Mother Dearest

SMASH! Edward bolts up out of his make shift bed on the floor. They had just moved in and hadn't put together their beds yet. Fear spreads through Edwards chest, was that the sound of glass breaking that he just heard? It couldn't be, the news said that Hurricane Jennifer was going to be a category one. Mom said that's practically harmless. Wait, what if someone is breaking in? Edward decides that he needs to check on his siblings and mother.

Edward grabs a metal bat from one of the open boxes in his room. He runs into the hallway poorly lit by stupid battery-operated candles. Edward wishes his mother would have gotten the power turned on before they moved in. While making his way down the hall Edward hears whimpering. It sounds like it's coming from his sister, Marnie's room. Edward breaks in to a sprint and throws his sister's door open, he holds the bat up high, ready to swing.

"What the hell are you doing?" Marnie holds their youngest sister against her. Edward lowers the bat.

"I heard glass break and then I heard whimpering? Are you guys okay?" Edwards asks, his heart beating viciously in his chest. "Why is Emma in your room?"

"We're okay, Emma came in earlier in the night. She thinks she saw something watching her from the corner of the room, probably just a bad dream. She was crying just now because of the glass breaking." Marnie says shrugging. Why does he have the feeling that Emma wasn't having a bad dream?

SMASH! Edward looks at his sisters, trying not to let his fear show. Emma starts to cry again, her dark hair shimmering in the moonlight.

Marnie isn't fazed. "The winds are strong, maybe a branch went through a window downstairs. This house is surrounded by trees; I wouldn't be surprised if it was ."

Marnie stands, standing up Emma with her. "Let's all check it out. Don't be afraid Emma, if something happens we'll protect you." Marnie smiles down at Emma and takes her hand.

Edward leads them back out to the hallway. They round the corner slowly, which brings them to the top of the stairs. One by one they creep down the stairway. They are at the bottom when Marnie whispers.

"Do you hear that?" Edward does, he hears a woman laughing. The laughing doesn't sound like their mother, so who is it? Edward doesn't want to go any further, something feels wrong, dangerous even.

Marnie pushes Edward forward. "C'mon, we have to see if Mother is okay." Edward wanted to tell her that he didn't think that was their mother but he was afraid to say that out loud. He creeps closer to the archway leading into their new living room. The laughing becomes louder, more sinister.

Stepping into the living room Edward sees their mother bent over picking up broken glass, but her body is convulsing with laughter. By this point Edward's two sisters are behind him at the middle of the archway. They watch their mother raise her arm with a piece of glass in her hand, blood flows down her arm and she catches it with a long, snake-like tongue.

"Mother?" Edward steps forward an inch. What happens next chills Marnie and Emma to the bone.

Slowly Mother turns her head, the children hear every bone in her neck crack as she turns her head all the way around. Mother continues laughing while she turns the rest of her body towards them. Her eyes are pitch black and her skin ghostly white. Mother smiles and her teeth are like a shark's. Emma wets herself and whimpers.

Edward raises the bat and takes a defensive stance. "Mother, what's-"

Before Edward even realizes Mother is moving she's already tearing through his neck with her razor-sharp teeth. Emma screams and bolts out of the room. Marnie just stands there in shock staring at the horrific sight before her. Her mother chewing on Edward's lifeless body. Smiling at Marnie after each bite, with pieces of Edward stuck in her teeth.

Marnie's mother looks at her sideways. "I'd say he was about 17, aged like a fine wine. So delicious!" The voice that comes out of her mother is low-pitch and ragged. It sends chills up Marnie's spine.

"What are you?" Marnie spits at the creature in front of her, recognizing that it is no longer her mother. The creature just chuckles and munches on one of Edward's eyes. Marnie gags.

Marnie then notices that Edward's bat is close to her, if she moves undetected she could grab it. Slowly inching to the side pausing when the creature smiles at her, Marnie makes her way to the bat.

Marnie is right next to the bat when an infant's scream rings out. Marnie's eyes widen. Oh no! Their baby brother Ben is in mother's room.

Mother jerks her head up and smiles once again. "Mmm, I hear dessert."

Marnie leaps for the bat, grabs it and swings it with all her strength at Mother's head. Then Marnie sprints upstairs to her baby brother.

Marnie rips Ben from the crib, throws on his carrier and places him inside. Ben looks up and giggles at the ceiling. Marnie looks up also to see what he's laughing at and screams. Mother is on all fours attached to the ceiling. She hisses at them, her shark teeth seemingly glowing in the dark room..

Marnie rushes out of the room as baby Ben giggles at their mom who's crawling on the ceiling and wall, chasing after them. Marnie runs as fast as she can, there are a ton of rooms in this place.

Marnie glances behind her and doesn't see mother so she chooses a room at random to hide in. A wave of panic washes over Marnie. This house is huge and there's a storm raging outside. How was she going to find Emma and how were they going to get out safely in this weather? And what happened to Mother?

"Emma? Marnie? Where are you? It's Mommy, I'm all better now. Please come out." Mother? No, her voice still sounds off. It isn't her. Marnie prays that Emma stays where she is and that Ben stays quiet.

Marnie searches around the room for anything that might be of use. She finds an old roll of duct tape, a fire poker, and a dirty doll. She pockets the duct tape in her robe, gives Ben the doll to keep him entertained and keeps the fire poker in her hand. Marnie sits in the closet of the room and cries silently. Thunder crashes outside.

What happened to her mother? Her fun, big hearted beautiful mother. She was a monster now. Mother had never even hit them before and now she was trying to eat them. Marnie comes to the conclusion that whatever is going on, it's because of this house. It must be. The house is basically a mansion and her mother bought it for the price of a two bedroom house. Marnie had a bad feeling when they were unpacking that day but she chose to ignore it and be happy about the house.

Mother was elated, they had never seen her so happy since their dad was alive. One day she just decided that she couldn't live in our old house anymore, too much of it reminded her of Dad.

Marnie had learned about demons and possession once while watching a documentary. She thought it was just a hoax and people were stupid to fall for it, but Mother is showing all of the signs. Could Mother be possessed? There was no way to get a priest now and Marnie couldn't remember how the show said to do an exorcism. She did remember one thing, when the exorcism didn't work, the host for the demon had to be killed.

More tears fall out of Marnie's eyes as she realizes she might have to kill her mother. She's only fifteen, how could she even stomach killing her own mother.

Mother calls again. "Emma, it's Mommy I promise. I need to know if you're okay.

"Mommy?" Marnie hears Emma say in the distance. No! Don't fall for it, but Marnie hears footsteps and a door opening. She has to help Emma. Marnie puts down Ben and he starts whining. Hating herself for it, Marnie takes out the tape and puts a piece over Ben's mouth. He tries to get it off but he can't. Marnie kisses his forehead and leaves.

Creeping out of the room she sees Emma turn the corner. Marnie closes the door and runs after her. By the time she turns the corner Emma is already in Mother's arms, hugging her? Mother smirks at her over Emma's shoulder.

"Emma! It's not Mother, get away from her!" Emma tries to pull away, but Mother grips her tightly.

"Let her go! She's just a kid!" Marnie cries out.

"That's the reason I won't let her go, I love kids." Mother cackles at Marnie. Then Mother holds up a hand with giant claws protruding from her fingers.

"Stop!" Marnie wails. "Please don't!"

Mother winks at Marnie and embeds her claws in Emma's spine, instantly paralyzingly her. She keeps digging and when she pulls her hand out she takes out Emma's spine with it.

Marnie throws up and sobs. Why? Emma was just a little kid, she was a good kid too. Edward was too. Fury takes over Marnie and she lunges at Mother with the fire poker. Mother throws her against the wall, nearly knocking Marnie unconscious.

Mother crawls over to Marnie and licks her cheek, she turns her head. Mother snatches it back.

"I like to eat my main course nice and slow." Drool drips from her grinning mouth. She digs her claws into Marnie's cheek, Marnie bites her lip, trying not to scream.

How was Marnie going to survive this? Mother was too fast for her; she'd have to be distracted enough so she wouldn't notice Marnie.

An idea comes to Marnie, it wouldn't be pleasant though. She would have to wait until Mother was eating her. A tear falls down Marnie's face. Mother bares her teeth and bites into Marnie's arm. Marnie's scream fills the empty house.

The poker is right by Marnie's free hand, she slowly scoots it over. She gets a nice grip on the poker and prays to whoever is listening, to live and save her baby brother. Marnie slams the poker into Mother's skull, her body instantly goes limp.

Marnie gets up and stabs her mother over and over. Blood splatters her face, her clothes and even gets in her mouth. She shrieks with every blow, cursing this creature for destroying her family.

When her mother is no longer recognizable Marnie stops. The sun is rising outside and the storm seems to be over. Marnie takes the fire poker with her when she gets Ben, just in case. Ben is asleep in the closet. First Marnie rips the dress off of the doll and tapes her arm with it. Then she gently removes the tape from Ben's face and scoops him up.

Outside Marnie goes to the family car. She buckles Ben into his car seat and hops into the front seat. The keys are in the glovebox. Thank goodness her dad taught her how to drive before he passed. Even though she's underage Marnie is not taking a chance of walking through the woods.

Marnie whips the car out of the driveway and down the road. She's broken inside, she killed her mother and now she has a baby to worry about. Her life is never going to be the same again, but at least she survived.
