"
"Congratulations, you two!" The proprietor announced. "Mortie said you were just married when he dropped that off."
Cheerfully waving goodbye, the newly married Sinclairs headed toward their Spider and turned it back up the mountain. Neither questioned their next move. Goodbye Spring Valley and the norm. Brian and Taffy considered themselves mountain folk.
