Mother - A protector

Ragini was 5 years old when her Maa- baba left her for forever. Her father's best friend took her into his home with him, where she met him, Laksh, her first crush and her first love. Laksh's parents loves her like their own daughter. She found a mother in, Sujata and a father in Ram. And Laksh, He was her everything. Her best friend, her confidant, her knight in shining Armor, her secret crush and her first love.

Both were inseparable, they were like shadow to each other. They grew up together and fall for each other hard. He stole her first kiss when she turned 18. After completing their graduation, he finally proposed her for the marriage. Both were ecstatic to tell this good news to their parents. That night, Ragini surrendered her everything to him. They made love whole night and slept in each other's embrace with a content smile. They were happy in their own world, until someone came to crash their happy paradise.

The day they were about to tell about them to his parents, His mother's sister, Arpita came with a girl name Kavya. She was beautiful in her own way. She was her best friend's daughter and she wanted her to marry Laksh. She talked about this to Sujata and she agreed immediately with her sister. Kavya made a place in Ramta's heart with her good behavior and her character. Raglak were lost in their own world that they didn't notice what's all happening around them.

One day, Laksh came home with a bright smile on her face. He informed everyone that he got the job in Mumbai city. and he had to join it after a week. Everyone was happy but there is a worry on Ragini's face.

" Don't be sad. I will talk about us to Mom and Dad, tonight. " she nodded, looking at the ground and he make her look up and pecked on her lips.

She gave him a small smile but something was still bothering her. He tried to talk to Ramta but one way or other, Arpita was always there along with Kavya, so he never got the time to tell them. It was 2 day before his joining when Sujata called him. They were sitting on the bed, Kavya was blushing and Arpita was giving her teasing smile. He looked at them confused and asked his mom about the matter. Sujata told him about Kavya and his marriage.

He was shocked listening all this. Sujata didn't stop praising Kavya in front of him and he couldn't able to say a word.

" So you agree naa? " Sujata asked with full smile.

" Mom, I need to- "

" I know you have to go for the job, but we can put engagement tomorrow and then will decide the date of the wedding when you will be free. " she cut him in the middle.

" Mom, I love-"

" Ragini" he turned towards the door as soon as he listened her mother calling her name.

" Come here, Beta. And congratulate your idiot best friend and my future DIL " she said with cheerful voice and Ragini tried to smile but all she was feeling is pain inside her heart.

" Mom, Ragini and I- "

Before he could complete his sentence Ragini interrupted him.

" Congratulation Laksh and Kavya " she said and left the room immediately.

Tears were rolling down from her eyes as she ran towards the terrace. Behind her was Laksh calling her name repeatedly. He held her hand before she reached the last step.

" I will tell mom everything. Everything about us. I can't marry anyone, except you, Ragini. " He back hugged her and she sobbed in his arms.

" Mom and Dad, did so much for me, Laksh. Didn't you see how happy mom was when she talked about your wedding. How will I be able to see that smile faded " she asked painfully.

" I am sure Mom will be happy about us. She loves you like her own daughter. I know she will accept yo-"

" I am pregnant, Laksh..!! "

His hold loosen around her as she uttered those words.

" Now tell me, Laksh. Will she accept me now? What will she think of me ? That I am some cheap girl who - "

He placed his palm on her mouth before she completed her sentence. He placed his other palm on her belly and smile.He bend on his knee to came face to face with her belly.

" I am going to be-"

" Lakshh...." Arpita's loud voice made him startled making him loose his balance.

" Lakshhhhhhhhhhh"

Ragini shouted with wide eyes to see her rolling down from the stairs and falling on the floor. Everybody rushed in the house towards him and Ragini stood in her place numb. He whole world turned upside-down to see him lying on the floor covering in blood.

They took him to the hospital immediately and doctor admitted him in I.C.U. They waited outside the ICU when Arpita barked.

" It's all happened, because of this girl " she shouted pointing at Ragini.

" What are you saying, Jiji?" Sujata asked confused.

" She pushed him from the stairs. " She accused her but Ragini was sitting there numb without listening anything. Her life was battling with his life in the room and she can't do anything other than to wait.

Sujata nodded her head in no. " Naa Jiji, Ragini can't do such things. Laksh is her best friend. She loves him more than us " Ram agreed with her and Arpita looked at Ragini furiously.

" So, you are saying, I am lying. Don't go on her innocent face, Sujju. She is a cunning bit**. A characterless girl " Arpita blamed and Ram looked at her furiously.

" Enough Jiji. I am not going to listen one more word about Ragini, from your mouth. Look at her condition, How much she is affected due to this accident " Ram came towards her and caresses her hair. She looked at him blankly.

" Then why, don't you ask your innocent Ragini, that whose dirt she is carrying in her womb " Arpita spat disgustedly and Ramta looked at her shocked.

" She is preg..Pregnant ? " Sujata whispered shocked.

" Yes Sujju, I heard from my ears. She was pleading to Laksh to accept her dirt as his. And when he denied telling that he is going to marry Kavya, She pushed him from the stairs. " Arpita made up the story. Kavya shook her head in no, telling her to don't lie, But Arpita gave her a glare and she shut her mouth.

" Ragu, You are pregnant ? " Sujata asked sitting in front of Ragini and she bend her head not able to meet her eyes.

" Whose child is this ? " she asked with calm tone but this calmness was the silence before storm.

" I asked whose child is this, Ragini ? " she asked angrily as he temper overcome her every emotion.

" Lak..."

" Don't you dare to take my Son's name from your filthy mouth" she spat vehemently and Ragini shuddered.

" You did all this. you made my child in this condition,for not accepting your dirt...!!! I loved you as my daughter but what you did, I will never forgive you for that " she said with gritted teeth. Ragini looked at her blankly. She looked towards the ICU waiting for him to come and tell his mother, That he is the father.

The doors open and doctor came out with a sad face. ragini rushed towards him.

" He is ok. But due to severe blood loos, he went into Coma.And  We don't know when will he wake up? "

ragini collapsed on the floor listening him. Her stomach pained and she cried holding her stomach. Ram rushed towards her and made her lay one of the stretcher. Doctor took her to the other room.

Doctor declared that mother and child are both fine, It's just happened due to stress, nothing else.

They took Laksh back to home with a nurse suggested by the doctor. When Ragini was about to enter, Arpita held her hand and throw her outside the house.

She landed on the ground but put a protective arm around her belly to prevent her or him from hurting.

" You are not going to live in this house anymore. Go to the one whose dirt you are carrying. " Arpita said furiously and Ragini held her tears in her eyes.

" It is Laksh's child, Mom. Believe me..!! " she pleaded looking at Sujata.

" Haah..!! When you see that he isn't there to tell how much a b*t** you are, You are blaming our son to made you pregnant. Huh..!!" Arpita was giving her a disgusted look and then looked at Sujata. "  Don't know where she wandered to make her face black, Sujju. We shouldn't put this characterless girl in our home "

Sujata looked at Ragini and she looked at her pleadingly. She remembered how small she was when she came in her home, how much she adore her. But all those emotions converted into anger when he remembered what happened to her son.

" She can stay here. But she is not allowed to talk to anyone of us. Especially to my son " Sujata said without emotion and left from there.

Ragini looked at Ram pleading and he patt on her head sympathically and headed inside. Arpita smirked looking at her and Kavya passed her a sad smile.

Two months passed like this. No one, talking to Ragini. She wasn't allowed to go outside. she just had to stay in her room or to roam on the terrace. She tried to see Laksh several time but Arpita stopped   her always. She barked insults at her every chance she got.

Arpita tried many times to make her fall or to kill her child, but she always had her protective arm around her belly. Her morning sickness made her loose more weight. Her eyes were sleep deprived as she kept looking at the close door of Laksh's room always.

One day she listened Arpita talking about her abortion to Sujata. Sujata declined immediately But she kept telling her that if this news come out and she kept lying about Laksh being the father, then what will happen to their family's prestige. Sujata too think about it, But her heart wasn't giving her permission to take away an unborn life.

But one day without anyone's notice, Arpita made her kidnapped by some goons. They injected her and she lost her consciousness. Arpita bought her to the hospital to do her abortion secretly by bribing the doctor.

But before they can start the operation, she was wide awake and listened Arpita talking to the doctor. She felt horrified thinking that they were planning to take away her child. She ran outside without anyone's notice. Arpita saw her at the last moment and tell the goons to follow her. She kept running, holding her belly, looking behind her time to time. Three man were chasing her with full speed.

She stumbled on a stone and her hand came around her stomach to protect her belly. Her other palm scratched from the ground making it to bleed. She looked behind her to see them nearly approaching her.

She took a deep breath and stood up, and ran with her full strength. She was sweating badly, crying vigorously, running in dishevelled manner. Her eyes were dropping because of the exhaustion but she kept running and running.

Finally she found a highway after crossing a deserted forest, she rushed for help, but nobody was stopping their vehicle to help her. She was loosing her strength, but she forced herself to walk for her child's sake.

She looked behind her and took a deep breath to see no one following her now. She cried as her feet wasn't supporting her for walking. She put her full strength as she dragged her body to the faded building showing with her blurred vision.

"H...Help"

She collapsed unconscious as she landed on the steps of the red and blue building.

Ramta were looking at the door worried. They don't know what's the truth, but they loved Ragini as their own child. They cared for her from the day Ram took her with him in their home and they still care for her. It's been a day she didn't return at home.

Ram's phone ringed and his eyes widened  to listen to the other side. They rushed towards the hospital. Sujata hugged her immediately as soon as she saw her laying on the hospital bed with pale face. Doctor informed them, that a family admitted her here. And both mother and child are safe, but weak due to her condition. Ramta thanked the family for helping her.

They made her discharged and took her home. Ragini was still in trauma because of what happened with her. She just kept looking at the wall blankly. If someone talked to her she just answer the question and kept looking at the wall blankly again.

"What happened, Ragu?  Where were you from last two days? "

Ram sat beside her caressing her head. She just stared at him without saying anything. Sujata left the room with moist eyes. Arpita burned to see her back in the home. Kavya looked at her with pity.

At night, when everybody was sleeping, Arpita entered in her room, to try to hurt her again. She grabbed a pillow and about to pressed on her mouth, when Kavya entered along with Ramta.

She tried to justify her action, saying she is a taint to their family but Sujata slapped her glaring at her with furious eyes.

"How could you do this Jiji? Kavya told us everything What happened that day. How can you do this to my child? "Sujata scowled angrily looking at her elder sister.

Ragini who woke up by their noises looked at them blankly. Sujata took Ragini, in her embrace immediately." I am ashamed to call you my sister "Sujata turned her head before giving her a hateful look.

Arpita was about to say something, when she spoke again," And think twice before trying to hurt her again. Just like she protected her child, Her mother is standing in front of you protecting her as a shield " Sujata gave her sister a vehement look and she rushed outside the room.

Kavya gave them an apologetic look and left from there. Ragini finally cried, placing her head in her chest and Ram took both of them in his embrace.

Ragini was sitting beside Laksh, talking to her continuously. This is her daily routine from last 7 months. Ramta was looking at them from the window smiling sadly. There's no improvement in Laksh's condition from so many months.

Ragini was smiling telling about how she keep annoy his parents for her irregular demand because of her cravings. Suddenly she stopped laughing and frowned, her eyes widen as she felt wet beneath her.

"Aaaahhhhh"

She cried in pain clutching her belly from one hand and squeezing Laksh's hand from other hand. Ramta rushed inside immediately.

"Aaaaahhhh....!!! Maa...!! Laksh...!!! "

She was screaming as Ramta took her out of the room hurriedly. No one notice the little movement in Laksh's hand when they took Ragini away from him, releasing  his hand from her hold.

Ramta was pacing outside the operation theatre. Doctor came out of the operation theatre and asked.

" Are you her parents?? "

Ram nodded without thinking twice.

" We should talk. "

They headed into his cabin and he gestured them to sit.

" I told her the first time, she came here for checkup 8th month before, that it is risky for her life to carry this child, but she said she wants to take this risk. But now, we can save only one person, so we need to get her family's sign, to whom we should save? "

" MOTHER? "

or

" The Child? "

Ramta looked at the doctor shocked. Sujata sobbed in Ram's embrace as they took the decision together.

" You know Princess, when your little hand touched me first time, my body react immediately. I was waiting for the reason to move my hands and when I took you in my embrace, it felt like nothing can be better day to woke up from that deep slumber " Laksh told her 14 year's old girl, Angel, how he woke up from his coma state just by her mere touch.

" I know dad, you told me this story several time. " she rolled her eyes dramatically." I want to know about your Love story, how did you fall in love with her.

She looked at the wall where, Ragini's 18th birthday pic was placed. Laksh too looked at the picture and smiled.

He then told her about how they meet, how they fall in love and how her mother protect her from hurting from people's evil eyes.

Angel looked at the pic in which Ragini was laughing and Laksh was sticking his tongue out to her.

" I am missing her, dad"

"Mee too" Laksh said and gestured her to hug him. She came in his embrace and placed her head on his chest.

"Will she come? " she asked hopefully.

" Why don't you ask her only? "Laksh said teasingly pointing behind her and she jumped looking at her standing at the door.

" Mommmmm....!!! You are back...!!! I missed you so soo much" Angel took Ragini in a bear hug squealing loudly and she chuckled.

" I missed you too, Angel" Ragini kissed her forehead and she gave her a toothy smile.

" Huh..!! Nobody loves me..!! "Laksh looked at them with pout and both the girl winked teasingly and jumped upon him tackling him on the bed.

" We love you sooooooo much "

" Aahhhh... Mom..!! Save me from these wild cats" Laksh screaming horrified and Sujata laughed looking at her family happy like before, with their new treasure "Angel".

They were laughing fighting with pillow, hitting each other and Laksh in the process. Laksh hold Ragini's wrist and dragged her to his chest.

"You should tell me dad, that you need privacy. No need to show actions in front of me "Angel said teasingly and left the room.

Ragini hid her face in his chest embarrassed and he chuckled ruffling her hair.

" How was your campaign? " he asked.

She joined a NGO to help the poor and orphan children. She went for a campaign for a week, to organise events about charities in their NGO, for their better future and better education.

" It was good, Infact great. The campaign was successful, we got connected with so many social workers who are working for the same cause. "

He smiled as she kept telling her about her campaign.

" I don't know how will I survive if you left me that day" he said suddenly and tighten his hold around her waist.

"I am not going anywhere, Laksh..!! Those were hard day for us. Stop thinking about them again and again. "

" I love you so much, Ragini "

" I love you too, Laksh. "

She said as she herself remembered those days. How Ramta choose her to save that day and how she argued with doctor about it. They need to listen the Mother first, so they asked Ramta to convinced her. They tried their best but she wasn't listening anyone. She wanted her child to see the world, whether she will be present or not. Ramta agreed to her wish with broken heart.

But God, gave them their Angel, in the form of blessing who brought her mother back to protect from this world again.

" But, Mom loves me more, dad " Angel peeped from the door and they laughed.

They gestured her to joined their hug and she ran towards their embrace squealing happily.
