Chapter Five: dreaming of Will
There was nothing around her, but the swirling grey smoke and the echo of her dead husband's voice.
The first time she had had this dreams she had called out to Will begging him to come forth until he emerged from the smoke and laid his hands on hers. She had been petrified of the lost voices, of the missing part of her within them; that they were all just faded memories and that, she couldn't bear.
The voices welcomed her now, the calming whispers of his words and quotations of her favourite books whirled around her. The voices told his stories, read his poems and sang his songs aloud to her, even the ones she thought she had forgotten. She would happily spend the rest of time in her dreams of Will, be with him forever and never have to suffer loss again, but then she remembered Jace and realised such a thing would be unthinkable.
At last he emerged from the silent storm, his face youthful, much unlike like the one he had worn on his deathbed, but the one she had first fallen for. His blue eyes were bright and soft as he gazed on her and his hair, as always, was tousled as if he didn't even realise he wore it. There was colour in his cheeks and a smile playing on his lips.
When he reached her he took her in his arms and embraced her, kissing her forehead lightly. It was comforting to be this close to him, to let him hold her once again.
Tessa beamed at him and ran her fingers across his cheek. "How have you been?" she asked, not letting go of him as she did, not ever wanting to let go.
"I have been well Tess, and yourself?" he asked.
"Jace has been keeping me busy, as always." He laughed at this and kissed her lips gently, lingering for a moment and pulling away.
"It takes energy for me to enter your dreams," he said. "But not as much as it would take me to fully form as a ghost. I have little connecting me to earth, little more than my desire for your company. And what is a desire to the dead when we at last have peace?"
"You will be able to fully form one day, though? Please tell me you can," she pleaded.
"I can," he said. "I promise you I can. I will not rest, nor will I truly be at peace until I have been with you one last time, and not in this bazaar dream form." He took her hands and held them between their bodies. His hands were warm, she remembered, as they always were. Will choose to appear in this, younger state because he knew she wanted him to. She longed to see him as a young man again, enjoying the peace and happiness after the episode with Mortmain. To see him once he finally realised he could live a life full of love and happiness.
"Did you even know it was possible until you wished for it?" Tessa asked. Will shook his head.
"I had no knowing. It was Jessamine who suggested the idea, that I could be with you temporarily in this dream state if I wished," he explained. "I wish it were easier, Tess, but I am only loosely bound, you are part of the reason, and I'm sure you know the other part."
"Jem," she said almost too suddenly, but he smiled affectionately at her.
"I long for my parabatai again, all my life I longed for just one last fight," he said.
"Do you think it might be possible," she started, "that when you were able to fully form, that fight would be yours?" she asked.
"I think it so," he said. And then he began to fade.
The world around her crumbled open to Jace lying on her stomach, his head buried in the crook of her neck. She was sprawled across the sofa, her head hald dangling over the side and one of her legs bent over the other. The two of them were surrounded by a pool of morning light and cool air as someone had opened the windows whilst they were asleep. Tessa didn't see Magnus or Ragnor in the room, so assumed they must have gone to bed after she had fallen asleep.
Tessa rolled the boy onto the sofa and went to their room to get dressed; she wanted to carry him to bed, but feared she might wake him.
She recalled the events of the evening before, Jace clutching the knife after killing that demon, her little boy, a hunter so young. The thought almost brought tears to her eyes; she couldn't bear for him to grow up. She remembered now, after years of pushing it away that one day he would age and die, and she would be left alone again. She missed them all so greatly: her husband, her children. It had become easy to think about them all, easier than it had been, but she had not so long ago suffered Stephen's death, and the thought that Jace may also die young...
Knowing the thought of it would crush her, she pushed it away. Jocelyn and her young daughter would be arriving later that day; she would dress herself before waking Jace then help him ready himself for their arrival; he may be a good fighter, but chances are if she left it to hi, Jace would end up trying to squeeze his leg through his trouser leg.
It was only when the shower water ran over her that she realised that she was caped in ichor.
And it was only as she brushed her hair that she realised it was clotted with black demon blood; she could only imagine, if she was so messy, what it would be like to clean it off Jace who had single headedly killed the demon.
Jace was still asleep when she returned to the living room, but Magnus was there also, combing his hair in a silver plaited mirror that hadn't been there the day before.
"Morning Tessa," he called to her as she sat beside Jace and shook him awake. He gave a little baby yawn. "Say good morning to uncle Magnus," he said to Jace who didn't respond, and instead looked at Magnus as if he were crazy, well, she supposed he kind of was.
"Where's Ragnor?" she asked, though not really caring if he had stayed or left, she thought it polite to at least pretend to take an interest.
"He's gone out on some kind of assignment he tells me," Magnus answered without looking away from his reflexion. She rolled her eyes at him. "TESSA!" he yelled and she giggled a little. She got to her feet with Jace in her arms and began to stride towards the bedroom.
"Jocelyn and Clary will be arriving just after lunch," he said suddenly as she closed the door between the two of them, in order to dress her Jace.
