The campfire song

Anine's POV
Percy claps his hands, causing everyone to jump. He’s the only one that doesn’t seem too overwhelmed by the fact that he has a new sister, and that it means there are not only one, but two new children of the big three that have entered camp on the same day. He’s just grinning his face off with his arm slung over Maddy’s shoulders and Annabeth’s hand clamped in his spare one.
“It’s dinner!” he announces. He looks at me. “I am sure Chiron will let you sit with one of your friends, seeing as this is your first day, and you don’t know anyone.” I nod. “Thanks.”
The thing is, I am really shy when it comes to new people, but I am a pain for the people who know me. So the fact that Percy now says that I can sit with my friends, means a lot to me.
We walk back to the dining pavilion, where most of the campers are already waiting for us. Chiron sees us and smiles. He pounds his hooves against the stone floor. “Attention campers! Today, we have four new demigods joining us.” The campers all break into hushed whispers. It’s not normal that four campers arrive at the same time.
“One of them has been claimed already-” Chiron begins, but Percy cuts him off.
“Actually Chiron, three of them have been claimed.” Chiron looks at him in confusion.
“And why Percy, did you not tell me about this?” Percy looks like he’s walked into a trap.
“Um, because they wanted a look around camp and-” Now it’s Chiron's turn to cut off Percy. “Okay, Percy. That’s fine. Now everyone,” he turns towards the other campers, “We have been blessed today by Val, daughter of Apollo, Amelia, daughter of....” He looks at Percy. “Um, yeah, Hades.” A wave of whispers explodes in the audience. Chiron sends Percy a look that says We’ll talk about this later. He continues. “Maddy, daughter of....” Once again he looks at Percy, but this time Percy speaks loud and clear. “Poseidon.” Another wave of whispers. Chiron stomps his hooves again to silence the campers, shooting Percy another meaningful look. “And last, Annie, who has yet to be claimed, I assume?”
“Correct,” Percy replies.
I just stand there awkwardly, watching as my friends find their tables and sit down with their new siblings. “Chiron?” He looks down at me. He’s a lot taller than how I had envisioned him. “Can I go sit with Maddy and Percy?” I ask.  “Sure, child. Go have fun.” He smiles, and I wander off.
I head over to the Poseidon table and sit down next to Maddy. Across from us sits Percy. Maddy and Percy stop chatting and turn to smile at me.
“Hey Annie! How’s it goin’?” Maddy asks.
“Not great... I just wish my godly parent would claim me already. It’s been a great day but I feel a bit left out.”
“Don’t worry,” Percy reassures me, “I’m sure you’ll be claimed by the campfire tonight. Why don’t you order some food?”
“Just think about what food you want, and it’ll appear,” Maddy adds.
I glance over and see that she’s eating a crepe and Percy is devouring a slice of pizza, which is blue, of course.
Hm... lasagna sounds really good right now. I think to myself.
Suddenly a plate of steaming, cheesy, delicious smelling lasagna appears before me.
“Yum!” I exclaim.
“That looks great!” Maddy grins.
“It would be much better if it was blue,” Percy jokes, Maddy just shakes her head and rolls her eyes at him with a smile.
“Mmph,” I mumble as I stuff my mouth.
Percy laughs and then we eat in comfortable silence, enjoying each other’s company and the amazing food. Happy chatter and laughter ripples throughout the dining pavilion, delicious scents waft through the air, and for the first time since I arrived here, I feel like I truly belong.
Chiron stomps his hooves, signifying the end of dinner. “Everybody! To the campfire!” he yells, and everyone storms off, including Percy, Maddy, and I. We find our seats, while the Apollo kids tune their guitars and start playing a lively tune. I immediately recognize the song. I lean over towards my friends. “Guys! This is the campfire song!” We cheer and clap as we listen to the campers sing about their lives and their godly parents, the flames casting a warm glow throughout the entire amphitheater.
( maddy_ria_fanfics wrote all of these verses for us!)
“Maddy! Your turn!” Percy nudges her, and Maddy pales. “Um, okay...” She stands up nervously, takes a deep breath, and starts singing with the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
“My dad’s Poseidon, god of the sea. He’s pretty powerful, one of the big three,” She falters for a second before continuing, “But when it comes to my life, he was never there for me. Oh no...” Everyone else shout-sings “OH NOOO!” as Maddy smiles and then continues, “I’ve been through some rough times, my family isn’t great, but now I’ve got Percy, the best twist of fate!” Percy smiles at her and whispers something in her ear as she sits down, making her laugh. Somebody in the crowd shouts, “Next!”
Amelia raises her hand. “Oh, oh, meee!” She clears her throat. “I’m a child of Hades,” she looks at Nico while singing this, and he smiles at her, “god of the dead. He’s kinda creepy, full of underworld-y dread.” She too stumbles over her words here. “I’ve been bullied, made fun of, don’t have lots of friends, oh no...” Again, everyone shouts “OH NOOO!” This seems to give Amelia more confidence. “But now I’m at camp, with people just like me! I’ll make some good memories, forget my history.” She smiles, turns to Val and whispers: “Your turn.”
“Uhm, okay...” Val thinks for a moment before singing, “My dad is Apollo, god of the sun. You’d think he’s a jerk...” I hear someone whisper: “He is with those ridiculous haiku poems he keeps leaving for us,” and I laugh slightly, but Val looks at me in confusion. I stop laughing and nod at her to continue. “But he’s actually kinda fun. He can get annoying, his ego weighs a ton. Oh no...” For the third time this evening we all shout “OH NOOO!” Val laughs while she continues singing, “I’m actually not surprised, it makes a lot of sense. But dude,” she sort of shouts these words, “gimme a break, why you gotta be so tense?” She nudges my arm. “C’mon, your turn!”
Dam. I guess I’ll just have to work around the fact that I don’t know who my godly parent is yet. I start very softly, “So, my mom is a goddess-” “C’mon Annie, sing louder! We can barely hear you!” Leo shouts from his spot over by Calypso. I clear my throat and try again. “My mom is a goddess, I guess that’s fine. I just wish that she would give me a sign.” Everyone goes completely silent in anticipation. The Apollo kids stop playing their guitars as the flames turn golden, the colour signifying excitement. A grey light is flickering around me. I look up, and above my head there is a flash of light and a silvery owl materializes out of thin air, swooping over the crowd before vanishing in a cloud of silver sparkles. The campers erupt into cheers. I can’t believe it. For the second time today, I faint.
