The end.
The whole ride back home was torture for both women. Not only they couldn't talk to each other but they couldn't even look at each other. Jessica reached for Susan's hand slowly and held her but Susan didn't move a muscle. She just stood there, watching outside the window.
"Thank you, goodnight," Susan said to the driver once they reached Jessica's building and disappeared inside.
"Goodnight," Jessica added and followed her inside.
"Now, will you wait?!" Jessica whispered angrily before walking into the elevator where Susan was already in.
"I'm waiting alright"
"Jesus" Jessica whispered to herself.
The doors opened and both women walked out, heading to Jessica's apartment. She unlocked the door and threw her bag on the couch.
"All I wanted that night was to be with someone who would just tell me over and over again that I still got this. That I still matter. That people are still following me, that I'm not forgotten"
"And you wanted Sarah to be that person?"
"Well, could you do that?"
Susan thought about it for a moment and caught herself feeling angry, "No"
Jessica started searching inside her pockets, looking for her cigarettes, "I knew it and that's because I wouldn't be able to do that for you as well because I hate it when you doubt yourself, or your worth" She stopped and took a sit on the couch next to her bag, "Because I love you," she said and took out her cigarettes, she finally took a puff and blew the smoke to the side, closing her eyes, relaxing, "God, I love you"
Susan lowered her head and smiled, "Did she," she cleared her throat, "You know, she helped you?"
"She did. Even if she lied to me, at least, I heard what I wanted to hear and I felt nice for a minute. I felt like I still got this"
"Stop this, you do got this. You've always did and always will"
"I'm done after this, Susan"
"Are you sure about this?"
"Well, unless someone's writing me the character of my dreams, but I doubt it"
"So I'll have to find a second job, huh?" Susan said and approached her lover who chuckled and made more space on the couch.
"You would do that?"
"I could work as a waitress"
"I think we're gonna be just fine"
"For what it's worth, I watched the play"
Jessica jumbed around, "You did?"
Susan laughed at her lover's enthusiasm, "You think I would've come all the way to Broadway just to pick you up? Nuh, I was there. I watched the play"
"And?"
"Honestly?"
"Always"
"How the fuck do you manage to do all that and be with me every night? You're incredible"
"You really believe this?"
"Are you crazy? When you found out about your son, I cried my eyes out and God, dancing and smoking on stage? Not to mention the ass-touching thing, you're phenomenal"
Jessica started laughing, "Ass touching thing"
"Jess, I know you won't miss it that much but the theater is gonna miss you"
"Everything comes to an end, Sue"
"I know," Susan looked at her, "And I'm sorry"
Jessica stopped her by lifting her finger on top of Susan's lips, "Don't. It's over"
With that, Susan smiled, "How about you go take a shower and I make us something to eat, what do you say?"
"What are we having?"
"Shake shack?"
Jessica started laughing, "Sounds perfect"
Susan reached for Jessica's hand and grabbed her, "I know how you feel"
"I know you do"
"And there's nothing wrong with that. I just want to be a part of this, don't forget this"
"God," Jessica said and leaned forward, resting her forehead on Susan's, "What did I do to deserve you?"
"Remember how we used to fight in the beginning?"
Jessica laughed, "Crazy"
"I don't like fighting with you"
"There's no reason to"
"Come on, Jess. I'm starving" Susan said and moved back, she watched Jessica smiling as she finally stood up, "Hurry, okay?"
"You wanna come?"
With that Susan rolled her eyes, "God," she started and quickly smiled, "Of course, I do" she said and stood up following her woman inside.
