The Call is Coming From Inside the Mountain (Part 2)
-Requested by ssleepyraee -
After a cursory search of the mountain, with nothing novel found, the league gathered the team again.
"I swear, there's something weird going on here!" Wally insisted.
"We don't think you're lying," J'onn assured them, "but it's possible that you misidentified the cause of your phenomenon."
"Is it possible that Wolf was just spooked my the storm?" Flash asked.
"Canary! You said yourself that there was something magical about this!" Dick argued, "don't you guys think it's worth investigating?"
"It is, but we aren't going to get anywhere tonight," Batman explained, "and we've running behind as is."
"He's right, if there really was some presence haunting you, it's clearly gone now," Canary said, "and once we get the power back on we can put up the bio locks, then we'll be able to ensure no one unauthorized enters"
"When will that be?"
"Probably some time tomorrow."
"What are me and Conner supposed to do?" M'gann asked. Sure she and their roommate didn't get cold nearly as easily as their human teammates, but it was still dark and drafty, and the doors were unlocked; how were they expected to rest?
"You can stay in my apartment," J'onn began, "but there isn't much room."
"I'm not leaving Wolf," Conner said.
"I'm not leaving Conner," M'gann added, for though the allure of her uncle's rickety but homey apartment weighed on her mind, she couldn't leave her best friend alone.
"Then I guess that's that." Canary said. "I'll keep my phone on tonight in case you need me, and Tornado should be back sometime tomorrow."
Conner and M'gann exchanged glances, and hesitantly agreed. They didn't exactly feel safe staying there, but what other option was there? They could always sleep in school.
"If that's all, Robin and I must get going," Batman announced.
"Me and KF should hit the road too," Flash agreed.
Arrow gestured for Artemis to follow him, "C'mon kid, it's a school night."
Kaldur turned to his mentor. "May I stay with Ms. Martian and Superboy?"
"If you wish."
"Thank you, sir." Kaldur turned back to his friends, "Come to Ms. Martian's room, we have much to discuss."
Conner blinked blearily as M'gann shook him awake.
"Superboy? Superboy! Aqualad?"
Conner cast his exhausted eyes over the atrium. Kaldur was sitting across from him on the floor, looking as confused and tired as Conner felt.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"I don't know! The last thing I remember was going back to my room, the league were still leaving, and Aqualad wanted to talk about... uh..." M'gann frowned, turning to Kaldur. "What was it we were going to talk about."
Kaldur rubbed his brow, trying to ignore the ache between his eyes. "I... do not remember. It is as if that line of thought never existed, but it leaves a vacancy."
"Anybody getting Deja vu?" Conner grumbled, he reached over to wake Wolf from his slumber. Suddenly, as he leaned to sit up, Conner noticed he'd been lying on a binder, and several pieces of lined paper were scattered across the floor around them.
"What's that?" M'gann asked as he lifted a page.
"It just says 'remember'."
"This one," Kaldur grabbed the page nearest him, "It's one of my drawings,... it appears to depict..." Kaldur tilted his head with a frown, trying to figure out what he was looking at. The pencil was scribbled and smudged, as if done hastily, and if you forced Kaldur to describe the few comprehensible parts of the drawing, he'd describe it as two very round circles, each with a slit through it, then a rough, scribbled outline, and what appeared to a testicle at the back. Whatever it was also seemed to be wearing some sort of crown, and have four crooked legs.
"The flashlight's gone out." M'gann said, and suddenly the three teens became aware of just how dark, and just how quiet the mountain was.
"We should contact Canary."
"How? the power's still out!"
"This feels... very familiar," Kaldur remarked. "If we got our way out of it before, than maybe we can again."
Wolf nuzzled his snoot into Conner's arm, then perked up. A deep groan grew in his throat.
"What is it, boy?"
Wolf got up, pacing cautiously towards one of the hallways. In a few seconds his hackles raised, and the beast began to growl again.
"What's out there..." Conner stood hesitantly, eyes on the dark corridor beyond.
M'gann continued to gather papers from the floor, frowning at the illegible words and hasty drawings. "What was happening? This is my handwriting, and it's all written on top of each other! and this one, it's just random letters: DFMM QIPOF..."
"Maybe it's a cipher," Kaldur said. "What are some common surface codes?"
Conner, who'd still been staring uncertainly into the hallway, took a second to process the question."Doesn't sound like a dial pad or pig pen... it's probably a remapped alphabet."
"Well what does it say?"
"Let me see that."
Wolf continued to guard the door, jowls raised just enough to bare his fangs.
"How do we tell which configuration of the alphabet it's mapped on?" M'gann asked.
"It was hastily done, and it seems like it was meant to be found," Kaldur remarked, "it's likelly something simple."
Conner's eyes flickered over the letters, murmuring: "E-G-N-N-- no. C-E-L-L-- that's it!" He sprung upright, startling his friends.
"What does it say?"
"C-E-L-L P-H-O-N-E!" Conner exclaimed. "Cell phone!"
"Of course!"
"We never did find them!"
"Neither did we find the comms!" Kaldur gasped.
"Wait, there's something on the back." Conner's lips moved silently as his eyes dragged over each character, translating the words one letter at a time.
"What does it say?"
"It just says 'check laundry machine'," the clone reported.
"Why would it say that?"
"Only one way to find out." Conner stood, calling Wolf to his side. "Team leader?"
Kaldur nodded. "Affirmative. You two investigate this lead, I will try to find our emergency flashlights."
Conner helped his lead leader up. "Try the generator room, I think Kid Flash and Ms. Martian left a--"
Kaldur opened his eyes.
Had that been a dream? For even though now he still felt Conner's grip on his palm, his eyes showed he was in one of the residential hallways. He fumbled to sit up, and found beside him a flashlight. He hit the switch and was pleasantly surprised when it turned on.
He shone the beam up and down the hallway. Kaldur's heart rate picked up, and the boy inhaled sharply, and raised a hand to rub his eyes.
Something black was smeared on his palm.
Kaldur blinked, raising the flashlight to read the smudged words on his hand: 'DO NOT PANIC. find them'.
