Annabeth's vision

Anine's POV
I stumble my way to the Athena cabin, my feet barely able to support my body. I’m exhausted. Fainting twice in one day has taken its toll on my body. Stepping through the doorway of Cabin 6, I can feel everyone’s eyes watching me, but I just make my way over to Annabeth. The blonde is sitting cross-legged on the bottom of her bunk bed, typing away on a silver laptop. She glances up, and shoots me a smile.

“Hey, Annie! Oh, wow, you look exhausted.”

“Yeah,” I admit. “Is there a spare bed?”

“Mhm, you can take the top one of my bunk,” she offers.

“Thanks,” I murmur, climbing up the ladder and curling up on the mattress. I could use some sleep.
“Alright campers, lights out.”
I sigh in relief. Thank the gods for Annabeth. She knows I need the rest.

A few people groan, but they all shut their books or close their laptops. They wouldn’t dare defy their head counselor. The lights flicker out, and the room is filled with the soft sounds of the others’ breathing. I’m just about to drift off when I hear a tapping noise.
“Wha- hm- what?” I mumble, sitting up and rubbing my eyes. “Who is it?”

When I’ve wiped away the blurriness fogging my vision, I see a head of curly blonde hair peeping up at me from the ladder… Annabeth.

“Hey, Annie, it’s me. Look, I know you want to sleep, but we need to talk. C’mere.” Yawning, I climb down the ladder and follow Annabeth out of the dark cabin, leaving our sleeping siblings behind.

“Where are you taking me?” She doesn’t answer. Instead, she grabs my hand and leads me away from the cabin more quickly.
Annabeth doesn’t stop until we reach the amphitheater. The seats are now empty, but the coals of the campfire still glow softly in the darkness.

“What is it?” I try asking her again, but I recoil at the stare she’s giving me. It frightens me, to be honest. The light from the coals is reflected in her eyes, giving them a red glint. She looks… dangerous.

“I’ve had a vision.”

“What…what did you see?” I ask nervously, not really sure if I want to know the answer.

“You.” she whispers, still staring me down as if she thinks I know exactly what she is talking about, but I’m still lost.

“Just me? What was I doing?”
“No. Not just you. You and Val and Amelia and Maddy.”

I stare at her pointedly, my eyes asking for the next part of the story.

“You were… there was… I still don’t know what it means!” She tugs at her hair in frustration, the golden curl springing back into place. “I saw you and your three friends. You were standing here. Where we are right now.” I glance around. We’re standing behind the campfire, staring up into the empty amphitheater, white marble glowing in a ghostly way in the pale moonlight. I shiver.
“What else?”

“There were...voices.”
“Voices?”

“Those of my friends, other campers, our siblings… all shouting.” Her voice shakes.
“Shouting? Annabeth, what were they saying?”

“Traitors.” Her voice cracks, and her eyes bore into me. I don’t dare to breathe. She opens her mouth to say something else, hesitates, and then clamps her mouth shut, looking at me expectantly.

“Annabeth, I would never-“
“I know.” She cuts me off. “I knew you’d say that. And I want to trust you, I do. The gods have a way of messing with demigods’ minds. It’s an annoying habit of theirs. But I don’t know what this vision means, Annie. It’s dangerous.”
“Annabeth?” She cocks her head at me.

“Yeah?”
“I’m scared.”
“Me too, Annie.”
who-who
“What-“ the silver owl we saw earlier when Athena claimed me swoops down and lands in the dying remains of the campfire before us. As its talons clench around the red embers, they turn golden, emitting a soft glow over our faces. Then a woman’s voice surrounds us, echoing off the stony seats of the empty amphitheater:

Trust one another, but don’t put your trust in the wrong hands. It is the only way to save the camp. You and your friends are in mortal danger. The gods cannot help you this time…
“Mom?” Annabeth whispers, staring at the owl, but it just disappears in a cloud of smoke.
“Well… that was…”

“Cryptic.” She finished for me. “Not enough information. I can’t believe the gods are putting me through this again! You think saving the world twice would be enough. And you- you just got here! Now they’re roping you into this mess too.”

“Hey, Beth, it’s okay. At least we know we can trust each other. That’s a relief. A small one, but it’s something.”

“You… you’re right.” She pulls me into a fierce hug. “Let’s get some sleep, okay? We can discuss this in the morning. But for now… don’t mention any of this to anyone, alright? Even your friends. You and I should try to figure it out a bit first. Remember what Athena said… we have to be careful who we trust.”

“You’re right,” I nod, “Now let’s go get some rest.”
